As noted by Bournemoz on the general board (link), the "Let Me Kiss You" sleeve is now on the HMV site.

  • The sleeves of all of the Quarry singles have been terribly poor compared with the fantastic artwork of all of Moz's other singles. Even Southpaw I think has great single sleeves. Also on this pic, Moz looks like a business man boss or something. Infact, thinking about it, the whole morrisseymusic.com website looks like a company with Moz as the boss in his boss suit.
I dont like this boss attitude he is taking these days.

We've seen these shots already and thats what made my heart sink, why didn't he sit for a New Shoot?
I have every single he's ever released and a few weeks ago I got really high and I lined them up in chronological order just to see...and like many of you here, decided the ones from Quarry are my least favourite.
This one would have worked a whole lot better for 'Don't Make Fun of Daddy's Voice' if he had decided to realease that as an A-side.

  • But then I like the new "cheesy" covers. They are cheesy but they are "Moz" cheesy if you get what I mean.

He is having a bit of a laugh with all the old cheesy elvis comeback crooner imagery. It goes well with the music which has a lot of knowing winks to that sort of thing as well.

He's decided "tasteful" is old hat and a bit too safe. Good on him, the last thing he wants is to do tasteful black and white pictures that just repeat what he's done before.

This is his best cover so far for this album. I like it better than the album cover for YATQ.

  • A bit better than IBEH and FOTGTD - but it does look rather tacky nevertheless, or maybe 'gaudy' is the better word. It's probably the campest sleeve yet, with none of his erstwhile sophistication. I disagree with the person who says it's a good idea for Moz to abandon the "tasteful" black and white pics of old. He may be "having a laugh" but the laugh's on him, because this is the kind of sleeve one might associate with Tom Jones, Elton John, or, as someone said, Liberace. Is this the image he really wants to cultivate? I can only assume he must be having a laugh, cos I can't believe that the guy who designed the cover of 'The Queen Is Dead' can't see the difference. It's not like he lost this ability in his solo career - even the Southpaw and Maladjusted singles have far superior artwork. It has to be said, this bunch of artwork is the worst he's ever done as on overall entity, from the utterly awful album cover to the garish IBEH cover to the cheap FOTGTD cover. If it's an in-joke, well, great for him, but at the end of the day it looks tacky. I think this new sleeve could be worse, but then again, it could be a hell of a lot better. In fact, it's rather like an OK Magazine Dale Winton publicity shot. Bring back the stills from films/Linder's photography - those are the sleeves that will last into the future. Also, as someone noted, his previous tendency to use cover stars and poses of himself (much more tasteful than this - i.e. 'Your Arsenal' album cover) meant that the cover had as much meaning as the song - like the utterly wondrous Viv Nicholson shot on the front of 'Heaven Knows.....', one of his best ever and utterly encapsulating everything that needed to be said in one photograph. But if he is going to use his own pic, at least get the colours right, as with the 'Vauxhall and I' sleeve or 'The More You Ignore Me', both of which are aesthetically pleasing. I hope he abandons this obsession with cheesy artwork very soon indeed.

  • Because, as has been pointed out, he has been playing with the "comeback" imagery (i.e.- the big MORRISSEY lights at concerts, the cheesy "classy" album covers, and even the collaboration with Nancy Sinatra seem to make this obvious). Morrissey has always had an obsession with popstardom, but is he taking it too far?

Is this the beginning of the end?

Karma equals minus infinity, but I stand up for the truth
  • At least it's better than the awful Paint Shop Pro'd First Of The Gang To Die cover but I still think it's not as memorable as the earlier sleeves like Suedehead, the Vauxhall period, or even Roy's Keen. It does look a bit too "posed" and not very spontaneous. Indeed, from certain angles he looks as though he's posing for a clothing catalogue. Similarly with the YATQ sleeve, I thought that photo of him should've been put on Attack press releases rather than the actual LP.

I wonder if Jo Slee is still involved with the sleeves as I really enjoyed her Peepholism book. Actually whatever happened to her, she used to be his PA didn't she? Was she frozen out too? Or simply 'retired' but still friends with Mozzer?

it is apparent to me that the artwork is no longer controlled by morrissey.
you only have to flick through vinyl collection and peepholism to see the intricate planning morrissey had in each single/album produced from cover star to style of sleeve to messages on disk matrix etc .
ok i admit that we are no longer buying vinyl and the cover of a cd is never going to match that but surely better photos at least could be produced.

  • The portrait of him dressed in the grey pinstrip suit with the pink tie has got be Morrissey at his most stylish in recent years. Grey really is his colour, it compliments the skin tones of his complexion, light blue eyes, and the hue of his hair. He doesn't wear enough of it as far as I'm concerned.

One of my favourite photos in recent years is one where he wearing grey woolen trousers under steely grey pullover with black shoes and he's stepping off a coffee table. Superb.

If you think he looks bad in a grey suit then remember those hideous tailored blazers he's been wearing recently including the primary red one he wore on Jonathan Ross - absolutely gross!

I think he should study the grey pinstripe suit and pink tie picture with great intensity and appreciate that my views on style and colour co-ordination are absolutely correct.

THEN he should make every attempt possible to hire me as his stylist!

  • For all those who say it's Morrissey purposely being cheesy - not true. After all the input/say/control he has had on all past covers (inc. and especially Smiths covers), he is not now about to just release any old crap in the name of cheesiness. He is not that sort of person, and simply would not be so dismissive of something as 'big' as a cover.

I think he's just continuing to move away from covers of old and obviously rather likes the current favoured theme of him, not looking nearly as flattering as he has done live this tour, with a plain backdrop.

I do agree it's boring particularly compared to his old covers (The boy with a thorn in his side cover was particularly inspired!!) but it doesn't seem he'll ever go down that route again. Even his earlier solo stuff - the photos of himself were brilliant, and beautiful.

Another live photograph would have been nice - he's looked soooo fit on tour lately!!!

  • I don't think it's a flattering photograph, however I think it's good that he decided to go down the tailored suit/stylish older gentleman path that Bryan Ferry and Bowie have as they've aged. It would be a bit silly for him to go with the gauze and lamé that he wore when he was younger. I don't like the backdrop on this sleeve, I think they could have got a better shot of his face, but I doooo like the suit.

"First of the gang" was his worst single sleeve since "Hold On" - not that I care. It's just that you'd have thought someone with morrissey's taste would find a better line between tongue in cheek kitsch and tacky vulgarity. I think this one takes it just a little further towards the latter.
