posted by davidt on Monday September 06 2004, @08:00AM

An anonymous person sends the info from MorrisseyTour.com:

Here’s the update as of September 4, 2004:

Dispelling some rumours:

- He hasn’t been fired from the band.

- He hasn’t quit the band.

- He’s not addicted to cocaine.

What’s going on:

- He’s been unwell.

- His condition is a private matter.

- He is recovering like a champ.

- He will be rejoining the band.

Reliable rumours I can’t confirm:

- Alain was going to rejoin the tour for the current leg, but decided to take more time to recover.

- The tour is not ending in America. More dates will be added, Alain will re-join for them.

Of course this is very good news indeed - though i hope it will not debar Morrissey from collaborating with others - AS WELL as Alain and Boz - on his next record. I do believe some new ideas are required musically. But splendid news nevertheless. Hope Alain recovers fully very soon.

What was reported in that post is not news. Everyone who has been following this story knows those things. We know Alain was not sacked because Morrissey would not dedicate "Candle" to Alain in concert had there been a fall out. Also, there was never any evidence of drug addiction. For those of us that have been following that info. gave us nothing, and for those who have not been following, that info. gave them very little.

I have spoken to people who know Alain personally.

Apparently Alain is taking prescription drugs for depression, has had suicidal thoughts, and was never quite the same after his car accident. He tried to hang himself with his belt in the hotel room in Dublin and this...suggested that he was a troubled man in need of help. People don't like to talk about this, often not even acknowledging it. The reason that nobody knows exactly when he will be back is that this is a matter of the psyche.

It's reprehensible for Sanctuary to tell us nothing at all. To those that argue that this is a "private" matter and that Alain will let us know when he wants to, I would say that when someone you care about is ill, you want to know what is going on with them. You want some shred of info. on the person's condition and their progress, if any. This does not constitute a violation of privacy. What Sanctuary is doing is cruel & sick to we/us fans who just want to know something of Alain...who don't want to wonder & worry about him every day.

Also, Alain is connected to a highly public figure, Morrissey. We're not talking just of Citizen Smith ailing in his living room in Inverness.

It's really sad that it has come to this. A brief statement, months ago, would have been in everyone's best interest and could have prevented the rumours that have followed since.

            Godspeed Alain.

The Harsh Truth of the Hand-Recorder (Score:1)
Alain has been sighted by Jimi Butch, one of the best Morrissey's special agents - a former bouncer at the Heaven - in a West London pub, sinking pints of the cheapest lager with a couple of strange fellows who spoke with a thick northern accent. He was spyed all the evening by the sharp undercover investigator.

The first was a middle-adged dark-haired geezer who looks like the groacer next door. He was constantly beating the table in rythm like a pacemaker. Alain called him Mike, probably a short for Michael. The second, a fair_haired in his early forties, said he couldn't play music anymore since he recently sold his bass guitar on Ebay so he could afford a new wig to look like a singing plumber named Liam. Alain called him Annie although "Annie" was obviously straight (something Jimi could easily tell given his former job).

The three of them had a long conversation about a former pal of them "Maurice C.(?)", and mentioned repeatedly the lack of loyalty he showed them. The recording was pretty bad because of the background noise in the pub at Happy Hour but it was soon obvious that the trio was ready to plan a serie of legal actions in order to Get Maurice C to prove his loyalty. At the end of the conersation, they all pledged "To Our Loyalties !"

It is heartwarming to witness scenes including good people in a pub craving so much for loyalty in a world ruled by money and greed, thought Jimi while returning to write his report for Morrissey, the reouted paranoid reclusive singer. He was so honestly happy to have spent a whole evening in a pub surrounded by those simple and kind men that he earnestly told Morrissey : You must trust the guy you ask me to follow (Alain). You sould've seen him with his pals. From what I've heard, you know, Loyalty is his only luxury, he knows you will last.

Let me first say that whatever Alain's illness is, I wish him the best and hope he has a speedier recovery.

That being said, we all know that there hasn't been much said about him. This will naturally cause speculation. I didn't agree with the rumor that Moz was booting him, but you have to expect that kind of nonsense when the record label, and Moz were being tight-lipped about the situation. It is obvious now that the first update was not enough. Anyone who knows anything about celebrity P.R. will figure that no matter how minor a celebrity is, (as in, he has close ties to a major act), there are going to be people who wonder what is going on. It would have helped Sanctuary and Alain Whyte if an update would have been given every few weeks or so, even if there was nothing new to tell. This would have been a better alternative to what they have forced themselves to do now, by posting an update in defense to speculation. It was bound to happen sooner or later. I sincerely hope the above rumor is not true, but if it is, then it would make sense why it seemed as though everyone was trying to put Alain off of their minds (the exception of course, being Moz's tribute).

Either Sanctuary are rookies to the celebrity game, or it was so bad that they did not know how to handle it. Unfortunately, the second you decide to participate on a reality show, television program, or onstage, you give up your rights to complete privacy. While there is a certain degree of privacy a celebrity has a right to, it is too much to ask of the public to leave them completely alone to the point where they can't ask, wonder, or speculate what is going on after a hiatus such as this. The man left in the middle of Morrissey's most important tour to date. The least Sanctuary could have done was to not keep the fans waiting. If they couldn't tell us what the exact situation was, then Morrissey could have mentioned his name at least once at every show throughout the tour.

While I don't know what may have been personally said between him and Alain, the fact still remains: Whoever made the decision to ignore it for this amount of time, put the pressure on to give this official statement. The fans aren't going to forget. It is unfair to call them selfish, they are going to ask and wonder about him, the least Sanctuary could have done was keep up the good word and the heat wouldn't have been this strong. I'm sorry that Alain has to put up with this at the time he must be going through, but the moment he picked up that guitar, is the moment when he lost complete anonymity.
