So begins Morrisseys first gig in the Athens of the North since 1995...was it worth the wait?
Abso-bloody-lutely.
He began with How Soon Is Now and the sell out crowd went berserk...the band sounded incredibly tight for this number and the sound was perfect.
The customary mention of Ms. Riley was greeted with a cacophony of boos and jeers as well as some, what I presume, were very unflattering comments...clearly people are beginning to tire of Morrisseys "obsession" with this spoiled rich kid!
Other highlights included "Rubber Ring" and "Shakepseares Sister"...but the stand-out moment had to be the opening triptych of HSIN, November and FOTGTD...sublime.
There can be no doubt that La Moz "performs" better in these smaller venues and those with tickets for Perth, Paisley and Bridlington are no doubt in for a real treat.

Have they never held a concert here before???
Still, all that was forgotten as soon as Morrissey took to the stage and launched into 'How Soon Is Now?'. The audience were going berserk, and this continued through 'FOTGTD' and 'November'.
An early highlight for me came with 'I Like You' which I think is a fantastic song and feel it should have been the next single.
The audience lapped up an impassioned 'Every Day Is Like Sunday', arms waving and voices belting out the words en masse(a definite 'hair on the back of the neck' moment).
'Shakespeares Sister' had everyone bouncing again, but 'Such A Little Thing' killed the momentum a bit. Does Morrissey and The Lads really think this is a better song over, say, 'You're Gonna Need Someone On Your Side', 'Shoplifters...' or 'Suedehead'? This song received the most muted response.
There then followed a batch of more slower songs that didn't evoke much response from the crowd, although I personally thought that 'I'm Not Sorry' was another highlight. His voice was so incredibly strong on this song. In fact his voice was remarkable all night, so clear and vivid, and he hit EVERY note. Makes you wonder about those weak TV appearances.
It was during this section that he sensed the crowd were getting a bit downbeat, which is a shame as where I was(front left between the amps and the pole) the audience were well up for it.
Before 'Munich...', he claimed the we might not like the sentiments of the song, but this was another surprising highlight. The song took on new life in it's live version.
'Rubber Ring' was great, but annoyingly slow. Think back to the live finale on Rank and you'll know what I mean.
'You Know I Couldn't Last' was the pinacle of the gig for me. His voice, especially on the 'blue eyes' lines was just majestic. Utterly fantastic. An extraordinary performance of an extraordinary song.
'Irish Blood...' and the now predictable encore of 'There Is A Light...' brought the show to a close. For the encore the whole band wore kilts(Boz wore his all show), Morrissey wore a black Jobriath tee-shirt, and Gary and Deano had their shirts off. New guy Jesse seemed completely at ease, and seemed to free up the playing somewhat. Lets hope he brings new blood to the songwriting.
This was a great concert, and if some of the crowd looked bored or weary then that's their hang-up.
Wonderful stuff Mozz, just capital.

He was clearly happy to be back in front of a home crowd, "We've been playing as a fringe act at a few festivals this Summer... thank God it's over.." he announced, before slaughtering "How Soon is Now"
First of the gang was received like the bona fide classic it has become, but the real highlight of tonight's show was "November Spawned a Monster." I've never heard it sound so good. As the band have developed their sound, they seem to have learned a few tricks. The days of rockabilly pop seem long gone; their ability to construct melodies and imbue their songs with a sense of space and light was demonstrated on "You are the Quarry" and they applied everything they've learnt to "November." It was odd, dramatic and quite heavy. Hopefully there'll be some sort of live version released sometime soon.
I was close to the front, so the slower songs were definitely welcome! It was remarkably hot in the venue, and practically every song was cheered and sung where I was standing. "Such a Little Thing" featured a new quirky interlude towards the middle with some funky bass from Gary and a strange guitar riff. It was pretty fantastic.
Lots of quotes. During the subway intro Morrissey sang, "I can't ever understand/ why my life has been cursed, poisoned and condemned....have you got an ideas?" he deadpanned in plainly spoken prose, a semi-smirk on his face. The most surprising moment of the evening by far was audible only perhaps to the front few rows. During "First of the Gang to Die" after the "hey hu hey" Morrissey pulled the microphone a few inches from his mouth, said "I love you Jesus" and crossed himself. Perhaps "I hHave Forgiven Jesus" is not ironic, after all.
The only song during which I drifted slightly was "I'm Not Sorry" but that's due to the brilliant set-list, rather than it being a particularly weak song. Again, "You Know I Couldn't Last" was magnificent, and tonight's crowd sung every word. It's obviously a very popular song with the concert-goers. What more can I say? Too many highlights to mention them all, including a stnuning "Daddy's Voice" and a deceptively sweet "Munich."
Another thing - banished are the quirky grunts and annoyingly dull vocal inflexions that ruined some of his songs on the 2002 tour (witness "Hairdresser on fire" on "The IMportance of being Morrissey"). IT was annoying to see some songs sung pitch-perfect, and others barely grunted and groaned through. Tonight though, each song was crooned/sung to absolute perfection. Some of the stuff sounded even better than it does on record. The sound problems of old also seem to have gone. The sound was very loud, as all gigs should be, and the guitars sounded excellent with some a good, powerful, loud rhythm section that really bolsters his live sound and complements his voice.
Mood-wise, he was obviously lapping up the adoration, and camping it up in front of his more understanding fans! During "Everyday" he first rubbed his nipple, then grabbed his pec (or whatever you call that thing in those of Morrissey's age and build) and said, "yeah!" He even licked his shirt, before hurling it into the sweaty moshpit. "My mum said you shouldn't talk to men in skirts... she doesn't know what she's missing" he said, before introducing the band, all kilted out for the occasion. Deano played the end of the show shirtless, and all I can say is he looks exactly like Beckham, only sexier.
I have to mention how fantastic the band were, Boz was great, Jesse's guitar sounded great, and Gary was coming forward and playing his bass up front with Morrissey at times, especially on his co-write, "You Know I Couldn't Last." The band really have got their sound absolutely sorted. Full marks.
All in all, a fantastic and quirky performanance.

His comment on Gazza "Has anything happened to him? Aside from birth?" was hilarious as were his constant references to "Falkirk: You Are The Quarry" and "Edinburrah"! The line about his mother telling him to "never trust men in skirts" then retorting "but she doesn't know what she's missing!" also had the crowd going mad. I was disappointed to not see Alain there and I hope he hasn't completely gone from the band but his stand-in did a superb job while the band rocked the evening away in kilts.

2 broken is literate and intelligent but has the attitude of a spoilt rich kid and his/her tongue firmly up Morrissey's arse.
3 broken arrived claiming to be a gay musician - what a great cover story
4 and this is the killer - broken suggested Moz add "How Soon Is Now" to the set on these boards some weeks ago and posted a sycophantic review of "You Know I Couldn't Last," as well as suggesting it should be played live... what happens? Moz returns from his break and plays both in his live set. Broken also suggested the last of the famous international playboys or girlfriend in a coma, if that happens we'll know for sure it's someone connected to Morrissey's inner circle.

Is Broken Julia Riley? Well, yes, possibly, but some people on here seem to know Broken and refer to the said individual as "he/him". So, unless Julia had a sex change recently.......
