Morrissey plays secret gig at Reading! (+ photo) - NME.com

MORRISSEY has played a secret gig in preparation for his MAIN STAGE slot later tonight (August 28) at the READING leg of the CARLING WEEKEND.

Dressed in a grey tweed suit and a blue New York Dolls T- shirt he performed three songs from new album ’You Are The Quarry’, kicking off with current single ‘First Of The Gang To Die’ followed by ‘The World Is Full Of Crashing Bores’. Ending with ‘I Like You’ he joked that “nobody pogoed, very disappointing”.

Morrissey plays on the Main Stage before The White Stripes tonight and rumours circulating the site suggest he’s planning “huge surprise” and fans should get there from the start. A source to Morrissey said he’d been rehearsing tracks he hadn’t played for 20 years.

  • These rumours are dreaful you know! I'm not even at Reading and the adrenaline is pumping. I guess Moz might pull a few older songs out the bag, like 'The Hand That Rocks The Cradle' or 'Still Ill'. God, that in itself would be good. But bugger me, if JOHNNY MARR appears with him for one song, do you think anyone would really want Johnny to leave? I think there'd be howls for the fans at Reading for more from him!! Interesting rumour about the Blackpool Empress Ballroom below though - but I'll treat it as exactly that till further notice. Man, I'm all wound up now and I'm not even there. Of course, it could just mean Alain's back or that they'll kick off with 'Jeane' or something else like that. Dying to hear more, if there is any more to tell!!

  • MORRISSEY stunned his fans at the READING leg of the CARLING WEEKEND tonight (August 27) by playing an ultra-rare version of the SMITHS classic ’HOW SOON IS NOW?’.

The star opened his set with the track, before going on to play a host of classics from his back catalogue as well as a chuck of songs from new album ’You Are The Quarry’.

The Mozfather’s set included The Smiths’ ’Shoplifters Of The World Unite’ and ’There Is A Light That Never Goes Out’, solo classics ’November Spawned A Monster’ and ’Everyday Is Like Sunday’ as well as recent hits ’Irish Blood, English Heart’ and ’First Of The Gang To Die’.

Morrissey reminisced about recording his recent album near Reading, and bemoaned getting a parking ticket in Caversham, before saying “Caversham, this next song’s not for you.”
