Morrissey and controversy, yet again.

The article:
'Bush should have died, not Reagan': Morrissey - ManchesterOnline

Excerpt:

"MANCHESTER music legend Morrissey sparked controversy when he announced Ronald Reagan's death live on stage during a concert - and then declared he wished it was George Bush who had died instead."

---
An anonymous person writes:

Morrissey's Reagan/Bush comment at the Dublin Castle show was picked up by the Drudge Report, an online newsite with a conservative bend. This is complete with picture and featured with references to some negative comments of Reagan. The Morrissey reference focuses on his comment that he wished it was Bush.

http://www.drudgereport.com/

The story is referenced from Manchester Online which makes brief mention...

One has to wonder whether this will get picked up by the major US media.

Oh cool! Nice to see Moz and Christopher Hitchens together there in Reagan bashing.

I don't see why we're supposed to worship Reagan.
Look how the media is going on, trying to canonize him. I'm no extremist. My generally libertarian (with a small "l") views find me very distant from most Moz fans on many issues.

But Reagan was a dope. He had alzheimers at least by his second term. I don't say that to be mean, I say that this is a FACT. And he was always giving his stupid grin and cracking his jokes, but it came off very wicked and heartless in light of what his administration was up to. As just one example, I recall how cold he was towards the AIDS epidemic. He also stomped all over the constitution, which should've been impeachable. Yes, I realize I sound like I call for the impeachment of every other prez. I supported impeaching Clinton...Reagan.... I don't see why impeachment should be so rare. If you catch a prez red-handed, the prez should be fired. Just a servant of the people after all. Supposedly, anyway. Wish people would view it that way.

I don't think people should have a great deal of respect for presidents, so Morrissey's words don't bother me at all.

Morrissey is over the hill, it's sad to see him at this stage in his life now. Morrissey has to resort to shock tactics and controversy, just like Janet Jackson and Madonna do when their new albums don't sell well.

Morrissey, the '80s are over with, the SMITHS broke up, and yes - the only way you'll ever make the headlines again is by running your mouth with hate talk.

According to the Dublin thread on the tour page, Morrissey did not say the words in quotes ("Bush should have died, not Reagan"), but said "Pity it wasn't Bush." Not much different, you say? But the point is, Morrissey's now been misquoted all over the media, further perpetuated by Drudge. And whatever he did say -- the only logical response can be "SO?". Sanctuary had to issue some sort of press release, but at least they were mature about it and didn't go into the whole "His views don't reflect Sanctuary's...wank wank wank".

Unrelated, but I always find it so amazing how in America all is forgiven when someone dies. The amount of praise being heaped on Reagan while ignoring the slaughters he wrought is disturbing. American media is so unbalanced it's practically upside-down.

Every American should be forced to live in another culture for at least one year of their lives. This would help eliminate the center-of-the-universe mindset that Morrissey so accurately pinpointed on his record.

To the guy masquerading under the various monickers of MozOverTheHill, Adolf Morrissey et al, you are a seriously sad individual. Were the various names attempts to confuse us? If so, they were crap, because Adolf Morrissey was using the same phrases as several other 'users' and so was revealed by anyone with an iota of intelligence as being the same person. If it was meant to be a wind up, why bother? How pathetic. But worst of all were the utterly abhorrent comments made about Auschwitz, which reveal the poster to be a true sicko.

Disagreeing with Moz's comments about Reagan is one thing: arguing that Moz is using shock tactics is at least a point of view: but saying stuff about Jews and Auschwitz is just sick. Moz using shock tactics? What about YOU? Besides which, why is everyone so surprised by his comments? Did he not wish death on Thatcher in the 80s (cf his Brighton Hotel comments). He is known for these kind of statements, but whereas before he was an unimpeachable godhead and the Smiths could do no wrong, now he is out of favour any comment he makes leads to him being hung out to dry. This is why I don't think shock tactics come in to it - he has ALWAYS made such statements throughout his career. Thatcher? Johnny Rogan to die in an M3 pile up (or even a hotel fire)? "One dead butcher isn't such a great loss"? Hello people, there is precedent for this - take it as part and parcel of his career.
