Morrissey's Quarry: Love and politics
By JANE STEVENSON
MORRISSEY
You Are The Quarry
(Attack-Sanctuary)
**** (out of five)
"AMERICA, YOU know where you can shove your hamburger."
So goes America Is Not The World, the first song on Morrissey's first solo album in seven years.
Despite the fact The Crown Prince of Mope Rock has been living in L.A. recently, he definitely has a conflicted relationship with the U.S.
"Where the president is never black, female or gay, and until that day, you've got nothing to say to me," he continues on the otherwise wonderfully melodic pop song.
Co-writing all dozen tracks with longtime guitarists Alain Whyte and Boz Boorer, Morrissey also takes on politics back home on the thumping, vibrant Irish Blood, English Heart: "I've been dreaming of a time when the English are sick to death of Labour and Tories and spit upon the name Oliver Cromwell."
Politics aside, romantic longing continues to be Morrissey's favourite subject matter on such standouts as Come Back To Camden, Let Me Kiss You and All The Lazy Dykes. Elsewhere, there's real energy -- and possibly radio hits? -- to be found on the rollicking First Of The Gang To Die and I Like You.
And he still hasn't lost his trademark sense of humour on The World Is Full Of Crashing Bores, where he saves his most vitriolic lyrics for fellow music stars: "Thicker than pig s--t, nothing to convey, so afraid to show intelligence, it might smear their lovely career."
All in all, Morrissey -- who co-headlines Lollapalooza Aug. 5-6 at the Molson Amphitheatre -- is back in top form.

You Americans simply can't take criticism of your countries.
In England we have had so much grief over the stuff that actually defines as being English - and do we complain... no.
C'mon you boys, you can't be sensitive now it's your turn.
