IBEH is in at number 2 in the UK midweek chart. Likely to drop towards the end of the week as we, the fanbase, were of course out in force yesterday but a top 5 placing seems likely and at the very least a top 10 position. All in all a victorious return for Mozza.

  • UK charts (Score:4, Informative)

Just a quick note to people outside the UK (and those that are in the UK) about the UK charts.

There is only one official UK singles chart, and that is the one read out on Radio 1 from 4pm to 7pm every Sunday (UK time). The 'Midweek chart' whilst it does give a reliable indication of how the records are doing during the week, is not the official chart. For example, Morrissey is NOT at number 2 in the charts now, he has just been selling enough so that if the charts were announced today, he would be at number two. However the charts are not announced until Sunday so he has to keep his sales up until then. This, as others have commented, is unlikely, as acts with hardcore fanbases usually do better during the week, whilst the 'big singles' see steady sales throughout the week as people buy them on impulse, or when they happen to be at the local shops.

If you want to listen to the official chart countdown, you can listen to an audio stream at the radio 1 website (part of the BBC website). It will be from 4pm to 7pm British Summer time this Sunday (they play all the records in full as they count them down, so the top five is not announced until some time after 6pm).

  • I used to be involved somewhat with the record industry, and was sent an advance (my friends remembered my ferverent fanaticism in all things Morrissey) of YATQ, and my kids LOVE it! My daughter, who is 11, is trying to memorize all the words, and loves singing the songs at school. She is anti-rap, and doesn't want to be "just another face in the crowd." This, from the girl who just a few months ago was singing "Hey Ya" and whatever else was on the pop stations. She's always liked Morrissey, but never with such ferver as she does now.

My son, on the other hand, has two Moz posters in his room, and (get this) he's NINE! He absolutely adores Morrissey, and has borrowed most of my Moz CD's to play in his room as he goes to sleep.

I will STILL buy this CD, however, as I want to make sure Steven gets his nickel from my hours and hours of endless joy he's brought me (and will continue to bring me) with this amazing CD.

Also, it says on the above link that IBEH sold 12,000 on Monday alone. Hopefully it will sell another 12,000 otherwise top 5 will be difficult.

  • Hi, I know this is off-topic but since this seems to be the thread that most people are responding to, I thought I'd stick it here. Anyway, great to see another brace of good reviews after the ignimony of Q and Uncut (Uncut's review actually has very little good to say about the album if you read it carefully, despite giving three out of 5). Though I intend to buy the album and form my own judgement, I was getting a little despondent about the mediocre reception Quarry appeared to be getting, and I'm sure I'm not the only one, but then I got to thinking. Actually, this album has been very well received indeed. Consider the list below:

EXCELLENT REVIEWS from MOJO (4*), NME (8/10), The Times (4*), Rolling Stone Germany (5*), Attitude Magazine (5*), Zoo Magazine (5*), Random German magazine whose name I can't remember (10/10), Ramon magazine (3/3), Planet Sound (Teletext), playlouder.com and Word magazine.

AVERAGE/FAIRLY GOOD REVIEWS from FHM, Uncut (but 3* still = 'good'), The Observer.

POOR REVIEWS from John Harris in Q and, er, John Harris in The Times.

Looks like Dear John is out on a limb. Oh, how we laughed........

Still reviews to come from All Music Guide, The Guardian, Record Collector, Rolling Stone (USA), The Independent, Pitchfork media among others.

And all the critics (bar Harris) have praised IBEH as a single.

So looking at that list, I think we can feel pretty proud of Moz's progress in the press so far. As I think I said before, he was just deeply unlucky that the two worst reviews were published into the two best-selling music monthlies.

  • In response to the B-side discussion, I have come to the conclusion that this is the best b-side of the three. It is actually quite beautiful, and if John Harris could hear it maybe he'd revise (if only slightly) his view of the new lyrics. Avoiding any discussion of the court case, Morrissey on this track tackles love, loss, regret and happiness most tenderly. I listened to it again this morning and found myself deeply moved by the lines "And you jumped into my face/And laughed/And kissed me on the cheek/And then were gone/Forever". These lines, and the way he sings them, perfectly capture those brief moments of illusory bliss that are over all too soon. His voice rises euphorically then lowers again bathetically as he sings "were gone/Forever". Brilliant! He is still the master of lyrical and vocal phrasing. This is the kind of great songwriting we want from Moz - those lyrics are worthy to stand with his Smiths work, and I don't say that about the whole Quarry album by any means. If only the production wasn't so pristine though!

  • having two different B-sides.

I had to buy both copies out of pathological curiousity. And after 7 years of nothing £5 is not a lot pay for two singles priced differently (he demands that we buy both versions hoping he can get to Number 1 - IBEH will most certainly chart in the Top 5 going by mid-week chart I saw in Woolworths's today.)

So far, 'Munich Air Disaster 1958' is my favourite B side. The couplet:

"I wish I'd gone down, gone down with them
To where Mother nature makes their bed"

brings a tear to my eye.

Aren't they some of his most beautiful lyrics?

  • People do not seem to be responding to the cries to do our level best to get this single to number 1! We can do it! If everyone going to the MEN arena gig alone bought both singles, that would be near 40,000 sales. The singles are two quid, so if everyone buys two copies of each, the 8 quid spent would be more than worth it to see Morrisseys first ever u.k number one, It would be a kick in the balls to radio one, who listed the 7 new releases likely to challenge in the charts and didnt even mention IBEH. And it would be a fitting gesture to our beloved Morrissey.

    12 May 2004

Morrissey is No.2 at the moment, and that's not a put down.

No, the pope of mope is second place in this week's pop charts so far, and the only thing that stands between him and being at the top of the nation's hit parade is Frankee.

Frankee is apparently Eamon's ex-girlfriend, and she looks likely to get to No.1 this weekend with 'Fuck You Right Back', a response to Eam's No.1 'Fuck You (I Don't Want You Back)' - surely the most lame riposte since "yeah, I know you are."

Morrissey has more wit and invention in his penis than these pair of foul mouthed fools, and he's spent most of his life not doing any shagging! Make Moz No.1. Go and buy 'Irish Blood, English Heart' right now! We beseech you.

In the album charts Keane seem to be way outselling The Streets, which probably indicates that Eamon's "ex" will make it to the summit on Sunday. Heaven knows...

Absolutely. The nearest rival, Christian Milan, at four, has sold less than ten thousand.

Eamon, the current number one, is at two with 17 thousand plus sales with Frankee running away with it at the top, with 30 thousand plus.

  • Apparently, Rolling Stone (USA) have reviewed Quarry in the current issue - I checked their website and the review is not up, so can anyone enlighten us further as to the nature of the review. All I have heard so far is that it is favourable - anyone fancy doing a transcript?

Anyway, while I was there I checked the archive reviews to see if Quarry appeared there, and it didn't (this did not surprise me but the review was not on the main page either, which is unusual - D12 were the latest.) BUT - who would have thought Rolling Stone were such Mozophiles?! 4 stars for Vauxhall and Arsenal is to be expected, but they gave 4 stars to Maladjusted, 3 and a half to World of Morrissey (panned in many places) and even Southpaw gets a three! And all this in a major music mag, not just some outlying (though no doubt perfectly good) mag in Norway or somewhere. And to think someone said Rolling Stone is the American equivalent of Q. At least some of their staff must have good taste!

  • Some depressing (and irritating) news - I have it on good authority that JOHN HARRIS will appear with Bonnie Greer and Rosie Boycott on Newsnight Review to review 'You Are The Quarry'. He has been on the programme before reviewing albums (he slated George Michael's 'Patience'), and he, along with Paul Morley, is kind of regarded as the music expert (in the same way they have Mark Kermode for films etc). Why, oh why, does Harris need to speak again? He had his say in Q - the fact that he failed to explain his view properly in there is his own fault and should not mean he has to go spouting his mouth off everywhere. Why isn't Victoria Segal, or Lisa Verrico, or anyone who likes the album, also being given a chance to talk again?

  • Isn't there some risk that if the chart compilers suspect too many people are buying multiple copies of the single or too many copies are being bought in the UK from overseas that they will discount a certain number? I think I remember something about The Creatures last year having two thirds of their sales discounted because they were either multiple purchases of different versions or from America - and their single was placed at something like #50 instead of #10. Buy furtively! Say one of them is for your sister!

He is on TOTP tommorrow night and Jonathan Ross, CD:uk video play the next day (LOL - i find this particularly amusing) and Razor Cuts on Virgin radio on sunday.

Then Jools Holland the week after...

Don't give up hope - who knows how many sheepish, vacant idiots he could wake up on Friday night on TOTP... especially if he is sandwiched between effing Frankee (WTF) .... It will be great to see him juxtaposed with all those no talent suckers of satan's cock.

Have hope - by Sunday he will be Number 2 and if the idiots don't win he will be number one.

We all know its not someting to dote on (The No.1)- - chart success has never been important...

but it would be nice... a little thank you to moz for all the years.
