I'm sorry to keep ranting about this track, but it wipes the floor with virtually all of David Bowie's 1970s output, and then minces around all over the record while Bowie sits in the corner wearing the dunce's hat.

It's got everything - beautiful singing, memorable melody, great musicianship and more hooks than your average Marks and Spencer's clothes rack.

In my top 20 ever Morrissey/smiths songs.

Thank you Morrissey, I'd forgotten how wonderful you can be :)

So three new songs to mull over.

        1. It's Hard To Walk Tall When You're Small
Disappointing I think and probably the weakest new song I've heard. A plodding rocker with some dodgy lyrics (Ringo? Campadre?). Shame it's on the 7-inch as it's the worst of the three. I believe that the original version of the song with music by Spencer Cobrin (a planned Maladjusted era B-side in 1997) is much better, slower and sophisticated even?

        2. Munich Air Disaster 1958
Grows after a few listens. The lyrics are a bit corny but musically sounds like some of the better Southpaw/Maladjusted material. Great drumming at the end so maybe Deano is not as useless as some people think?

        3. THE NEVER PLAYED SYMPHONIES!!!
As discussed on message board of this site, this song is FANTASTIC and may well be the best new Morrissey song of this whole comeback. Incredibly moving with beautiful grandiose music - this is to You Are The Quarry what Lost was to Maladjusted or Nobody Loves Us to Southpaw Grammar (ie the best song of that era cruelly shoved away as a B-side instead of being on the album). If anybody is remotely cynical about this whole comeback then PLEASE I urge you to buy CD2 to get this song alone. It's magnificent.

Overall - apart from 'Small', Morrissey still offers one okay and one absolute all-time best B-side. An encouraging sign I think, even if Quarry may suffer from the absence of The Never Played Symphonies. I'm already salivating over the prospect of the next wave of B-sides (presumably Slum Mums and Don't Make Fun Of Daddy's Voice will be there?).

The single seems to be selling reasonably....I work in one of the large chains.....sadly not as well as Bovril Lavigne's latest tantrum, but that's to be expected...there has always been somewhat of a stigma attached to buying a Morrissey single if you're not a die-hard - many an acquaintance has expressed a liking for previous singles (Certain People I Know being one in particular) but have gone on to say they have no intention of purchasing it......so it seems that as with almost every previous release this will - hopefully - dent the top ten then descend rapidly.......such a shame for an incendiary two minutes and forty four seconds.
The b-sides, as with most singles, reveal Morrissey's love for the format - ideally the seven inch single, but embracing the two CD single idea - in that some of finest work is to be found on the 'other side'.
All three tracks could surely easily grace the forthcoming album, but the b-side is a the reward for the true.....

The US version looks much more appealing - all the b-sides are just on the one CD, whereas here we have to buy two CDs to get them all. This is because of those wretched chart rules. Before of coure, Morrissey singles could have 3 b-sides on just the one CD. No wonder the singles market is dying.

It's hard to believe the person who put so much thought and effort into the design of all the Smiths' singles let the same cover be used for both version of the CD. Of all the bands I like who unfortunately play in these same double CD-single waters (Suede, Beautiful South, Gene, Pet Shop Boys), none of them ever uses the *exact* same cover for both versions of the single. Correct me on a specific example if you want, but the basic idea is accurate enough. Even Boy Racer (which was one of his lazier releases in terms of content) had two different pictures. *shakes head*
