Night 2 - Tuesday, May 4, 2004

You know, this is a dangerous thing. I'm going to keep thinking that I can simply walk a few blocks every evening, and there he'll be, ready to entertain me. I could really get used to this, and I am.

I watched David Johansen's entire set tonite, and it was fun. Nothing great, but loads of fun. He is the world's greatest Mick Jagger impersonator. I am interested in learning more about the NY Dolls and his solo career. Gotta say, he's still really fit and skinny!

Tonite's set list was nearly the same, but he did not perform "Let Me Kiss You" or "The Headmaster Ritual" and added "A Rush And A Push," which drove the audience wild!

Even with a similar set list, tonite's show had a totally different feel. Morrissey was much more laid back and really funny! He took out time to poke fun at Bush and kept making these unintelligable croaking and mumbling noises during the songs. His voice was fantastic again tonite, even with his "Harlem Sniffles." The audience may have been a little more into it this evening, hard to tell. It was definitely louder, as far as I could tell, and I don't know if that's a good thing or not. I don't like it when it's so loud that you lose quality.

I was really into one of the newer songs tonite, "How Could Anybody Possibly Know How I Feel?" It's really catchy!

I was also really enjoying Dean Butterworth's drumming. He is an exceptional drummer, and I find that most drummers are not too exceptional. He's fun to watch and hear.

Everyone in the band, Morrissey included, was looking a bit more stylish tonite. Morrissey came out in a white (tan?) dress jacket and once again threw his shirt into the crowd, causing mass hysteria.

"I'm Not Sorry" is still a major highlight, and "Jack The Ripper" was even more "ripping" tonite.

I met some nice girls on the subway after the show, and they told me about a Morrissey tribute band that's performing downtown Thursday. Doubt I'll go. I hate tribute bands. Nothing can compare to Morrissey. How can he infuse so much wit and raw emotion into each performance? Still in Heaven here! I'm definitely going to the afterparty on Saturday.

Moss has the setlist correct, however I Like You was also played tonight!

i enjoyed the concert very much, but i am slightly upset. Will Morrissey always talk about what he feels, wants, thinks?? i feel the songs are more self-involved than ever... maybe i am growing up, (26 years old), maybe morrissey is more self involved these days... priorities change... he is on every magazine, lots of talk tv/radio shows and music festival... either he is hungry for the spot light, more than ever... or we have lost him, is he trying to save music by putting himself out there? i enjoyed his elusiveness, but now 5 shows??? that's disgusting really. was that paris hilton in the vip boxed seats??

you know what guys, i have gotten 3 hours of sleep in the last 36 hours, recovering from my flight back from coachella.. i will feel better tomorrow, sing me to sleep...

we must vote! morrissey is right on about bush, he is a crashing murderous bore!

and julia, get a life... or start singing duets with moz, get a function, nancy sinatra did.

I have to say, tonight's show was MUCH better than Monday's show. I LOVED hering "A Rush and A Push" although the "Headmaster Ritual" from last night was pretty impressive. Morrissey didn't interact as much with the audience as much as last night but overall the show was better. I can't wait until Thursday and Friday, it's so amazing seeing him after a few years. :)

my friend kept getting kicked from behind. for the entire show. finally he turned around. he gave the kid a "final warning." he seemed like a rich drunk white brat that had never been warned before. and who's parents have probably payed for everything in his life. so he couldn't fathom someone giving him orders. he called my friend "gay" and told him to get a haircut. my friend doesn't play around like that. he told him to meet him outside after the show.

the rich kid's friend realized that he would've been pummeled by my friend in two punches. so he kept saying, "it's cool man. it's alright." i was trying to work myself up. in case i had to step in and throw a few punches.

but i was really scared. i am always too scared to fight. even in my dreams i never throw punches. i am always too scared.

unless i am drunk. or listening to "hand in glove."

I was wondering if anyone could tell me, in any detail, how the seating in the front was? I was lucky enough to get front row seats, although it ment skipping a couple of bills. I thought it was all seating by ticket and you could stand if you chose (and why wouldn't you). But it sounds like you could walk up close to the stage and its more standing.

does he rub that tree stump thing before he goes on?

I'd like to thank the dude who traded seats with me in the upper left mezzeanine. It was a great view. Whoever sits in the lower half of the upper mezz, don't worry, the view was great! To the woman in Row H left upper mezz: were you going up front because of my big headand dancing? If so, I'm sorry!

Anyway, it was a great show! The crowd was into it, but not as much as the shows from years ago. Everyone sat down the whole time, which was a good thing. The seats were crammped, but it wasn't bad because no one was in the seat next to me. I did like the glittering backdrop. I thought it would've been funny if it was the "Amateur night" backdrop or if Moz rubbed the Tree of Hope before he came out!

What was the point of the gong? What about that keyboard/bongo/tamborine guy, Mickey? He wasn't necessary. You could do those sounds with a guitar. I dunno. These 2 things, I thought, didn't improve the songs.

I hope Friday is as good as tonight or better.

Alright, what's with the lilac sticking out his crotch? The man has gone bloody daft! Big Time!
And thank goodness for that!

Random observations:
1. Even with his "harlem mumps," morrissey was brilliant. His cold was less noticeable as the night went on and the place heated up.
2. Actor Michael Imperioli (Sopranos/Christopher Moltisanti) was in the crowd. Yay!
3. Morrissey once more bantered with Julia even after some cad yelled "who cares" (morrissey responded "I care") when he asked the crowd to guess how many shows she'd been to (220!). Morrissey told her she needed a haircut bad.
4. Great mix of new and old. His rant against George W Bush for daring to smile ('more soldiers were killed the other day; the man should not be smiling but he does') preceded "The World is Full of Crashing Bores." He begged folks to get out and vote this fall. "I know it's gonna happen" had me in tears and "A Rush and a Push" and "Hand in Glove" were uber-treats but his performance of "Jack the Ripper" was breathtaking. God bless the Gong!
5. The band was great. I forget the name of the guy on the keyboards but he worked his ass off. And Deano was a favorite of the gay boys - and not just for his drumming. Hot! Hot! Hot!
6. This was the night reviewers were in the audience. I hope they're kind!
7. No one made it on stage, which was too bad.
8. The security there was amazing. Remarked to a friend of mine, I can't imagine what the mens lining the front of the stage thought of Moz, the crowd and the adulation. ("Freaks!" I am sure).
9. Was in Orchestra seats. Everyone stood the whole time and found the generally older crowd was energetic but reserved. We all kinda acted out age, which was unfortunate. But the place was not dead by any means as some folks remark of the NY crowds. We, like Morrissey, just don't flit about as easily as we did 20 or even 10 years ago.
10. I ask again, what's with the lilac (one of my favorite flowers). It shows he has good taste at least. Much better than a gladioli!

The Quarry review is interesting. Says it's the best thing he's done since Vauxhall but that he's also done cheese and ricotta canneloni dishes which are the best thing he's done since Vauxhall!

Crashing Bores is considered the highlight of the album, and other songs receiving praise include Camden, First of the Gang, Let me kiss you, and I like you. The 'disappointments' are lsited as I'm not sorry, All the lazy dykes and You Know (a sour sag in the album's tail).
The review ends by saying 'Hey hey El Moz is back: now our hearts are re-filled'.

I certainly hope that "A Rush and a Push..." stays on the setlist for Friday and Saturday, when I will be attending., however, I don't want it to be at the expense of "The Headmaster Ritual!" Crossing my fingers...

Hello all! Tues.show was awesome...anyone living on LI and thinking of driving DO IT! it was easy...Grand Central to Triboro bridge get off at the 125th st exit.Than just cut across town to W125th and the Apollo will be on your right.
Moz was great saw him in Vegas and just as good.

at the end of the day...it is getting very very crashing boring that Moz constantly has to talk to her at every show. Why is she so special to point it out every fucking time. If he wouldn't give her so much attention EVERY time, then maybe there wouldn't be such a fuzz about this girl.

I agree though, that she is nice. I once was in the front row with her...and if i would have the money I would travel to every gig too.
