In Sunday's Calender section of the Los Angeles Times (Pop Eye - Steve Hochman):

Morrissey tells how he really feels
Morrissey may have gone seven years since his last album, but the English singer's notoriously terse, tart tongue has not been blunted in the interim.

Asked if the producers of VH1's "Bands Reunited" series had the temerity to approach him about a Smiths episode, given the famously bitter rift between him and former bandmate Johnny Marr, he offered, "I'm standing at the top window with an air rifle, waiting for them to arrive."

That attitude bodes well for fans who waited out the hiatus for his new album, "You Are the Quarry," due May 18. The layoff has not changed their hero one bit.

"I still think the human race is vastly overrated," he says, summing up the tone of his new material. "It's a bit of an emotional splurge, but it couldn't be any other way, to be honest."

The pent-up emotions, he says, came from his inability to find a satisfactory label to sign with. That changed last year when he made a deal with Sanctuary Records. Then, in a move that helped sharpen the attack of the songs, he teamed with Jerry Finn, a California producer known for his work with Green Day and Blink-182.

"It would have been easier to go with someone who was somewhat safer," Morrissey says. "But I thought Jerry was a risk, and it's a risk that worked fantastically well. The music is very emotive, very incendiary, difficult to ignore."

  • Asked if the producers of VH1's "Bands Reunited"...

That's just awesome to hear/read from Moz.

And i'm so pleased with Morrissey being happy with his album, that's awesome news. I hope it doesn't turn out to be a Zwan-Mary Star of The Sea, with all the fans complaining about it being too 'HAPPY', and 'WE WANT OUR OLD MOZ BACK'.

I hope he blows our minds away.

Well I cetainly wouldn't want Mozzer to go down THAT path...

Still, a life sentence in jail might do the Mozzelle the world of good. At least that way he can appeal to that whole hip hop, rap segment of hardened nonces 'doing time'.

  • wow, this is weird..I was wathching vh1's bands reunited with berlin(very exciting!) and I thought, I wonder if Mozz would ever reunite with his ex-band mates...then I thought, naaa, he would probably be at the top window with an air rifle waiting for them to arrive.........true story

  • it's great to hear Moz talking up the new album. I think it's gonna be something really special. just a bit of a shame that the lead-off single doesn't showcase his true songwriting skills (no humour, observation or poetry), and risks re-igniting the whole nationalistic, flag-waving debate from the most depressing part of his career, instead of moving forward and putting the past firmly behing him. oh well, will he ever learn?

  • This is it, my fellow Mozamaniacs!

This is the beginning of ....well, somethin'!

    Somethin' big!

As epic as a Cecil B. DeMille picture!

As sweet as a Mary Pickford short!

As witty as a Marx Bros. comedy!

As sexy as a Lana Turner film!

And as charming as a Cary Grant feature!

I can't wait to hear what new, exciting, sexy adventures he and the lads have cooked up.

Yes ...May 18... watch out USSA, here comes the Moz! Do do do do, And I say "It's all right"!

  • I thought the reason why The Smiths never could or would reunite wasn't because there was a rift between Morrissey and Johnny, but because of Mike Joyce and Andy Rourke, and the whole lawsuit situation. Not that I'm expecting any sentimental duets between Morrissey and Marr!

  • What a relief, it's sounds like he's still got something to say with the new album. I don't think the day will ever come when Moz "sells out".

Don't chase the market Morrissey - let it come to you. The time for a Moz revival is now, people are sick of the manufactured rubbish that is entering the charts every week. VIVA MORRISSEY!

  • When will people finally realise, that it is a blessing and a privilege, that THE SMITHS won't EVER reunite? How can anyone genuinly think that they (read Mozzer and Johnny) could ever come up with something as special and transcendentally good, as when they were around from '82 - '87? Just look at all those bloody useless reunions over the last couple of years, or at the mediocre "Boomslang " album of Johnny's HEALERS. I'm so relieved about the fact, that they broke up, before they could become a self parody of themselves, and leave with such a musical and lyrical legacy, only rivaled by JOY DIVISION! Nevertheless, I'm more than looking forward to his new album, as I really likded the new songs far better, than most of "Maladjusted"!! Concerning the beginning of my comment, I'll leave this topic with the recommendation not to beat a dead horse...and thanks to Morrissey for still being so stubborn and therefore never participating in any useless reunion!!

  • if he'd shoot them, imagine what he'd do to Mike Joyce. I don't think there's a definition for it in the dictionary.

besides, how can Morrissey shoot animals?
