From the Undercover Media website (link)

Morrissey is back in the studio working on his first new album since 1997's 'Maladjusted'.

Producer Jerry Finn is driving the controls for the new record. "It sounds great" he tells Undercover News.

Work is a fair way down the track but we won't see the album until well into 2004. "The Moz record won't be out until next May or so" Jerry says.

Morrissey will also bring the album out as an indie (although the particular indie is now through BMG). "He is signed to Sanctuary records" he says.

Finn is quickly becoming a veteran of the recording studio having worked previously with AFI, Green Day, Blink 182, The Living End, MxPx, Rancid and Pennywise but we suspect his finest moment every should be as assistant engineer on 'A Very Chipmunk Christmas' for Alvin and the Chipmunks.

According to Channel 4 Teletext the new Morrissey LP has a tentative release Date of May 2004, and also the first single to be taken from the Lp is "First of the gang to die"

  • Another 6 month wait-Yes!!! This is great. When they say 6 months it is usually at least 9 months and sometimes longer. It has only been 6+ years since the last Morrissey release so what is another year?

  • Another six months, jesus. I fear it's going to be one of those 24-track concept album abominations. Let's hope songs like The Teachers Are Afraid of the Pupils, Southpaw Grammar and the toe-curling Papa Jack are noticable by their fcuking absence. By the way has anyone listened to The Smiths lately. The lead singer sounds remarkably like Morrissey.

  • I really hope that whenever this album finally appears that the songs are actually brand new and exciting (ie none of those 2002 Tour songs, except maybe 'Irish Blood..'). I hope that the first single will be something we've never heard before with a great title, great lyrics and a killer melody. PLEASE don't let it be 'The First Of The Gang To Die' - it's a nice enough song but it's just typical late-Nineties Maladjusted-era Moz, not a great comeback.

We need a 'Last Of The Famous International Playboys' or a 'November Spawned A Monster'. We need something that totally confounds and surprises. Anything of the 'Roy's Keen' ilk and it'll be, quite literally, THE END!

  • Surely it's not for technical or mastering reasons? People will say "what's another 6 months after 6 years?" and I say "Another bloody half year!".

Singles usually follow an album, but in this case it'd be good to have a First of the Gang record out in the new year, with some b-sides to tide us over!

Voyage to the Bottom of Morrissey
  • In my opinion, FOTGTD is a great song. Just as good as "playboys" if not bett...well I'll stop before someone chews my head off. For the hardcore, of course it's a over-a-year-old song but to the general music-buying audience it'll be new. Now having said that...It'll fail. No matter what Moz releases at this point it will not fare well in the US or UK charts. Let's say "suedehead" was just now being released, do you really think it would be a hit? For the most part, Moz's style of music has never flowed with whatever the current tide of music was and I believe 2004 will be no exception. I hope I am wrong but even if I'm not, I don't care. I know I'll be buying the singles and album as will a lot of other fans. As for the not-so-new songs previewed on the last tour, everyone has their favorite and least favorite. I hope they all see a studio version release. Maybe not all as album track but as b-sides (ie "mexico" seems to be a verse short from what he's trying to convey, IMO). I have my $18.99 burning a hole in my wallet ready to be spent on the new album.

  • Throughout Moz's solo career, I always feel that we've been served up the bare minimum when it comes to songs and b-sides. If there is ever the easy way out, then Morrissey always seems to take that route. It would be nice after such a long wait since the last album, that we actually get more than we bargined for. The 'new' songs from the last tour should now be shelved and we get 12 or 14 brand new tracks - it'll probably be the end for me as a fan, if he does decide to release 'last of the gang' as the new single - I want something that makes me proud to be a Moz fan apart from living on the output of the Smiths - The sort of song that has the impact of Charming Man or I Know it's Over. Fans are kidding themselves if the think anything he's done since Vauxhall has come anywhere near the Smiths stuff. I love Moz, I love how he looks, I love he interviews and I love seeing him live but I wouldn't have been attracted to his music if I only had the solo stuff to go on.

  • We learned over the summer that recording would take place in the fall (i.e., now) and the album would be out in the first half of '04. And even if the latter hadn't been stated, it could have easily been inferred given that there's almost always a 4-6 month gap between an album's completion and its release.

Maladjusted was recorded in winter of '97 and didn't see the light of day until August of that year. Similarly, sessions for Your Arsenal took place at the start of '92 and the album arrived in late July.

A couple of things regarding this 1st single fuss. Consider the source -- this isn't "news"; it's just a rumor from Teletext. But if Hector is the first single, there are still far more important things in life than the choice of an A-side.

It's sad to see, fair enough you've waited this long but the only reason in the delay is to make the album as great as possible. I'm sure if it was out next week there would be people complaining it was too short after the start of recording. As for TFOTGTD as the first single that has NOT been confirmed, it could be something totally different and yet unheard by you good people, this is Morrissey you're talking about after all. The album could be out well before May, least he's back in the studio and things are going great, i enjoy that fact alone.

Say what you will about Blink 182 (those who say negative things about them are usually the ones who never listened to them) but Enema of the State and Take Off Your Pants and Jacket were really well produced. "Going Away to College" is as good as anything Morrissey has written in a long, long time. I agree FOTGTD is not the mind blowing song to release first.

The More You Ignore was his best solo single b/c it was relevant to popular radio. To me, an interpretation of that song could be as if the song is directed at modern radio and the fact they don't play his music.

  • Morrissey sucks because he doesn't recognize that his current band sucks, and we have lowered our standards immensely by saying we love "your arsenal" and "vauxhall and I" was off the hizzle because the next records really sounded different. Though I think Morrissey should continue to rock but please use single-coil pick-ups and write more impressively comprehensive song titles, in fact make every lyric of a particular song, that particular song's title. And since when did booze boozer or whatever his name is qualify as a good musician. Remember when you detested The Polecats choppy rendition of "John, I'm only Dancing".

most of all, Morrissey, Do your best and Don't worry...... I think we should be happy that he was able to vent about being rich and then having to pay out money to the other Smiths and now just being rich. maybe it's taken him so long because he's been unable to write any material which did not include any references to having to pay money to ingrates who don't deserve their place in the band to begin with. I've said this before, Johnny Marr and Morrissey need to reunite and take over, and the addition of the other Smiths would be advantageous as well. Maybe keep Gary Day and Recruit Rusty James on Harmonica - brian bell

  • I hope Morrissey is also taking time to workout and get in shape before his comeback. I reckon he could knock ten years off if he worked at it. I don't think he is getting enough protein, being a vegetarian. He need to eat complete proteins (mainly animal based) for proper nutrition. If he is eating incomplete proteins he can still get complete protein by mixing the correct foods. For instance, Rice with pulses. Oats are high in protein and very bland which would suit Morrissey as he doesn't like anything exotic.

  • My comment is a little different than most. My advice to Morrissey is to not rush the recording now. Take you time, make it top-notch. This is probably Moz's last chance to revive his career. Let's face facts, Morrissey will be 45 in 2004, the window is closing. It could be his last hurrah as far as stardom goes. He is on a roll and yet his legacy, his credibility is on the line. Rolling Stone Magazine had 4 Smiths albums in the 500 greatest albums ever list. That qualifies them as rock royalty! We're talking about a band that lasted 4 years! Morrissey solo could have easily been on the list with "Viva Hate" and "Your Arsenal" or even "Bona Drag." What he should not do now is rush the new album just to appease you spoiled, inpatient fans. If he does, you'll get "Maladjusted part II." The other thing he must do is get back in shape. We live in a very image-conscious world and let's face it, looking at photos from his last tour (I live in Michigan so he hasn't been around since 2000) he is a good 20 pounds heavier than he was just 3 years ago. The very image of Morrissey is that of a lean, handsome outsider, not of a pudgy, balding has-been. He is afterall, Morrissey!! not Van Morrison. With the release of the new album, I'm sure he will be making many public appearances, not to mention a large tour so he has to look right. Hit the weights, run a few miles a day, stay away from the potato chips, and concentrate on making the best songs you can. Your career depends on it!!!!

Having waited six years, and having trawled through the endless crap on this site everyday in search of "news" for the last four years..having believed Moz would never get a deal at all...it would just be absolutely self-defeating to not buy the record (or to copy or download it). Why? Duh! Because if everyone decided to boycott it, Morrissey would be out of a record deal very quickly and it would probably take another 12 years for the next record!

And to those people who think Jerry Finn means a continuation of "Southpoor" (sic) style rock...well, it just as easily mean a Ronson "Your Arsenal" type production. And that wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing.

We will surely get about 9 or 10 songstotal, 5 being played live already and the other 5 are gonna be lame as well. Let's face it..Moz needs to give it up and let us remember him in a good way. There is nothing wrong with retiring in a respectable way. I would seriously rather hear a full album featuring covers of old standards such as Moonriver. I bet it would be a hell of a lot better than his new disc will be. He definitely needs a new band at this point if he is to carry on.
