Believe it or not, the new single of the Russian (pseudo-lesbian) pop-catastrophe tatu is "How Soon Is Now?"

Heard it this morning in a German radio-station called "Das Ding". It will be released in about four weeks and sounds pretty awful...

Morissey Calls t.A.T.u.'s Version of 'How Soon Is Now?' "Magnificent"

Morissey, former singer of The Smiths, who originally wrote and performed the song "How Soon Is Now?" in 1984 had this to say about t.A.T.u. in the U.K.'s Word Magazine:

Word: Did you hear t.A.T.u.'s version of "How Soon Is Now?"

Morissey: Yes, it was magnificent. Absolutely. Again, I don't know much about them.

Word: They are teenage Russian lesbians.

Morissey: Well, aren't we all?

  • What do you make of TATU's cover of How Soon Is Now?

I love it. I like the way they sing 'I am yeoman and I need to be loved'. A yeoman is a small farmer from the 1700's, isn't it? I had no idea that song was all about small farmers.

The song is awful, especially when they hit the "When you say it's gonna happen now..." part.

  • Why I Wept (Score:3, Funny)

I woke up early this morning, and for some reason Morrissey was on my mind. Then I switch on the computer, took a peek at Morrissey-solo and see that T.Atu are releasing ‘How Soon Is Now’. I’ve no problem with this.
Then I thought about The Smiths on ‘Top Of The Pops’ in 1985 and Morrissey pretending to slaughter the audience with a machine gun. What a fantastic moment in pop history, I had to go and find it on video. YES! It was just as brilliant as I remembered it. And it made me weep. I’m 34 and it made me weep. I’ve been a fan since the first single and it made me weep. IT MADE ME WEEP!
Why? Because no one would have the audacity, intelligence or bravery to machine-gun the TOTP audience now.

No one has the brains or the words.

There is no one like Morrissey.

There is no one who would rail against the fake, false, controlled, sterile, balloon-and-party-hat atmosphere of TOTP. This piss poor right wing conservative country I live in, full of Big Brother obsessed dorks and awful, AWFUL chart ‘bands’. I wept.

I used to make a nuisance of myself on his doorstep in Manchester. Plaster my walls with his image. Back-bedroom rebel bombarding him with appalling prose. And he was always kind, charming, when he should have told me to piss off.

Now I’m married, but, like my Dad dying, the girl who broke my heart at 19, and the dog that got killed, I will never get over him. This unattainable man in Comme De Garcon. This man who machine-gunned the idiots on Top Of The Pops.

So, this is why I will always forgive Morrissey. Annoying, frustrating, handsome, sexy, self-destructive man. Too clever by half and daft as cake by the other half.
I want to see T.Atu take the same risks. Dare they? No, of course not, because their controversy is stage managed and fake. Words are put into their mouths and clothes are hung on their bodies for them.
There is no one like Morrissey. I will love him always. Chunky Morrissey; even if he grows obese and has to be wheeled on in an industrial wheelbarrow I will listen.

I’ve just read back what I’ve written and I sound crazed….

    Well F*** it!

  • You shut your mouth, Morrissey! How can you say it is a good cover? Why not "better than the original" while you're at it?

    Reminder:
"Tatu’s Julia Volkova told NME that she had never heard of The Smiths before being given the song to sing: "[The producers] just put it on for us and we decided it was worth a try. Frankly speaking, we hadn’t known this group." "

If I ever come across this bugger Trevor Horn (the fucking producer guilty of this botch), I'll smahs every tooth in his head, or something equivalent.
    This is not idle talk.

I've heard Tatu's version a couple of times: really sounds like they don't understand a single word they're singing. Which is obviously the case.

The tatu lp is brimming with visceral, ecstatic pop. The smiths cover is the least edifying thing on it.

Musical history is all about artifice, rappers pretending to be trigger happy, singers making about they are more literate/working class/debauched/promiscuous/intense/bizarre than they really are and shedloads of gay clean cut popsters trying to convince the public that they are straight.

How come when two presumably hetero girls sing passionate, well written songs (with lyrics that are frankly more inspiring than anything in 'crashing bores' et al) with a twist of potted controversy (the will they/won't they kiss) they are instantly demonized.

A worldwide number one single that contains the lyric 'i'm feeling for her what she's feeling for me' amidst an evocative tale of angst-ridden forbidden love surely qualifies as at least a minor musical milestone. I can't think of a similar mainstream success that embraced such themes in half a century of pop.

It certainly doesn't warrant knee-jerk vilification.

everytime i hear a new version of "how soon is now?", i cringe knowing that no smith - in their right mind - would allow it, and that's including craig gannon.

  • Jesus. I only read a few posts before I got bored. Oh wow, you're mad because they're playing around as if they're gay. Gee, didn't David Bowie do that? He even wanted Mick Ronson to pretend he was gay. Doesn't Morrissey play around that he might be into girls, or guys, or neither, or who knows? All I know is it was cute to see the tATu girls holding hands while singing at the MTV Movie Awards last week.

As I've already said in the message board area, I have their CD and I think it's fun. I'm already tired of a lot of the songs, and I'm sure it won't be long before I file the CD away and rarely listen to it again. But I don't think they're bad. I'm particularly fond of the song "Malchik Gay," in addition to "How Soon Is Now?" Yes, their cover of "How Soon Is Now?" *is* good, and you doofuses knows it. I would find it refreshing to flip by MTV sometime and see a video for it. I'd bet you'd be slow to turn the channel from that too.

Anyway, I think some of you take these things way too seriously. As if you're offended that a couple of teenagers would dare cover The Smiths. (How offended can the person who submitted the item be when he can't even figure out how to spell MORRISSEY - at least tATu spelled it right!)
What is all this anger at them about?

Oh and there's also some of you who take the Bill O'Reilly stand and are offended that they're toying with sexuality or something. You realize rock 'n' roll is called rock 'n' roll becuase it's about FUCKING, right? Relax and enjoy.

  • Have you ever been approached by a foreigner in the middle of town who’s trying to read a phrase book and has no idea what they’re saying…that’s what TATU sound like. TATU goes against everything that evolution stands for as they’re so lazy that can’t be bothered writing inspiring songs that they have feelings for themselves, which is why they do endless cover versions. There’s something about TATU I don’t like and that’s the way they've used the lesbian image unnecessarily for “entertainment purposes”. Lesbians should be treated equally in society and shouldn’t be made fun of, used or made a mockery of.

There’s a lack of truth in words recorded on paper to words that you hear yourself…without a tone of voice you can’t hear emotion (although that doesn’t apply to TATU as they sound like robots), which doesn’t convince me at all that Morrissey does like the song…sarcasm can not be heard from paper. Even if Morrissey does, I and many others don't. However, everybody to their own even if it is dire...
