I went to see Johnny Marr in Berlin on Sunday the 16th of March 2003. The concert was okay so far, but I am not so keen on his new stuff... Anyway, this is what happened about half-way through the gig: suddenly lights and music went out. Electricity was off for some reason. Johnny later said "We blew a fuse, now let´s try to blow the bar up..." Ok so it was rather dark for about 5 minutes and absolutely silent. First Johnny took the harmonica and did some blues stuff. Then he took the acoustic guitar and played "Cemetry Gates". I could not believe it at first, but it sounded so familiar and it was "Cemetry Gates" indeed. He even sang a few words in the end but I could not understand them. Not the original lyrics though...

And then the impossible happened: Johnny Marr performed an acoustic version of "Bigmouth" (no singing) and the audience went hysterical at this point. He afterwards said something like "Only time I will perform it for you". Then electricity was okay again and he went on with his "Boomslang"-stuff... I really had not expected Johnny Marr to give us a Smiths instrumental and I am still very excited about it...

Guess he has enough self-distance to realize the crowd would stay calm in the darkness if he gave 'em some sugar - some smithsy sugar:) One of those experiences one usually can only dream of, especially if one, as I, was about eight when the dynamic duo split up - you're SO lucky...

Has anyone heard Johnny sing "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright"? I would love to hear his cover of that song.

I hope to god he plays those songs again on his UK jaunt next month. A hoe town crowd at the Manchester Uni deserve to hear something from the Smiths. If Moz can do it surely Johnny can?
