Steven Wells is at it again.

From The Guardian Wednesday January 15th (full article)

"And there is actually a Brazilian player by the name of Djalminha who is, apparently, an ENORMOUS Morrissey fan. Now let's think about that for a moment. This is a man who comes from the land of sunshine and samba - but who finds inspiration in the work of a cardigan-wearing, miserabalist pseudo-intellectual veggie-saddo freak who peddles a utterly depressing line in rain-swept self pity, nostalgic bitterness and kneechewingly twee irony. That you can't even dance to. Unless you're a geek. Uh, hello?"

  • Someone should really put this man (Steven Wells) out of his misery. And slowly. What a wanker.
And Djalminha has great taste! He used to be pretty great too, but where is he now? At Austria Wien I believe...

  • Is that pseudo-human excretion SWells still alive?? I thought (hoped) he died a death buried under a pile of sub-standard pub rock promos?? No...?

  • As long as I´m concerned it is indeed true that Djalminha is a big Morrissey fan and I find it rather normal, let´s avoid stereotypes ok!? just because Rio is the land of samba it doesn´t mean a person cannot like good British music, just look at myself, I was raised listening to such fantastic groups like Smiths, Clash and Echo, going to the alternative side of the city and still find time to appreciate a good samba now and then.

Good music is universal, no matter where you come from, be it rock, jazz or samba.

  • forget samba
    forget techno
the best music to dance to is the smiths or morrissey
only people who can't dance dance to techno
dancing to the smiths requires a special rhythm.

    kram
    streja
(who always dances to the smiths and morrissey)

  • I have had run ins with this muppet throughout the nineties as I have defended Morrissey by writing to the (cough! Splutter!) NME.

    Remember one thing my friends.

He only does it to wind us up!

Doesn't stop me wanting to wrap a fuckin bat round his head though!!!!

  • 'who peddles a utterly depressing line'
he thinks he is so clever yet he gets his punctuation (if thats the right word!) wrong! It should be 'AN untterly depressing line'!

  • i wish americans (and apparently british now, as well) would be taught some history/geography in school... seriously.
brazil isn't some underdeveloped african country... "samba" is what the masses like, yes -- but when you're poor and uneducated, what else do you have?
and also, they dont speak spanish in brazil.. they speak portuguese... and guess what, the majority of people there are white europeans (no, they're not "hispanic," however, there are a lot of mulattos... because brazillians weren't dumbass racists like in america)

  • I live in Spain, where Djalminha had played for several years. Once time, he ask to a TV programme "The boy with the thorn in his side" video, I knew Morrissey thanks to him. I was a huge fan of Djalma for then, he played on deportivo. He plays like Morrissey sounds. Totally magic. But the problem with him is difficult character and a bad relations with journalist (do you ring?).

  • with a lot of Steve Wells' comments about the flipping dismal and utterly joyless Radiohead and their ilk (Coldplay, Starsailors etc). Give me the cheeky girls anyday! I don't think he realises that people like me exist. A Morrissey fan who owns and loves every single Abba studio record. A Morrissey fan who bought the joyful 'Don't Stop Moving' by S Club 7. A Morrissey fan who generally hates miserable, humourless indie music.
So I agree with his general philosophy but obviously not the Morrissey stuff!
    All the best.
