PETA2 exclusive Morrissey interview, by Dan Mathews

Veggie icon Morrissey, who burst onto the scene in the '80s with The Smiths and released a string of solo albums in the '90s, is back on the road this fall with sold-out concerts in the U.S., Australia, France, and his native England. The reclusive singer, whose "Meat Is Murder" album has inspired legions of listeners to stop eating animals, was playing in El Paso the same day that PETA launched its latest "Go Veg" billboard campaign.

Morrissey hooked up with PETA's Dan Mathews to take a snapshot of the ad and reflect on his feelings about animal rights.

The billboard image is used for a sticker which first appeared in the tour merchandise for the Anaheim show, I believe.

  • It is so nice to see that SOMEONE on this planet knows how to run an interesting interview! This is one of the best Morrissey interviews I've ever seen! This PETA guy obviously has an agenda but he never once tries to give Morrissey his opinion for him, never insults Morrissey, but instead he asks fascinating questions. It is BRAVE to be a member of PETA and ask if any of their campaigns may go too far and turn people off--that question could have been embarrassing and yet he and Morrissey pulled it off honestly and beautifully.

Man an interview like this really shows how sucky the mainstream media is in comparison.

  • I think that Morrissey's point in this is article is that Vegetarians come in all shapes and sizes, but there is this perception of them as being downbeat moralizers. I think some of the comments on this board bear this out. I really think some people take their personal belief in vegetarianism to jihad-like extremes and it's a turn-off and does more harm than good. It is really that "I'm holier than though attitude," which people hate. It's like the Simpson's episode where Lisa is shamed by the guy who says he's a fifth-level vegan "he won't eat anything that casts a shadow".

Surely, if someone cannot give up animal products completely, they should be congratulated and applauded for any efforts they take to reduce their consumption?

  • I think this was a really interesting article, I enjoyed it a lot.

Still can't bring myself to give up meat, but am feeling very guilty about the little amimals (a bit like in sonic the hedgehog) being led off to slaughter.

  • I haven't given up meat either but I tend to stick to chicken and meat. I admire people who give it up on moral priciple.

  • 1. All in all, I do appreciate Morrissey's long-standing vegetarianism and his promotion of it. However, the interviewer wasn't as bold as I would expect from a member of PETA: surely he knows his stuff, so he SHOULD have asked Morrissey about the leather issue.

    2. Asparagus makes your urine and semen stinky. Yuck!

  • I was a vegetarian for 13 years until last year when I moved to Tokyo for 12 months. After 1 month there, it proved impossible to not eat meat and still enjoy my experience there. Despite being a Buddhist country, they don't really cater for vegetarians there. Anyway, am now living in Australia (I'm from the UK) but still eating meat and I'm not sure if or when I'll revert back to being a veggie.
Mind you, the 2nd day of meat eating in Japan, I was taken to a Korean Barbeque. My digestive system didn't forgive me for a week...

  • Fantastic interview, Morrissey speeches in a very eloquent and mature way. Somehow it forgives the past silly and empty interview in that talk-show.
I'm thinking seriously about becoming a veggie.

  • great interview. i always thought PETA was way too extreme and made made vegetarians look ridiculous...but what Moz said about reaching all different people made sense.

  • The interview part about his nephew was hilarious. Plus we don't hear all that much about his family. Nice to hear a little something. Funny how Moz gave his nephew a peta poster with a bikini girl on it. Just thinking about it makes me laugh. I wonder what else Mozzy talks to his nephew about or does his nephew look up to him alot, it just makes you wonder.

  • I recall an interview back in the 90's when he was asked " are those leather shoes you're wearing? " and he ironically (how weird) answered "yes, and this is a leather belt!!!", so he DID wear leather I'm sorry moz i truly love your music but you are or aren't, you cannot be half- vegetarian, leather IS murder as well.....
