"Please Help The Cause Against Loneliness" mp3 @ Ambitious-Outsiders.com
posted by davidt on Wednesday June 19 2002, @07:00AM

This is amazing, another rare, unreleased mp3 courtesy of the Ambitious-Outsiders. TonyS writes:

A Morrissey recording of the song "Please Help The Cause Against Loneliness" is available @ Ambitious-Outsiders.

The song was released by Sandie Shaw but written by Morrissey/Street, this recording is said to be taken from Viva Hate sessions.

The quality isn't great, certainly not top studio quality, my personal recollection was that Morrissey recorded this song as part of a session for the BBCs John Peel show. Maybe this is that recording.

I've listened to it about four times so far. The first few measures remind me of "Footloose". I suppose my expectations may have been too high but I was a little disappointed. I enjoyed "Striptease" much more. But I'll take this over 90% of what is on the radio anyday.

If someone could post the lyrics, that would be great.

Personally, I liked the Sandie Shaw version when it came out, and have wanted for over a decade to hear the Morrissey version. The horns on the Shaw version were indeed corny, but I could imagine Morrissey singing the "I'm so very young" chorus and imagined it would be quite good.

And so it's a pleasure to hear this. David writes that the recording isn't very good, but in fact it sounds more like a rough, unifinished mix. The vocals may indeed be nothing more than a scratch track, meant to be rerecorded at a later date. I'd guess two possibilities: 1) The song was abandoned early on in the recording process, and someone just dumped a rough mix down to 1/4" tape for the sake of posterity, or 2) The song was mixed properly, and there is a more "final" version out there.

In any case, I like it. It's charming. But it's clearly not a finished product. More than likely a final version would have a cleaner, Stephen Street-style production, along the lines of "Sister I'm a Poet." But, alas, it probably never made it that far.
