Smiths box set, remastering forthcoming?

Mozrebel writes:

Info straight from Morrissey's mouth - he said there's gonna be a new Smiths box set released in the US with all the singles remastered.

Also he said that he'll be playing in Pasadena, CA, the Civic (Sept). I asked him who he was listening to and he said Apex Theory (he really likes them)...

Well, nice if it happens, but what Morrissey says in passing to a fan isn't nearly as legit as a proper record company announcement.

But a box set of singles? That means either a Smiths version of those two EMI Moz solo replica single sets OR a compilation with every B-side (which'll only warrant 3 full CDs at a stretch).

So good news if that means "Jeane", "Wonderful Woman" and "I Keep Mine Hidden" finally get on an album, but it's still old rope at the end of the day.

Only last week we were told that there is at least one new song - so in the circumstances a singles compilation (box or otherwise) does seem a bit ludicrous, especially if there really is as the NME said, enough for a Beatles-Anthology affair. Moz and Marr should start trying to gauge what the world/fans actually WANT rather than hoisting another superfluous compilation on us.

and while the civic is badly in need of some repair and refurbishing, i doubt it's in any sort of condition where the city doesn't give a shit if it gets thrashed... i mean, it's still in use today for award ceremonies and such.

let's hope it is not a repackaging of the existing LP's and RT comps you can find at any local tower records, sam goody or any corporate record store. if it is, then aside from economic gain, what's the point? even if it is 'morrissey approved', it's not like his approval it adds any additional 'umph' to the music that a lot of smiths fans already have; it's there already, it's readily available, many of us have heard it all before, and we already love it to bits.

I began listening and collecting because, fundamentally, the music and lyrics stirred in me feelings of empathy, comfort, and identification; those desires cannot in any way be satisfied by a new arrangement of imperceptibly altered music.

In fact, such reconfigurations can only do the original damage: imagine Picasso tweaking "Guernica" every few years, or The Estate of James Joyce periodically releasing "remastered" versions of "The Dubliners." (Of course, as is shown with new versions of old movies like "E.T." and "Star Wars," and "unearthed" half-written versions of books by James Baldwin and Hemingway, this sort of thing sadly does in fact happen quite a bit.)

Morrissey famously oppossed remixes of The Smiths' music. How really different is this current deluge of "remastereds"?

I know, I'm contradicting myself, I used to critisize Chris and others for "stalking", but reality is, Moz enjoys those impromptu visits... (Or those visits may be kind of staged by his close friends, I don't care) Therefore those visitors are not stalkers in Moz eyes, but something opposite, people providing moral support. Some patterns of behaviour acceptable for a teenager are not acceptable for a grown-ups. What I mean, if some guy at late 20s would show up at Moz doorstep, his natural reaction would be: "hey old chap, get a life and look for nearest employment agency"... But maybe 17-year-olds waiting for their hero to chat with him is fine, provided that Moz enjoys those visits. Truly, if I would be Moz, I would prefer to arrange those visits with Moz Court of close friends/agent(s) in advance, and, again, I suspect that both Mozrebel and Chris did just that, which is ok with me...

What I want to know is what team does Morrissey support in the World Cup and the Premiership? He probably supports Ireland and England in the Coppo Mundo and thats fair enough, although I remember him putting on the Irish team shirt whilst singing "Roy's Keen" in Dublin in December 99.But then he was also wearing a West Ham shirt during other gigs on that tour in England.I thought he was a Man U supporter.I was happy to see him in the Hammers shirt cos i'm a West Ham supporter myself.I wonder what he thinks of the whole Roy Keane thing.Maybe he could write a song about it!The above will probably mean little to our American friends but maybe a few Paddies or Brits might comment.
