The Smiths were on Top of the Pops Two today, with Sandie Shaw, performing "Hand In Glove" from 1984. The presenter Steve Wright (that fearsome oik, who always hated the Smiths, and consequently was the dj that the song "Panic" was aimed at) said in tribute to his birthday this week they were showing this and tomorrow (Wednesday) Top of the Pops will show a Morrissey performance, which is nice. It's strange that Steve Wright hated the Smiths in the days when he was a radio 1 dj but now he's cosying up to them. They get referred to quite a lot on Top of the Pops.

Fantastic! Being 22 years old, I never heard the Sandie Shaw version of "Hand in Glove", so I taped the performance, and what a great one it was. I wonder who thought of Marr, Rourke and Joyce playing on bare feet...?

I was going to watch it, but I decided it was a forlorn hope. But alas, it shall not be, if there's going to be a Morrissey performance tonight. We live in hope! Still, I'm bloody disappointed. I wanted to see a TOTP Hand In Glove, even better if it's with Sandie Shaw :-(

Steve wright used to hate the Smiths, but sometime around 1988 he changed his opinion. He was very vocal in championing Suedehead at the time, and has often made very positive comments about Morrissey on TOTP2. He has also often claimed that he would love to have Morrissey as a guest on his radio show. He claims it was his radio 'posse' of around 1988 (especially Richard Easter) who showed him how to appreciate what Morrissey was all about.
Radio 2 has been playing a lot of Smiths lately, Stuart Maconie and Johnathon Ross play them quite regularly, and even Ken Bruce has played Heaven Knows... and The Headmaster Ritual recently.

Easy Tiger, It's all very easy to anonymously call people fascists, but at least have the decency to back up yor argument. Wright didn't start supporting the Smiths after they 'got popular', it was well after they had spilt up that he admitted he had been pointed in the right direction by his new radio posse, who were a lot younger than he was. Also, what money train are you on about? Wright was the highest paid DJ at Radio 1, and even now is very highly paid. Do you really think he thought by supprting a band who had split up that he would earn extra cash?

Dont get me wrong, I used to hate Steve Wright, I lothed and despised him, even sending a letter of disgust to him when Bigmouth failed to make the Top 20, accusing him of being soley responsible. He(or at least his office) sent me a polite reply saying that, at the end of the day, it was only HIS opinion, and did I really think that ONE dj could stop a record getting into the charts?

Steve Wright changed his opinions on Morrissey, and I in turn changed my opinion on Wright. According to you, people arent allowed to change their opinions, now THAT is fascism in my book.

If you want to carry this debate on in a dignified manner dont hesitate to get in touch.

          Cheers.
