the number 22 has always been ironically special to me. it was my jersey number in high school through college. my first heartbreak which prompted me to listen to your music occured on the 22nd. i placed my whole bet on number 22 playing roulette in vegas and won. today is the day my beautiful nephew was born 5 years ago. and of course it's the blessed day in which you were delivered onto us.

Dear Morrissey,
From where I was standing, probably five or six people back with my arms on the shoulders of my friend in front of me, something truly extraordinary had happened. It had been a wonderful show with high energy and high spirits and a truly surprising setlist. I think I felt for the first time that our love for you was recipricated; you were rewarding your fans with a setlist of rarities and odds and ends, Smiths songs, b-sides, something for everyone.
But the last song is where it all overflowed. It started off with a drum fill too grand to be serious but too solemn to be anything but. When the music kicked in there was a momentary pause of confusion from the audience before you opened your mouth and sang the words. “Last night I dreamt...” And that was the end; the crowd went berserk. Two people on either side of me screamed like I’ve never heard anyone scream. A young lady on my left burst into tears and cried “NO, Morrissey! NO!” A surge carried us five or ten feet in one direction and then the other. It was all I could do to stay standing. The song went on, and remarkably, the emotion didn’t decrease; rather, people became more frantic, the outpouring of emotion even more raw, the screams louder. I was laughing verging on crying from the scene. It was as if, after years of listening to this song with a full heart, just barely unable to give in and break down, the audience was releasing every pent up emotion, all the heartbreak we never express, in one awful moment.
And then it all broke down. It seemed the audience said, “No, you will NOT toy with our emotions this way. Our collective adolescence (however long ago by now) will NOT be summarized and trivialized by making it just another song in a set,” and it, we, proceeded to assert ourselves. You stumbled offstage wearing three or four audience members like tattered clothes. One down, four to go. In your absence we turned on the band. We wouldn’t let them finish the song. I remember someone actually going up to Boz and putting his hands over the strings of his guitar to silence them. It was beautiful. The band stormed offstage, obviously really angry at what had just happened. Some guitarist or other stomped back on to berate us. We laughed at him. He obviously had no idea what had just happened and maybe you didn’t either, which is why I’m writing to tell you. They’re songs, maybe even children to you, but they’re so much more to us. They are our history, summarizing our entire lives, all our failures and triumphs (mostly failures), the wistfull moments and the darkest. And most cruelly, they summarize all these emotions much more clearly and succinctly than we ever could ourselves- THAT’S the most painful part. For that reason, we needed to assert ourselves in that moment, to momentarily claim these songs as our own, and show you the faces in the faceless crowd, the bitterness and pain hidden in our admiration of you.
Happy birthday, Morrissey. We love you more than you’ll ever know.
