Björk comparisons in the press

Morrissey is mentioned twice in a review of Björk's latest in New York Magazine.

See the full article at Ladies Sing the Blues - by Ethan Brown. Excerpt:
Like Yoko Ono or Morrissey, Björk makes it all but impossible to be dispassionate about her music. Whether embracing exuberant dance beats on Debut or playing with movie-musical conventions on the soundtrack to Dancer in the Dark, she demands nothing less than total engagement, with a voice as unmistakably distinctive as Morrissey's and an aesthetic as abstract as Ono's. Björk weaves a cocoon that holds at bay an adult world that constantly challenges the capacity for awe that in her world is the highest of values.

In the Wednesday August 29, 2001 Irish Times there is an article by Brian Boyd on Björk (he interviews her at the French Communist Party HQs!). There is a "Björk Beginner's Guide" in that article where he writes, "Musical Youth: Like Morrissey before her, she was a big fan of Sparks. "My mother and stepfather hated them, so I really loved them and I played their records just to annoy them."

It's great to see that somebody acknowledges the authenticity and originality of such gorgeous voices - that of Bjork and Morrissey, of course. In an environment of wanna-be Eddie Vedders and college radio bands such as 311/Blink 187/Papa Roach (whose voices can hardly be told apart on tracks other than their hit singles), it is great to have such comforting and recognizable voices on our airwaves, even if they come alonge once in a blue moon. I'm also a sucker for a good SADE track.

She is the most original and hands down the most creative female in music. She proves she can trancend all musical genres! Thats what makes paying $275.00 for a ticket to her upcoming show a necessity! I almost paid $300 to see moz at the greek and lo and behold, some jackals got onstage and moz ran of mid-song.....whew was i glad i didnt waste my money! besides you have to fight for your life at moz shows nowadays...and hopefully you wont get stabbed afterwards. Other difference : I'm sure Bjork's parents aren't ashamed of her ...

My recollection of this is bound to be sketchy at best but I remember picking up and leafing through a Bjork biography and seeing the handwritten lyrics to "army of me"? the first track on "Post"? Anyway the original lines to the song had a verse that said something like "you will be as miserable as Morrissey"...Anybody else see this?

I saw this at Passions Just Like Mine under "Parodies & tributes" (http://tmregistry.com/passion/covers.htm):

          "Army Of Me" - Bjork

In her "Post" book, she writes: " 'Army Of Me' is about Morrissey, or anyone who feels they can't cope." The song originally included a line mentioning Morrissey, something like "stop acting like Morrissey". It could be a coincidence, but in the video for the song, a timebomb with the word "Smith" on it bring her and her friend/lover together.

I remember bjork slagging off (charming phrase that!) morrissey a few years ago with all the tiresome predictable stuff about being miserable etc. that's the kind of comment that you hear from people that simply don't 'get' moz/the smiths. people that don't understand his fantastic self-expression, powers of observation, his way with words and both the sadness AND joy in so many of the songs.

I thought Bjork would've had the intelligence to appreciate morrissey and not to make the usual lazy, predictable comments but alas no.
