False record label rumor (originating from KROQ?)
posted by davidt on Tuesday July 31 2001, @08:00AM

Several people have sent me this rumor that's been spreading but I just got word that is is false. Mozluv writes:

Just to let you all know the latest news on Morrissey. It was announced July 25 on the Flashback Lunch on KROQ (Los Angeles radio station), that Morrissey finally got a contract with an undisclosed record label, and a upcoming album will be released in the near future with up to 12 new tracks... I didnt hear it myself, a couple of my friends who had heard it on the radio told me. I called KROQ myself and confirmed it. Then they told me to keep listening to further updates later on in the week and to keep checking out their website.

"The number of KROQ artists that have Top 40 albums right now is relatively high. Plus, we continue to play adventurous bands that we have to ourselves, like Korn. So we're playing a bunch of hot stuff that's sweeping the country and cool stuff that nobody else is playing. That's the ideal combination for a 'new music' station like us."

Looking back now, the red flag was "undisclosed" record label. If Moz had gotten a new record label, it would be pretty big news in the music world and I'm sure the label that nabbed him would be pretty proud. I have to wonder why KROQ felt the need to start a rumor like that, especially at a time when they knew a lot of people would be listening. I doubt it was a ploy just to get more listeners since they probably don't play Moz anyway. I'd figure they'd check their facts before announcing something like that, but I guess I overestimate them. :(

Surely he has recordings or at least demos and given his popularity in the USA, this would sell reasonably well and make some profits for any of the major labels. Even in here in the UK where the reverence for Moz is not so hysterical, it would sell well for a few weeks. Especially considering Moz does not need a huge advertising campaign, rather relying on unquestioning devotion.

Don't get me wrong, I would buy a new Moz CD the day it came out - if it was in the league of any Smith material, or Vauxhall & I, I would play it often; if it was in the league of Kill Uncle of Maladjusted maybe less. BUT I am not going to get excited by rumour and gossip. Until the disc is in my hand I will continue to concentrate on bands and acts who actually bother to put music out (like the marvellous Strokes or the Avalanches or Badly Drawn Boy), not wait for a (old and fallen) hero to actually finish protracted procrastination!!!
