Mojo magazine (Apr.) - Smiths on cover + Morrissey interview

TheSlider writes:

This month's Mojo magazine has an exclusive article about The Smiths during The Queen Is Dead period. It includes interviews with Johnny Marr and Andy Rourke and is at least 13 pages long. Also in this amazing edition are 6 pages on Morrissey during his tour in the U.S in 1992, some very nice pictures which haven't been shown before and then finally a four page interview with the man himself, in which he mentions nearly signing to Ark 21 records and the possibility that he may recruit Moby to produce his next opus.

Out now, with 23 pages devoted to The Smiths and Morrissey, it's a must!

---
Note: I believe the interview here is similar to the one that appeared in Soma Magazine ("Nine Perfect Minutes With Morrissey" by Jaan Uhelszki) a few months ago. From what I hear, Morrissey was not aware that the phone call would turn out to be an interview, its original intent was to get some quotes about Snake River Conspiracy for Rolling Stone. So, those of you who doubted the Soma interview ever took place may be partially correct.

Ok, as I sit here and have to wait nearly a month before mojo is released state side, and in the interim, having to deal with the misinformation about the article that will come from half of you until the meantime, I was wondering why on Earth did they do an article about the Smiths, and then a 6 page thing on Moz's 1992 tour? Wouldn't it make more sense to do his post-smiths tour? Or are they trudging up finsbury park again?

speaking of Blowme, oops, Moby, I still wonder how that would work. I mean, yes, Moby is unlike the rest of the electronic types in that he will actually take someone of average vocal abilities like Gwen Stefani and do something fitting and interesting with them, unlike 99% of the rest of those artists that stick someone with Enya-ish pipes on their records because they are that uncreative, but I can't think of how this would work musically.

Moby uses so little guitar that Moz's regulars would be standing around with not much to do. Moby's lyrical style is so sparse and overlaid to the point where you can't really understand what they are singing, which leaves you basically with Moby's production and Boz and Alain's compositions and I can't imagine too many people who were running out to buy a Morrissey album would be too thrilled to get home, put it on their CD player and hear Moz endlessly repeating an "ooh ah yeah!" indecipherable duet with Gwen in an endless loop over Smiths-meets-glam rockabilly songs with funny little electronic squeals and rap beats bulking up the rest of the album.

Mojo also have a separate news item about Morrissey seeking a deal.

It's easy to be cynical about the British music passing off old stories as news (this interview seems to have been carried out last year, and last month's piece in Q was old news rehashed) but, in doing so, they are raising Morrissey's profile in the industry, which will surely help him to get a deal sooner or later.

He must accept though that that the money won't be as good as previous contracts due to the poor performance of last 2 albums, but if he has written some half-decent songs, he could easily change all that, given the appalling state of the current UK music scene.
