I myself have heard about the organizer/promoter of this event I heard he is a backwards english guy who is unfair, this is not my opinion, I've never meet the man before, but I know someone who has dealt with him in th past and he does rip people off, he always wants his way.

Anyway, I went for the first time last year and I thought it was ok, my girlfriend has been to them since '97 and she says that each year it gets less interesting. The best, she says, was the
    Pasadena '97 convention.

It's not even like a Star Trek convention. Sure, a few of the few expendable crew members won't be putting on mock phaser battles as the highlight, but I find the concept of it as more logical in the scheme of things than paying $30 to stand around and watch videos of drooling fans give their firsthand accounts of how Hand in Glove changed their life.

      CON-vention (Score:2, Interesting)
Morrissey/Smiths convention, Madonna convention, Cure convention and Depeche Mode convention all run by the same two money grubbing characters. They make up mugs and T-shirts for less than a fourth of what they sell them to YOU(convention goer)for. Beside that you are asked to pay a cover charge for two days. Now if you want to save yourself $30 and go shopping at the shops listed above along with the many others that actually have quite a large Smiths/Morrissey selection, you probably should.

As far as "true fans" someone above mentioned-get over it. I am not saying that those who go to this thing is more/less of a fan than the rest of the people. It is a basic difference of opinion-those not going might see it as a money making scheme by exploitation of Morrissey's art(Counterfeit T's, tacky keychains, bootleg CD's, bad mugs and videos). Those going probably are looking for something they have yet to be able to find(poster, LP, CD or video), hang out with friends, etc.

I am very familiar with the set-up and those running the thing, they are both shifty and do not trust one another. But then knowing these two, neither do I. If you go, have fun. If you don't go, you know you probably aren't missing anything worthwhile.

      Cheers!

i don't know anything about the conventions, simply because i've never been to one. so i can't talk smack about the conventions. i do know that i really wanted to go the the '97 one - the only one i thought was worth an admissions fee.

what i do want to talk about is the whole "true fans" thing, which is as wrong as things like 'hot topic'.

people just need to stop quantifying one's following of the smiths. you do not need to go to every smiths related venue or to every show on the oye esteban tour or wear smiths shirts and quiffed hair all day just to be considered a smiths fan.

i own all the smiths lps, but i was a smiths fan before i got my first official lp. i've been to one morrissey concert in my life, but i was into his music for a long time prior the announcement that such a tour was going to happen.

fact is, 'real fans' are fans that dig moz because they really like his music and performances, or think he's a brilliant artist. and if they go to moz-related events or decide to do something out of the question such as wait outside his house like a stalker, well, that's what they do. but it doesn't make them more of a fan if they do such things, or less of a fan if they abstain.

'real fans' are people who got hooked into morrissey's music and showmanship. they do not have to like every song and every album, they do not have to own every lp and numerous t-shirts. 'real fans' are those who really dig morrissey as an artist and as a performer and have a great affinity and/or admiration for his music.

            everything else is secondary.

anyhow, i'll continue to consider myself a 'true fan' - whether or not i decide to go.

(plus that'll only cost you $1.00!!) funny how the majority of the mess that shows up to the conventions are never to be seen at a travis show, a coldplay show, a oasis gig....or anything for that matter, but who do you think is first in line at the florentine gardens on a saturday night? a tucanes show maybe? c'mon kids. dont waste your money, time, breathe, energy....anything. morrissey doesnt get any closer to you if you go. why dont you just leave your 30 dollars at the promoters door and grab a key chain on your way out....which, by the way, will be the 1997 convention ones.

              Or:
              2) Don't go! It's a waste of 30 bucks. There are too many posers there. It will disappoint you.
Well, I need help! I am from New Orleans(far far away from anything California), and by a chance of fate, someone offered me a trip to LA on that very weekend! I definitely have 30 dollars to spare. I wanted to go to the convention until I began reading so many negative things. And I've never been to a convention before, so I can't have a well-thought-over opinion. Therefore, I'm leaving it up to fate again. Whoever you are reading this, e-mail me please at Viva Melancholy@aol.com, and tell me to either go or not to go. Please give your most honest opinion and/or experiences. Whichever suggestions from you guys I get the most of, that's what I'll do. I have to know ASAP so I can order tickets if I'm going. I'll have my decision made by April 16th, depending on the e-mails I get. I realize it's silly to leave a big decision up to people I don't even know, but I'm really torn. Thanks ever so much!!! I'll post my decision when it's made. Au Revoir!
