Coldplay's Chris Martin on Morrissey, band vs. solo

The comment is small, but it's part of quite an interesting article I found in the Brit Awards site about why work within a band makes for better results.

The bit: "...And emphasising the four heads are better than one theory, Martin adds; "People like Richard Ashcroft and Morrissey are brilliant but when there's a band there's a little bit of spark there; a bit of tension maybe that makes it work."

    (1) One cannot really "hate" Coldplay. How about hating something genuine, like Kid Rock, Limp Bizkit, Britney Spears? But, Coldplay? Either you haven't given them a real chance or you don't know how to pick your battles correctly...

and (2) Back to the real subject, how is some off-hand remark from Chris Martin(that's not even really about Morrissey) turn into something "news-worthy"?? What's next - a news article with the letters M, O, R, R, I, S, S, E, Y strewn about (not in succession and each located in different words) within the same sentence the next "headline"? It's so pathetic.

I think that you are being rather harsh about the news-worthyness (umm... I'm not sure that's a word) of the article. I don't like Coldplay, but its interesting to know that the band have clearly listened to solo-Morrissey stuff, and perhaps that has fed into their music. That in turn may give people on this site incentive to give their music a chance, and find that they really like it. Besides, with the continuing absence of any fresh Moz, perhaps its all the more important to find other things to listen to (I personally recomend Elvis Costello and Steely Dan, but hey! I've never been remotely cool or fashonable...)

I know its not a battle, and Chris Martin didn't mean any harm I am sure in his comments.. Indeed, his point about being in aband being more creative than being on your own may stand some test.. After all, was Morrissey so effortlessly fertile when with Marr? Hmmmm.. don't get me wrong I love Morrissey solo as well, but I'd argue it all came so naturally in the Smiths...

However, compare Coldplay Live to Morrissey (or the Smiths live) and quite frankly, if it was boxing, that battle would be stopped in the 1st round.. Coldplay have very little movement or passion live, (boring at Shepherds Bush was the word used) and well, we all know and love the way Morrissey shakes his ass like no other! The champion microphone lead flicker in the world? Of course!

Anyone going to the Venue to see 'These Charming Men' tomorrow..? I am taking 6 unbelievers with me!! Help!

I think their album was quite good. 7.5 or 8/10, probably, which is a fairly solid debut effort. They show promise.
Having said that, they really don't betray any Smiths/Morrissey influences... And I can kind of understand how some people think them boring.

I do like the fact, however, that this storm of bland, uninteresting bands flooding the British music scene ( Coldplay, Toploader etc) are namechecking The Smiths and Moz in the same way Oasis did when anyone would listen to them. Maybe there is a glimmer of hope that these young pups who pretend to understand the nonsensical outpourings of Chris Martin might search out the genuine article.

              1. I don't know who or what "Coldplay" is.

              2. Morrissey has three periods - The Smiths, then
              VivaHate/KillUncle/BonaDrag, then Your Arsenal
thru Maladjusted/Rare Tracks EP. It is only in the
middle period where he lacked a band and relied on
session musicians. Starting from Arsenal, he has been in a band, he just hasn't given them a name.
Although, granted, w/ the Smiths he was a co-leader with Marr. Nevertheless, beginning with
the Kill Uncle _tour_, Morrissey has been in a band. And in _live_performance_ at least, they are actually a bit cooler than The Smiths IMO.

              3. It's intersting that you contrast three Smiths tracks widely considered among his best w/ "Ouija Board," widely considered subpar. Your case wouldn't be so easily made if you had compared best with best, mediocre with mediocre, and worst with worst. I'm pretty sure I could match every great Smiths song one lists with a great post-Smiths song. Although I will concede it is easier to find subpar songs in the post-Smiths years. And that's the real difference. Same songwriter, same brilliance, just as many great songs, but The Smiths were more consistantly great and the albums a bit stronger from top to bottom.
But there really is not a huge gulf between Morrissey back then and now. His last release,
"Rare Tracks," containing the "Maladjusted" B-sides, is as good as anything the Smiths did, except that Morrissey doesn't feel quite as fresh and new anymore.
