Meeting Morrissey in Manchester

Dear Morrissey Solo,

I can't believe it, but I actually the Maestro, in the town of his birth on December 11. I was Christmas shopping in Deansgate (a nice part of Manchester city centre), when I brushed past a tall, expensively dressed man, chin jutting and possessing immaculately groomed side burns. I thought in that it instant it was Moz, or else a very good lookalike...it couldn't be him, surely not in Manchester, this would be too good to be true...unless he was visiting his folks for Christmas. I saw him go into David Lloyd Home Furnishings store, so I ran into a newsagents to buy a biro (always be prepared is now my watchword), and then casually loitered amongst the scatter cushions and shelving units. I saw him making his purchases and chatting to the sales staff and then he left, back into the crowded streets.

'Now or never', thinks I, so I dash after him and manage to burble 'Excuse me, are you Morrissey?'

It his him!! He turns round with a rueful shrug, 'Yes, Yes I'm afraid I am.' I could not believe it, I mean I have seen him on stage and reasonably close too at the stage door, but never like this. He is really tall; I'm 6' and yet he had to stoop to speak to me. He was wearing a Gucci raincoat and Gucci zip neck sweater, bell bottom jeans and a Kangol flat cap. He looked absolutely fantastic, almost like a '40's Hollywood star, so groomed and fastidious...he even smelt like a star! After being a fan for 16 years, I hoped I would have found something profound to say, but it rarely works that way. I told him he was the greatest performer I had ever seen, and how him and his music had saved my life. He seemed very bashful, but looked taken aback (and hopefully touched!) and thanked me for my kind words. He then asked me if I was from Manchester. I told him I'd moved up 12 years ago, because I was such a Smiths fan to which he rolled his eyes in horror and said 'How dreadful!' (it was torrential rain at the time). I had to agree, laughing and saying that in retrospect it was a daft thing to do...perhaps moving to LA would be more appropriate.

I asked him if he was visiting his folks and he grimaced (ever the dutiful son), and moaned about Christmas shopping. I told him how wonderful last year's tour was and how great it was to meet Alain and Boz...could we expect another tour. He shook his head and explained his current situation with record companies, in that he seems to be persona non grata. 'All they want these days are bubbly 17 year old Broccoli Spears clones'. I couldn't believe that someone I had revered for so long was cheerfully explaining the plight of his record company dealings with me, and so frankly. By way of sympathising, I mentioned that the Pet Shop Boys recent visit to the Nynex arena had barely sold 2/3's of their ticket allocations, which seemed a shame for a band who at least tried to be different. I added that it was about time the British record buying public grew up, and that Moz wouldn't become a Leonard Cohen-esque recluse only releasing one album every 10 years. He laughed at this, and I then asked for an autograph, to which he signed my bank statement ('a bit scratchy I'm afraid' not that I could care, I was on Cloud 9). He was really pleased that I enjoyed the tour and thanked me for coming. I thought it only right that he be left alone, so I made to leave saying that he was a truly wonderful person and the greatest of singers. Again, a bashful smile as he shook my hand 'thank you so much, thank you'...I wished him a happy Christmas and love to his family, he wished me good luck and off he went.

Meeting your heroes can be disappointing, and they can have feet of clay. Moz? Never!!! He was as polite, charming, articulate, handsome and funny as I always knew he would be. In retrospect, I wished I had asked him about his Porsches, or just how great Sunny was or a 100 other questions, but I can't complain. I can truthfully say that meeting Morrissey was one of the nicest moments of my life.

Have a great Christmas,

Jon Farmer,
Manchester, UK

It is lovely to hear that you ran into Morrissey the way that you did!

I too have had the pleasure of meeting him more than my fair share of times, and each of the times that we spoke to each other has always been warm and friendly. One thing that I have come to learn about Moz is that he likes to be treated as an ordinary person, don't get me wrong he likes attention, but he would much rather talk about anything besides The Smiths and "Morrissey".

I recall the first time I met him.. he told me that I smelled good! I will always remember that!!

He is a great and kind man, full of wit and talent. I will adore him to till the end of time.

So, stories like this one should be considered not because they are real or not, but as a part of Morrisey's cult. That's what I really think: more art and less objective views, even because they simply cannot be produced in ordinary circumstances. And I'll leave my suggestion again: why not a section on fans' poetry, on their thoughts and so on? That would be something!

I know from many of them who have met Moz, it does feel somehow significant. Should you ever get the chance to speak to him, you realize just how special he is. Moz is larger than life, a genuine star from the old school like Stanley Baker, or James Dean and if it makes him larger (and possibly taller) than life, then so be it.

I am not in the habit of making up fairy tales; if I were, I would choose someone a little more bankable like Lord Lucan. However, if I am blessed with a future meeting, I shall have the foresight to bring with me a number of independant witnesses armed with tape measures. In the meanwhile, I will cheerfully provide any detractor with a photostat of Moz's autograph.

Morrissey is absolutely perfect from what I have read from his interviews and seen from his photos. Also, whether or not the story is true, it is quite charming.
