Post-signing report; no news of record label yet
posted by davidt on Friday October 27 2000, @09:15AM

After the two in-store DVD signings in Los Angeles and New York, it sounds like it might be a little quiet around here for a while. I got a chance to briefly ask Morrissey about the current record label situation and basically it's the same, nothing has been signed at the moment, so there will be no new releases for a while. Apparently labels are surprised he's not signed, and there have been meetings that have gone well and even a few offers but for some reason or another terms were not agreed upon. I don't really understand it at all.

Regarding the in-stores themselves, both went very smoothly and Morrissey did meet everyone who had a wristband. In Los Angeles the initial group of security left after about an hour into the signing because they were fed up with Morrissey not following the stated rules. They apparently 'lost it' when someone pulled out a sock monkey from their jacket to get signed. (Update Oct. 28 - "Sock Patrick Monkissey aka Soz", image from Candy Girl). Both in Los Angeles and New York, security said they had never seen reactions and emotions like this at a signing ever before.

Music of Morrissey's choice was played during the signings. Included were: "Skin Storm" by Bradford, "Speak To Me Someone" by Gene, and two by Nico, "Innocent and Vain" and "Somewhere There's A Feather". Does anyone recall the other songs?

From what was said, the whole camera deal, and only signing the DVD were rules of Virgin Mega Store, not MOZ. Good for those who got to get their stuff in! I guess the saying is true... Rules were made to be broken.

I was greatly disturbed that when it came to signing my jacket once security yelled that my turn was over, Moz said he'd do it if they'd let him... at the time I was thinking "he could do it if he wanted to" but now, after reading abt the monkey and security walking off, I feel better... no wonder he didn't just invite me behing the table and sign the back of my jacket... he was afraid to piss the remaining goons off!!! YEAH, now I can have happy memories and realize that I did NOT piss him off (let's hope)....

I think it's stupid for Moz to even be looking for a recording deal. He should take example from indie geroes like the Super Fury Animals (superb Welsh group who had several top 20's in the UK chart) who's lost their recording deal after Creation records been closed. They had several offerings from major record labels such as Sony and EMI, but they've decided to estanlish their own record label.
Since they've done it, they've released an obscure album in Welsh(!), but it didn't stop them from getting disterbution contracts in most of the countries.
I think that Moz should think the same, start his own label, and it also will give him the opportunity to sign some other talnted artust (well... I've heard that Gene are looking for a deal too).
