Morrissey visits The Beautiful South concert in NYC

The night after his NYC signing, Morrissey was spotted at The Beautiful South's concert at Roseland Ballroom in Manhattan. Reportedly, he was staying at the same hotel as the band and had never seen them live before. He was also reportedly at the after gig event. A slightly tight TBS fan let him know his dislike of Moz's cover of the Jam's "That's Entertainment," to which Moz reportedly answered: "I'm sorry, it was crap wasn't it?" He also (jokingly) replied that he had retired when asked when he was to begin recording. When I hear more bits of the conversations, I'll update this.

For those of you unfamiliar with The Beautiful South, it contains members of The Housemartins (Fatboy Slim was another member of the Housemartins) who were considered similar (generally) to the Smiths in their day, though the similarity is quite a stretch. The Beautiful South also tried to include the line "Skinhead in a coma, I know it's serious" at the end of one of their songs before permission was denied.

I am on a fan list for The Beautiful South, and a few members that attended their NY show on the 21st made comment that Moz was seen at the show. It is a little suprising considering that Moz has bad mouthed TBS in the past, but from all accounts, he seemed to enjoy the show.

just a FYI.....p

Thanks for whomever posted this. I'm a huge Housemartins fan and was wondering what Fatboy Slim's real name is. The Housemartins were/are my second favorite band after the Smiths. Any good Beautiful South CDs I should check out?

What was Morrissey thinking? How bland can the man get? All I can imagine him doing now is working in an insurance office, going home to watch the BBC news, having a read of the Daily Mail and then popping off to sleep at 8:30 (after his cup of tea) in his magnolia painted bedroom, complete with one chest of drawers for his socks, and snuggling under his muslin bedsheets. With his wife and two children in his boring humdrum sexless marriage.

      You heard it here first.

I was at the Beautiful South's show in Philadelphia the night previous. For a lark, I imagined aproaching P. D. Heaton (the lead singer) and asking him to sign a Morrissey CD or somesuch. In my fantasy, I ended up getting swacked by Heaton's burly, yet likely inebriated, fist.

As I understand the band's Official Position on Morrissey, no love's lost. In several interviews, several years ago, Heaton et al stated that Morrissey's supposed racism rankled the socialist, populist (yet, please note, fairly misogynistic) band members. In fact, one of the Beautiful South remarked that he'd like "a piece of Morrissey" or somesuch.

One wonders if Morrissey braved backstage after the show.

when i met morrissey on friday in nyc i asked him to go to TBS with me! i knew he wouldn't say yes, i just asked for the heck of it. but his answer was "i don't like the beautiful south." i then asked if he liked the housemartins and he said "no." well, i guess technically he didn't lie to me. he could still not like TBS and attend one of their concerts, i suppose. but i still feel stood-up.

... made moz visit a TBS show? As a huge fan of both, this is a surprise - the only thing more shocking would be to see Paul at a Moz show... not only were the housemartins and smiths "rivals" but so too are paul and moz these days... paul was perturbed by moz's flirtation with the racism/skinhead thing, and so the fightin' words flew...

In their heyday, the Housemartins were affectionately know as "The Happy Smiths." Moreover, the Beautiful South is tops, and Paul Heaton is brilliant! I once gave him a San Diego Padre hat (he said it was his fav baseball team) and he wore on the Dennis Miller Show. P.D's a good bloke, indeed.

Morrissey, he's singing well, he's a good dancer, he's had a pretty fullfilling career. So you know what you tell him when he comes by here? You pat him on the back and tell them not to serve brocolli, or cauliflower, or whatever the hell those vegetarians eat!
