Guess the date of Morrissey's next release
posted by davidt on Friday August 04 2000, @08:30AM

Can you guess the date of Morrissey's next original release? The last release was the "Satan Rejected My Soul" single around December 1997.

The growing frustration of just about everyone who visits the site is fairly evident in all the various discussion areas. I don't claim to know anything apart from what's been said in interviews, but the holdup seems to be purely business related - not being able to agree to terms on a recording contract. I haven't heard of the situation changing, so it could be a while. Suggestions for what to do in the meantime are welcome also.

P.S. My guess is March 5, 2001.

As for suggestions for other activities to participate in while we're anxiously waiting, how 'bout "What's Your Favorite Morrissey Song?"

Though we keep hearing it's a record company thing, it does seem like there may be other reasons for the lack of a new album. Like the lack of any evidence of any new songs. You'd think that if Moz had any new songs he was proud of, he'd've played at least one on the recent tour. Everyone has a creative block at one time or another - maybe this is just Moz's turn. After all, it's not something he'd want to admit to (far too embarrasing for an artist). I think we'll be lucky to see a new CD before 2002.

I think the long delay has to do with record company difficultes for the following reasons.

1). He has written new songs in the past, but not performed them live until after they were recorded. When Morrissey toured the UK in February 1995, he told a French journalist something along the lines of, "We've recorded demos for the next album in the south of France. They're very loud and aggressive." Southpaw Grammer was recorded during March & April of '95, but none of those songs were played on the Feb. tour. (A comparable -- but slightly different -- situation w/ Sunny: it was recorded during the same session as Boxers, but wasn't performed in concert 'til it was about to be released in late '95.) The "no new material = writer's block"-theory springs a leak.

2.) Given that he seems to be a very particular guy, it would make sense that he's taking his time to get just the deal he wants.

What'll happen? Ask Rob Brezny, maybe he knows...

If you have the following factors
          1. A primadonnaish artist
          2. who has suffered from a lack of proper legal advice in the past
          3. and who is a prevaricator

you can be pretty sure that it is going to take an age for the deal to get done.

I can imagine the scene - it will have generated a mound of paperwork, and that's about it. . .

One thing I like about Morrissey is that his career has been, to my mind, thoroughly unpredictable. I was quite surprised to hear last summer that, after a long silence, he'd be touring. I caught a few shows on the last tour & loved 'em -- thought they were extraordinary. I have since gotten my hands on a few bootlegs from "Oye Esteban." Love those as well.

I have no idea when a new album will emerge. We can all sit around and make sweeping declarations about the future, but I don't think anyone really knows what'll happen. I do think Moz will record in the future, but I don't say that with any grand conviction. It's just a feeling. In the meantime I have plenty of Morrissey's work to hold me over.

It takes a LONG time to put together the kind of ongoing Vegas act he's putting together.

First, he tried out the "Comeback" leathers and ELVIS type backdrop on the last tour (and we replied that we loved it). Now, he's packing on the flesh, had the leathers whitened (and added a few sequens). There will be back-up singers, REAL costume changes, fireworks, guest duets, you name it. Maybe even a Cirque du Soliel performer here and there.

You'll see. Vegas will forget all about the "other" performer (who blew it) when they see the real thing, on stage, for decades to come. And this one won't blow it. This one'll be there until were ALL good and dead.

With the way in which he carried himself on the last tour, displaying total comfort and confidence on stage, most evident in his much more frequent talking between songs, of course not to say any of which could be found lacking in his singing, it is clear this man hardly feels any pressure for not having a record deal at the moment. He has also stated that turning forty was a significant epoch in his life as well as living in the climate of Los Angelas. Maybe he feels contented with life at the moment(it is possible you know.) We as his fans should trust that he knows what is in his best intrest and after all the beauty he has already given its not much to ask if we were patient ourselves. He is a person no doubt who has endured a world of stresses as young man in the Smiths, their breakup, making it as a solo artist, lawsuits...the list goes on...and still manages to keep perhaps the most rabid and dilligent following of fans the world over, because, he is that good. Morrissey, in my opinion will undoubtably produce more records, you can still see the fire in his live performance. He is just biding his time and picking his moment. My guess for the next release:June 30, 2001.

He, like the Angellic Upstarts, will just put out a record and to Hell with the consequences. "Lost" was shimmering and beautiful, "Now I am a Was" plaintive and self-mocking, and "This is not your Country" magnificent and touching. Morrissey is at his peak and he's coming to a window near you as a rather keen window cleaner. Wait but don't drag your time - it's time like anyother and the more you use it, the better placed you will be to understand his next album.

The "uplifting" nature of his life in L.A. has influenced this change. Songs about love and hope for more peace and unity in the world will be quite salient in this upcoming album. Like Anthony Hopkins, Morrissey has gotten back his life by living in America, where he can truly embrace his own individuality and creativity without feeling maligned or misrepresented as is often the case in England.
