Morrissey's response to the fake "El Legendario" interview
posted by davidt on Tuesday July 11 2000, @08:45AM

Those initially skeptical of the supposed interview have their suspicions validated. Morrissey was alerted to the recent "El Legendario" article (translated) and here is his response:
For the record, I wasn’t interviewed by anybody at all whilst in Mexico City. And the very idea that I would conduct an interview in a disco straight after doing a concert is ..... imaginative! None of the responses in the Q&A section would be mine; I haven’t written a novel, I would not refer to African American people as ‘blacks’, Carole Lombard did not kill herself, I certainly DO have new songs, and I DON’T listen to either Oasis or Prefab Sprout! So, as I hope people will realize, this interview was either completely made up, or took place with a Mexican look-alike. However, the live review is touching, and I’m grateful for that.

What do you think of Oasis?
I've always liked them. I think they're very amusing and very Mancunian and the best Manchester group since... (shrugs smilingly). But I do wish the singer wasn't so put out. "Do I really have to sing this next verse?" He could always go back to being a painter and decorator in Burnage. I read a comment supposedly by me in Club International where I called them boring electricians, words which have never left my lips. So they've slagged me off, of course, they have to, but I like them. Noel's very funny. Very runt of the litter. You can tell that he'd run off with the fillings in his grandmother's teeth but that doesn't mean he doesn't love her.

So we know he at least liked Oasis at some point. Sorry.

For those who like a good laugh: here's a review of their performance at Rock Werchter, by a trendsetting Belgian magazine. "Wathever happens: we hate Oasis. As long as you bang on long and hard enough about how big and handsome and great you are, and as long as you poke your middle finger or a broken beerglass in the eye of anybody who dares to suggest that you stole it all from the Beatles, you will always find a bunch of spineless idiots who take your word for it. But we're not into that: we truly hate Oasis. We hate their music, their mentality, their ugly mancunian pieholes, their fans, their groupies, their entourage, yes even their eyebrows, the anoying whine of Liam Gallagher, the even more irritating way in which he boringly shakes his tambourine, the laughable, lifeless 'I-really-have-to-go'pose behind the microphone. We won't even talk about the music, a fat peasoup of noise in which everything that faintly sounds like taste or inspiration is stolen from Lennon and McCartney. And all the fans who take it that masterbrain Noel gets himself replaced halfway the fookin' tour, well they just deserve a band like Oasis, until the last anoying note, the last clattering fart. And what a shame the Werchter audience didn't take an example to the Pinkpop audience in Holland: they trew junk at Liam's head, until he cowardly stopped the show. Who are the fookin' sissies actually?"

There's just one detail I'd like to point out: people here complain all the time about rumours and fakes, but on the other hand they are, sometimes, the ones to start them. How? Jumping to conclusions instead of buiding a rational approach. One week was enough to cause every sort of bad things to be written about Morrissey here due to a faked interview, now I see some more examples, as saying that somebody who is Mexican was the one who forged Morrissey's place during the interview.
First of all, Morrissey just suggested the possibility that somebody took his place in the interview as a way to exhaust all possibilities, and never said much more about the subject.
But just to oppose more recent rumours here: how could a person who was born in America and lived there most of his life immitate Morrissey, possibly?
We have to trust our instincts on the Internet, for we cannot see here. But vision is just one sense, and instincts are often a product of mixed senses and impressions, which can be submitted to rational approach at any time, for often they make sense.
I confess I was fooled about two other rumours related to other members of the band, but this time, while reading the interview, and trying to translate it to English, I could not find Morrissey's "echo" in there.
If we are talking about how to establish an identity as real, as the right one, we don't need DNA samples nor trust: there's always something that is UNIQUE in that person that we are aware of. And, once again, this post is REALLY a genuine one. Try to "hear" it instead of reading it.

If Morrissey did an interview tomorrow and said, "Golly, you know I just love Oasis! They're my fave!!", it wouldn't change my opinion of the man or his music. This whole nonsense reminds me of when I was in highschool. I was a sad little goth-ling so naturally, I listened to sad goth music.
