Subtract a number from it's "opposite", the number with the digits reversed, and the result will be a multiple of 9.

If you want to know how long it will take an investment with a constant interest rate to double, divide 72 by the interest rate to get the number of years. In other words, a 6% savings rate will double your investment in 12 years.
