Hey all,
Tonight i take my first steps into the "wonderful" world of life as a college deejay. My new show "Radio Free Toledo" debuts tonight at Midnight eastern time until 2am. It's an excuse, basically, to play whatever I want, so you're bound to here a lot of Moz, Smiths, R.E.M, Joy Division, Elvis, that sorta thing. The kind of thing that you just don't here on commercial radio in the American Midwest so often.
If anybody wants to listen, you can find it at wxut.com (http://www.wxut.com).
Wish me luck! :)

Excellent. Can you answer me this - why do local US radio stations have four or five-letter abbreviationed names always starting with W or K? Or is that a gross generalisation?

Something to do with the FCC allocation of radio bandwidth. It's got to be on wikipedia. All I know is that they are W east of the Mississippi river, and K west of it. They use them for TV stations, too. They are formally composed of four letters, but are often abbreviated in common usage (WXRT in Chicago is known as XRT because it just sounds cooler.)
Three-letter designations (WGN, WLS, etc.) were reserved for "Super-stations" which were permitted to broadcast a much stronger signal that carried further. When I lived in Kansas as a child, we received WGN, which is a Chicago-based station. We also got TBS out of Atlanta. Which is neither W nor K. Hmm...
Oh my god, it's Robby!

New broadcasting stations are assigned call signs beginning with K, if they are west of the Mississippi River, and beginning with W if they are east of the river. Again, some early stations have been grandfathered, so there are four broadcasters with a K prefix east of the Mississippi, and a few dozen with a W on the west side. (There are more grandfathered W stations because the dividing line used to be two states farther west.) Some examples would be KDKA in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, KYW in Philadelphia, and WACO in Waco, Texas, which also has the distinction of being one of only two radio stations whose call sign is the same as its community of license. Stations located near the Mississippi River may have either letter, depending on the precise location of their community of license and on historical contingencies. Minnesota and Louisiana are allowed to use both call letter prefixes since the Mississippi river flows through both states in addition to forming parts of their borders. Metro areas that straddle different states on both sides of the river, such as St. Louis, Memphis and the Quad Cities area of Iowa/Illinois, have stations with both call letter prefixes, due to the stations' towers themselves being placed on either side of the river.

Congratulations on your radio show! Radio is making a vicious COMEBACK (thanks to Ghoul, I'm sure). Um. What about my radio show, "Jamie's Jukebox"? I play anything I want too! Please listen, although, I may or may not take to kindly to requests. What I play, is really really good stuff. In fact, yesterday I dedicated "Munich" by Editors to Robby, Chico and broccoli_spears, ask her, she listened. I also dedicated a song, "Daisy" by Hal 9000 (from the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey) to Dave Tseng. I wonder if he listened. This is strange. My show is on Tuesday's too. In fact, it's on at 2pm (mountain time) AND yesterday was MY very first show. How interesting and strange and true.
