View Full Version : a question for the musicians/guitarists about YOR

I'm not a musician so I have some bit of admiration for anyone who can play a recognizable tune on an instrument, so my question is:

Is there anything unique or extraordinary in the composition of or playing of the music on YOR?

Johnny Marr was known for much guitar work and layering on Smiths songs; is there anything like that here?

People say how they try to replicate Marr's work on their own and have to really work at it or can't even do it; could anyone with a decent amount of guitar experience play these tunes?

I'm not criticizing anything, just wondering what the opinions are from a musicians standpoint, rather than a listeners.

Now, I'm not knocking the songs at all, because in nearly every case they're pretty bloody good, but I will say I've noticed an increase in the hanging seventh chords, especially the E7 before ploughing into the next line. It's been a Boz trademark for a long time, but I've noticed Jesse doing it too.

What does that mean...he's got a lazy finger?

Never mind if it is to in depth into guitarmanship.

edit:
How do you tell who's playing which guitar part?

There is probably a lot that is lost in order to try and create the full sound that Morrisseys band have had for some time, there are definitely different styles in place. Johnny Marr obviously wanted to be heared playing melodic riffs and they obviously spent a lot of time putting guitar parts together to create the picture he had in mind - there isn't any that done in Morrissey solo work.

I would regard stuff like William and Girl Afraid as a challenge to play and I love just picking up my guitar and playing them. I have never been inclined to do this this Morrissey solo work and his new work isn't identifiable but its guitar work. I love the songs but I just don't crave to play them as they don't sound like they would be a challenge.

I meant the composers. Paris is a good example:

Chorus: C Am D7 F E7 Am C E7 F

I know using sevenths to convey anticipation is common songwriting practice - I must say I've seen a lot in recent Moz songs. Although, if you asked me to detail them, it would take me ages to trawl through the songs; I'll do it if required though.

Boz is in the left speaker, where he stands on stage.

That is a guess by the way !

PREPARE FOR A LONG REPLY. WASN'T MEANT TO BE THAT WAY.

Yes...I've noticed that too. And it gets boring I think, when it's there in so many, many of his newer songs.

Or well, I guess I see what you mean anyway...is this an example?:

Instead of maybe the more common C F Am G, he would go: C F Am E7, or just end it with an E7 at the end of many of the chord sequences I guess, whether the first chord is C or Am for example. As you might see, I'm not too good at music theory, but I think I get (exactly) what you mean, and...I wish he'd go back to that kind of harmonic stuff a bit more, like for example in songs such as "Such a little thing makes such a big difference", "Will never marry", "My love life" or "Everyday is like sunday".
Those are all really old songs by now, I know...but the same chords which were used in those songs still exist today...

I miss Johnny Marr, regarding this particular subject. Or why not Boz and/or Alain when they wrote that kind of songs more often.
Not saying that the newer songs are really bad or anything, but...they're just not as good as you expect from someone who has sung songs which went straight into your heart the first time you heard them, and not only talking about the lyrics now.

I think that "That's how people grow up" is a good example of this kind of thing. The chorus is great I think, with the melody and the chord changes, except for the last chord...I hate it when you sit and think "oh, what if he had played that particular chord instead of the one he chose to use...it would have been great!" when you listen to a particular song. As I've written, I enjoy a G or an F at the end of a chord sequence which starts with (for example) C or Am much more than if it ends with an E or E7...at least most of the time.
