Morrissey uses a motorbike sound at the start of 'I'm Throwing My Arm's Around Paris' which reminded me that he's used this trick before - in 'Speedway'

I was trying to think of other non-musical noises, the school bell in 'Billy Budd' immediately springs to mind. The animal noises used on 'Meat Is Murder' is another...

Good thread. I like this.

I like...

The funny stuff in the break of Black-Eyed Susan
The whips (??) in Sorrow Will Come In The End
The cameras at the start of Children In Pieces
The children's laughs in Suffer Little Children
The ethereal 'Steven....' in Will Never Marry

There's plenty more, but I can't bring them to mind right now.

Anyone know what that noise is on the intro of 'The Youngest Was The Most Loved'?

Love that. There are a lot of clanks, bangs and clunks on that song.

I don't think Harsh Truth gets enough love and appreciation. :guitar: :sweet:

Is that what that is? I always wondered...by "put down" do you mean set down or filled up with water? To me, it sounds like water pouring into a glass.

OH! Finally! I have the opportunity to post this:

Does anyone else hear cricket chirps in This Night Has Opened My Eyes?

It's been driving me crazy since 1999. I've listened to it on every medium possible and I attest to hearing several cricket chirps.

Or maybe it's just me...

There's a distinct inhale, like he's taking a hit from a cigarette, and a glass is set down, I always assumed it was alcohol of some type being poured because he's getting smashed again.

I was thinking about the significance of the engine starting on 'I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris', and the symbolic reasoning behind it to me was that it is Morrissey, or the protagonist in the song is driving, possibly on a motorbike, to Paris, after numerous rejections.
Can anyone think of a better reason, or any other interpretations? For that matter, does everyone think there is a purpose for Morrissey's sound effects, Or is it just 'art for art's sake' and there for the sake of it?

At the beginning of a race, the flagman says "Gentlemen, start your engines." When he throws his arms around Paris (the eiffel tower) he's about to run a race.

Really? I dunno... I 'spose it could be some kind of machinery, never thought about it (maybe my 'sound system' isn't as good) but what would that have to do with entertainment?...it's more like an undecipherable train noise to me.

Yes, it's a very underrated cover. Some people think Moz ruined the Jam's song (not me), they're equally good and yet very different. Then again, I love the song, period.

On Asian Rut, there's a lot of background chatter and of course, that evil laugh at the end of "...the cruel, cold killing of his very best friend..."

I think this is a good question CasTiger.

I think that Morrissey sound effects USUALLY add value to the song.
i.e. the submarine 'ping' noise (sonar??) in 'I'm Not Sorry' which accompanies the line 'I'm slipping below the water line' is total genius.

But sometimes it seems pointless to me, like the drill/chainsaw in Speedway.

This is especially strange because on the 1991 Kill Uncle tour Morrissey would often sneeze at the end of that song. He even did it at least once when he pulled the song out again at the end of last year. It's probably another one of his injokes.

yeah probably..but im not expert on these drum maschines..so i would like to know what exactly do they use..
its also sounding a bit like banging on metal..the least thing i expect to hear in a morrissey song...
i would rather has it used on another song of his, but not on maudlin street..the maudlin lyrics dont fit this noise in my opinion-dont seea connection, why they use it in that particular song..i see why this chainsaw(or motor was used in speedway

There's that weird vibration/echo thing at the beginning of Let Me Kiss You. It's actually throughout the song if you listen closely. It drives me slightly batty when I focus on it...but I do love the song, so it's all good. :)

There are also a lot of odd computer?-like noises on All The Lazy Dykes. I can't decide if it would be any better or worse without them... the song's awesomeness overshadows all.

YATQ is full of odd sounds. I think it's why some people don't care for it or its production. Still beats ROTT, imo.
