A thread for all two-wheeling members! General bike geekiness, basically. :)

My primary mode of transportation:

Needs a new saddle though, after a near death experience where it came loose and tipped back massively on a really busy road. I can temporarily fix it but it works loose again.

I haven't been on my bike for a few months now. It's too cold and then I get too hot when I'm peddling, and all my coats are too long. I love cycling, and I'm going to be able to cycle to school everyday when I move! :)

That's an unfortunate incident. When was it?

You should buy/make a skirt guard, that would stop the coat being a problem! I cycle to school. :) The near death thing happened today.

I ride one around London and I've never been hit. I can't imagine where you live is worse! Most cyclists I know have been hit at some point though. :(

Well, I've never been to London, so I don't know what it's like, but drivers in Texas are TERRIBLE. Also, where I live is mostly freeways and feeders.

Well, in the part of London I live in drivers are terrible, I swear half of them have fake licences, but London in general it's mainly the sheer quantity of cars vs you that can be a bit scary. I have no idea what a feeder is but cycling on a freeway doesn't sound good. :p

A feeder is something that you use to merge off of or onto a freeway. It's not ideal for cycling either. :D

I feel pretty safe leaving my bike places. See the picture in my first post. :p But also because it's a womens style one and they're harder to sell on so less desirable for thieves.

that is an old ladies bike or a hippies:p or you look like a school teacher.:D

you try cycling down the finchley road....nightmare:cool: anyway, da bike was nick, innit and its too far to cycle to work now!

It's too dangerous to be an old ladies bike hahah. It's a punk bike because it only cost £25! I haven't had it long, but I'm going to jazz it up a bit for Critical Mass next week.

my bike was more punk then yours :p , as it was free and left out side someones house, when they left.:guitar:

so what does it look like now?

Hardcore :guitar:;)

I couldn't actually go to Critical Mass, so it looks pretty much the same, except it has a new seat, a NoSweat sticker and an Antifa sticker. :)

Thats a very nice bike.
One of the things I miss the most about my hometown, Copenhagen, is being able to cycle everywhere - there are cycle lanes all over the city.
I had to leave my bike behind when I moved to the UK a few months ago. Now I live in a small town in essex and I am quite convinced that I would get killed if I tried to cycle here.

I also have an old mountain bike with a rack and panniers which I use to go recycling or shopping. I hate riding it though and use this one most of the time. My job is 10 miles away on a busy road and I don't cycle to work, but if I absolutely had to I could.

HAHA! My legs could definitely use it, but the distance isn't what bothers me. I don't ride to work b/c I'm pretty sure I'd be a stain on the concrete at some point, b/c it's mostly a very bike-unfriendly ride on a narrow road with no shoulder and lots of speeding angry drivers. I do see a few people riding it on weekends, but never during rush hour. :(

And thanks for the bike complement. :)

Awww, that's a really nice bike as well! :( I would have thought painting it would pretty much mean it wouldn't get stolen, though?! Like, because I would have thought it's really hard to sell on bikes which haven't got logos etc. I dunno. You should get another one!

Fixed gear. You only have one gear setting, and no brakes. When the wheels turn, the pedals turn, so you have to always be pedalling. You pedal backwards to stop. :)

oh, dont do that, that makes it hard to go uphill :straightface:i find it actually easier because its less resistance since the bike is always propelling you forward. only harder if the hill is really steep and you have a high gear.

Yeah, it's great. Also, as a tourist in the summer, you can use the citybikes. They are free, you just put in a 20dkk (£2) deposit and you can use it all over the city. When you're done you just put it back in the designated citybike parking. I Don't think any other city has that.

my mum has been been without a car since i was 9 and even later when i moved out (with 18)I cycle everywhere cause I dont have a drivers licence and money to use the citypublic transport too often within a city where i live so i have too use a bike..Im not a fan of cycling since i have to travel everywhere at every weather-snow ,rain( i dont bother too buy a bus/tube ticket where i have to pay 2.70 euro for one station already..but now in hamburg Im forced too to take the tube sometimes...
I have an aversion of walking as i have problems with my foot so I rather take my bike even for distances..but its not really a funactivity..like some families cycling around at weekends....its what I use to move forward simply
.the problem is my bikes dont last long: either get stolen or dont last too long and the repair cocts are so high i could buy a new bike from it...my last (used bought) bike a has a flat iron every month and the bicycle chain pop out so the bike gets into open loop i.e. the the pedal and the botton bracket spins round but the bike doesnt move forward
.. it has been stolen

and my new bike is excellent comapred to others..hope it will be in my posession for longer...

i never had a mountain bike or bikes with more than 5 gear shifts ..just a plain 3 or 5 gear shift ..couldnt handle/felt comfortable on more than 5 gear shift bike
flensburg where I live is comapred to the rest of the mostly flat/even north here
pretty hilly...and also in the hamburg district where i live..which gets slighly annoying if you have to cycle the mountain several times a day to get back home

Here's my bike. Just a Schwinn Frontier, nothing hot. But I have a cool horn if you can see it. That silver thing on the handle bars. My neighborhood has lots of bike paths in multiple parks. The best thing I added to the bike was the seat, which is one of those with the open crack down the middle. Very comfy.
