I suspect I'm in the minority, but I absolutely love this song. When I first got hold of a bootleg of one of the live performances, I played it to death. It's melodic, memorable, warm and charming. I think it'll do well in terms of air play and chart positioning.

On most shows they don't have music on the podcast, probably for copyright reasons, I'm not sure whether it will be the case here.
I doubt iPlayer will work outside the U.K. so I think you'll have to wait until somebody rips it to MP3.

A Boz clarinet solo has been long over due. Am I right in thinking that Have a go merchant was the last time we heard it?
Next question is when do we get to see the video? A Paris theme perhaps?

Rumour has it that Channel 4 (UK) have the video exclusive.
Don't know the date, or what it will show.
But watch the schedules.

I don't think you're in the minority -- fans generally agree it's a very pleasant song. The disagreements were about whether it should be the first single, or a single at all.
Based on the live performances I think it's a much too MOR to be a single. These days, Morrissey singles do better when they're punchy and catch listeners off guard and the lyrics are discussed in the press. Paris is a lovely tune but it won't do any of those things. Of course, I'm happy to be proven wrong!
Really looking forward to the studio version. Hope Boz' clarinet stays.

Ken Bruce has to be the most irratating DJ on the whole station.
Even worse than Steve Wright. Even worse than Wogan.

No, I don't blame you for being suspicious. It could quite easily be a fake. I think it's quite well done if it is and usually I find fan created covers horribly amateur. I assumed it was genuine because I've never seen that picture before, but you could be right.
And actually if you look at that site in a bit more detail, it does seem a bit dodgy.

It looks real-ish to me. This is the filename: morrissey-paris-packshot_600x600_100kb.jpg. That's a pretty specific image naming scheme for a faker to bother with. And it's a very lo-res file, no surprise the font doesn't look its best.

Well, the record company have obviously given up on Radio 1! (They gave R1 the premier of THPGU).
In response to other posts, people generally quite like 'Paris' but it came last in our poll for first single (of all the ones we knew).
It's a pleasant dreamy song. R2 may A-list it but the crucial thing is Virgin/Absolute and Xfm who only give lots of spins (Xfm will play all his new stuff but not frequently) to the very best upbeat Moz songs and this ain't one of them.
Without support beyond R2, it may struggle to go top 10, which may mean the album won't reach 1.

It is unusual. The photo may have been from that Hot Press series; remember that photo of him and the Spanish kitten? I'll post up the scan.
Yes, the title looks very bitmapped. The artist might have at least tried to blend the title into the poster artwork. :D
Am I crazy to think than that's MLK in a hat and shades? I say that only because "Follow Your Dream" is screened below?

Instrumentation sounded lovely, but was it just me or was there something up with Morrissey's 'S' sounds ? I was listening on analogue FM with clear reception so I don't think it was the signal, but every time Moz sang 'abscence', 'stone', 'steel', 'smiling face', etc, it sounded like he'd had his face panned in and was singing through a handful of teeth! It was shlurring or dishtortion or shomething. Am I off me head ? He sounded like a 70 year old!
Also found it quite bizarre that the last 'world exclusive' play of a brand new Moz track was only around 12 months back with 'That's How People Grow Up' on Radio 1's Zane Lowe show, and here we are one year on with a premiere on Ken Bruce. It's a bit of a head-spinner, to go from the shit-kickin, bitchin',block-rockin' beatz (etc) of the Zanemeister to comatose Ken and his 'The Love Song' slot !! I'm not sure who I loathe more.....

In giving the first play to Radio 1, the record company were hoping R1 might return the favour but they didn't, keeping the song off their playlist and giving it the very occasional spin on an indie show.
Conversely, Radio 2 put THPGU on their A-list (was their most played song at one point) so record company figures they may as well keep good relations with R2 and stop wasting their time with R1.

Oh, very nice indeed! Listening to the mp3 on headphones here, thanks. Very warm feel to it all -- nice work Jerry Finn (RIP). Like the piano during the verses.
Lost Highway -- spring for a big billboard on Boulevard Saint-Germain to advertise the single. It would be very fitting.
Edit: When I heard the early live airings, I thought the song wouldn't be out of place on Maladjusted. I don't think so now. It's the more organic feel of Ringleader with the crisp Finn production (always liked the way he treated Morrissey's vocals).

It's because of the low bitrate (64kbps) of the recording, not because he's really sounding like a geezer. The lossless version won't sound like this.

Enjoy

Sounds really good. Kind of what I was expecting really. Was this recorded before Morrissey started playing it live as it sounds pretty identical to the live version, not a bad thing as such.....

I wasn't sure about the song when I heard it played live, but this is very nice indeed. I agree with the comments though, about Moz sounding like he's had had his teeth snmashed in, or has a very bad ulcer in the first part of the song. Anuway, minor gripe, I like it a lot.

Great detective work, Uncleskinny. I knew it was MLK; he has such a distintive profile. Never seen him in a hat and shades before.
The artist, MBW, whoever he/she is should be very pleased.

Melody-wise not at all, but vocally Moz is singing in a similar register and fashion. Wouldn't have occurred to me if it wasn't mentioned, though.

No way is that a single !
Pretty below average.
Piss poor "tune" and ,again, pretty mundane lyrics.

Thank you! I thought I was touched in the head or something and I was the only one to hear it. I mean I realise Moz has a slight speech impediment but on this he sounds like he's got a cleft palate!!
I'm getting used to it now after a few listens, and am liking it musically more and more. I also love its very brevity ( Is this the shortest Moz/Smiths single ever ? 2m30 top to toe !) and its strange structure. It could only be Moz I think. But, oh, the teeth....:o

Its a terriffic song and charming definately describes the delivery.I agree musically its similar to My Love Life and also feel some of the instrumental midway through, reminiscent of Every Day Is Like Sunday.Love it.

I just heard it again too on Jeremy Vine, Radio 2. I love the single, I think it's definitely his strongest for a long time and the melody is instantly likeable. The way he sings the verses and some of the chord changes are reminiscnet of Magazine's Song From Under The Floorboards to my ears. Great song!:)

I was switching channels in my car just before Christmas and within two notes of the intro I recognised this song, even though I'd only heard it once before. I think that's quite a good sign.
