This morning at The Pigalle club on Piccadilly Morrissey introduced Years Of Refusal to about 60 people, mostly journalists I presume.
I loved it. He was looking good.
Don't bother with the thumbnails, here are the lyrics (this time large enough to read)

From Q News:
Morrissey unveiled his new album today, possibly his most rocking collection to date. And the man himself was on hand to introduce the new release, Years Of Refusal, which is due out on February 16.
Moz quipped that the child on the cover of the album was his own when he appeared at a playback for the 12-track release. “I’m the person in the picture which is not Photoshopped – that’s my son. This is my new album. Please, God, you like it,” he said as he premiered the album at London’s Pigalle club.
The new album is heavy on power chords on tracks on opener Something Is Squeezing My Skull, but there are touches of Mariachi elsewhere, while You Were Good In Your Time is lush and cinematic, ending with a wash of effects and snatched noises.
Morrissey said nothing about a report in today’s story in the Mirror that The Smiths were about to reform.

i didnt say that...
what i meant/ was that most of his YOR lyrics are pretty straight forward
so most lines are (or seems to be) pretty clear what is it about
..I wouldnt have asked about opinions if i wasnt interested in a discussion, right?
and for a lot of lyrics he wrote in the past it wasnt clear what is exactly was about...

Suddenly you have a firm grasp of English now. So how's your mom doing, you know, after the bomb scare and all?
..i hope your mum is never in the danger of such thing..why exactly you bring that topic up-here?
..well other than hurting me? what hat has it to do with the thread?
and you really expect me to think about the correct phrasing while i did type it back then...when I this has nothing to do with the thread
could say something more to you but I spare that..i wont post any replies to you inside in this thread but edit and write it in here
delete this sentence and your hijacking, if you have some manners...
i can scan my mums postcard which I have received if tht makes you any happier..
.you mean,nasty XXX
edit: to your nasty assumptions further down which make your first comment relatively harmless: thts bullshit..I have edited the first post on the India thread ,yes cause i have submitted some more info. to it.a comment or anything like that.which i hadnt written in the first moment i did post it...so naturally i did get back and write more
how could you dare say that i made that up..who would made such a thing up? i love my mum more than life...so i have really no words for this
the other posts i made at that day that followed the first post back then are unedited..that you even imply something like that is beyond my imagination ..
oh how is your dog doing btw?
see ?
does that make you feel good ?
so-was it necessary to say such things?
one last thing and edit today:you calling me phoney?you telling me in another thread a day before that you "like me"? do you backstabbing people you like with such insults like you did?if you dont like me well thts absolutely fine with me.then say it but dont untrue things,.and what you said to me is phoney as hell..saying that you like someone and the next day saying things like you did to me.
I have flaws like every human being,.but im not backstabbering and devious like you. i didnt know what was up with my mum and just wanted someone to calm me down. as i said in the other thread if i had reached my frend immediately i wouldnt have post the thread i did reach my friend when i logged off later when i tried again.calling her and she calmed me down
if i dont like somebody here i ignore them but dont tell them i like them as you have and say something as low to them the other day-i have no problem if people cursing at me with the f word or wjhatever cause its not personally hurting me. i got the occasional curse from the boys every once in a while who are living in my neighbourhood but it doesnt affect me
but what you did and said to me a few posts further down here is much much more mean as any swear word could ever be
.if you dont like me then put me on the ignore button or whatever
and dont bother to insult me elsewhere i wont be able to read it anyway ans wont react
to all here: return TO THE TOPIC NOW-the lyrics!

This is how I read it, keep in mind I'm crazy but give it a chance. He says he's the person in the photo who isn't photoshopped (hint: the one wearing the butterfly having emerged from the cocoon who's holding him.) Then he says "that's my son" indicating the other person in the photo meaning his ACTUAL body. He called himself "the son." He self-pronounced.

The lyrics of "Carol" reminded me instantly of "Late Night, Maudlin Street" with references back to the 70s and Mozza's past. Maybe this is more of an autobiographical album than we think. I'm crossing my fingers that at least one of the ballads becomes a single, though I've got this feeling like we'll be wishing "Carol" was a YOR single like some of us wished "Pigsty" was a ROTT single...
So...shall we get started on song-by-song lyrical analysis? :D

I am certainly no great expert in lyrical analysis but I must say all of the new songs lyrically are quite promising.
Black Cloud- Really putting the "Refusal" into Years of Refusal, I really find this lyrically a strange sibling to The More you Ignore Me. I dont get what Black Cloud means but I think none the less this track is of lyrical par far above Ringleader. I just hope the music is good and we may have a very strong track on here.
When I Last Spoke to Carol- I find this a very interesting musical portrait. I find it intriguing how these lyrics will be sung. I think this has an almost early Moz element to it. Also I think this sounding in an almost mariachi fashion could be amusing.
It's Not your Birthday Anymore- Very interesting lyrics for what is apparently a ballad. Honestly I think this has good lyrics but really isnt as thrilling as the other ones, that being said I think these have good potential for a great melody.
You Were Good in your Time-The Vauxhall reference in the Guardian is fair, this track is lyrically gorgeous probably one of the if not the best Mozz lyrics of the decade.
Sorry Doesnt Help- This track really isnt too exciting though is rather amusing, for some reason I find these lyrics a throwback to the Smiths.
I'm Ok by Myself- A very fun rock song, the lyrics for some reason remind me very much thematically close to At Last I am Born. Sounds like a fun track that isnt too different than many of Morrissey's more personal album finales.

Hey guys thank you for the reviews and Anin for those lyrics :D
In summary:
The Guardian:
So, on first impressions, a decidedly mixed, but somewhat enviable bag. For when Morrissey pulls out the stops on this album, he's the best he's been for a long time - full of heart, soul and fire
Billboard:
Morrissey's voice on the record is strong, and the production is testament to the talents of the late Jerry Finn
Gigwise:
While there’s no doubt that he tackles certain issues - most notably humanity’s two biggest emotions, love and death - Morrissey's explanations are still shrouded in ambiguity. Where ‘Years of Refusal’ really does shine, however, is musically. It’s here that, on the verge of turning 50, Morrissey has just shifted into Top Gear.
It sounds so good, I just can't believe I have to wait 2 months for its release :(
oh well...there are worse thing in life, etc :D :guitar:

I think I am getting this whole Morrissey fan thing wrong.
If most fans like something, I tend not to and vice versa (although Tony the Pony has been getting a lot of well deserved love around here lately).
I liked the lyrics. Really dark. The reviews on the music all point towards something loud and raucus. I'm pretty excited about this record.

I too thought the lyrics on Ringleader were forgettable. But I think these are of a significantly higher caliber -- more artful, more expressive, more pathos. I have high expectations for Years.

When Last I Spoke To Carol
When last I spoke To Carol I said:
'I can't pretend it gets any easier.'
She said:
'I have hung on, I have edged along this narrow ledge since the day I was born in 1975.'
When last I spoke to Carol I said:
'I can't pretend I feel love for you.'
She said:
'I've hammered a smile upon this pasty face of mine since the day I was born in 1975.'
When I said goodbye to Carol,
Black earth upon the casket fell.
She had faded to
Something I always knew;
To the rescue nobody ever comes.

What's cheesy and embarrassing about having been born in 1975? I was born the year before that, hardly my fault now, is it? I'd have come sooner if they'd left the door open... Or is there something else I don't know about 1975?

I disagree with this statement too.
Morrissey has built his reputation as a poet, with a distinct style he has carried throughout his career. It could be said that each and every song he has written have mutual undertones.
Was it Bob Dylan who said 'I've written the same song a million times?'

Humm, not really. The way I see it it might be about romantic desilusion - a situation where you don't get along anymore and yet you still want each other. You know you shouldn't ( Your voice it might say 'no') but the heart has a will of it's own. A sort of love/hate situation.
I actually know a couple like this. They were once together and are now separated for 5 years - they are still hurt and can't possibly get along , however they still want each other and it still "happens" and it's quite damaging.

I like both albums for very different reasons but if I had to give up one or face the firing squad it would be You Are The Quarry. Years Of Refusal is entirely different though particularly the production. The sound is rougher. For me this is getting close to a perfect Morrissey album. I like the immediacy of it. It's pretty basic rock/pop. Lots of drums. When I say basic I must mean perfect.
So for 15 minutes Morrissey's sitting just a few metres away. Could I bring myself to say hello? 'A very strange fear gripped me' and I don't think I'll be able to forgive myself. Then some guys from the record company introduce Morrissey, he gets up, gets all shy and the album plays.
I do remember thinking that Skull and One Day Goodbye Will Be Farewell in particular sounded even rougher (raw) on the album than they have done live. That's a good thing for me.
The trumpet intro to Goodbye Farewell could have stayed but I'm not going to worry too much.
But really it was too difficult to concentrate and recall all the new tracks individually. Especially when Morrissey is sitting across the room while Something Is Squeezing My Skull was playing. Absolutely surreal.
I want to hear it again. NOW.

Damn, I really liked the trumpet in this song and when Pooley joined the band with his amazing ability to suck, he really ruined this song in a way by not playing the trumpet ... but I guess thats Moz's decision. Is there any trumpet at all in it/is it just the intro trumpet that is gone?

From the "Uncut" newsletter 15/12/08...
I managed, though, to sneak away from the office for a couple of hours last week when the savage glare of our fearsome Production Editor, to whose schedules we all must dutifully adhere, was directed elsewhere, a momentary distraction I was able to take full advantage of.
Anyway, when he wasn't looking, I made a surreptitious exit and headed into the West End and the Pigalle Club in Piccadilly, for a playback of the new Morrissey album, Years Of Refusal, which is coming out next February.
The Pigalle turns out to be a pretty swanky nightclub, like something you might see in archive footage of the 50s or 60s, when it might have been full of Brylcreemed gangsters, villains from Whitechapel and Bow and similar 'manors', up West for the night, accompanied by buxom starlets with platinum beehives, the place otherwise full of raffish movie stars, familiar faces from awful British films of the time, and football managers, the shadier kind, wreathed in cigar smoke, dolly birds in tow, ordering champagne by the bucket-load.
It's full of music hacks this afternoon, some of them from far afield, all present to lend an ear to Morrissey's latest opus. Morrissey is even here himself, to introduce the album.
He gets up from the table where he's been sitting, and with a little cough leaps on the small stage, where an easel has been set up with a large mock-up of the new record's sleeve resting on it, Morrissey in the picture that adorns said sleeve holding a baby.
"It's not photo-shopped," he now tells us, and he sounds like he's got a cold. "That's my son," he playfully quips, as eyebrows go up across the room.
He goes on to make a short speech, but watching him, wondering why he appears to be wearing clothes that look at least a size too small from him, I am thinking of the description of the great man in poet Simon Armitage's wonderful memoir Gig: The Life And Times Of A Rock Star Fantasist, in which he recalls seeing Morrissey - "with his waiter's hips and builder's shoulders" - at King George's Hall, Blackburn, I can't remember when.
"Back in the Eighties," Armitage writes, "there was barely enough of Morrissey to stop his paisley shirts and floral blouses from completely imploding. Now he looks like a retired shire horse standing on its back legs, or something from mythology, as if those tailored Italian trousers might be hiding a pair of goat's legs."
I snap out of this brief reverie as Morrissey winds up his introduction.
"This is my new album, please God you like it," he says, with a little bow of his head. He exits the stage as the first rumblings from the album, something with the cheery title of "Something Is Squeezing My Skull", flood through the speakers that are everywhere around the room.
That's as much, I think, as I might be allowed to say for the moment about Years Of Refusal without risking a good hiding from someone. I'm sure, though, we'll have a lot more to say about it at the appropriate time.
Until then, all the best.

I agree, Mozette, I have an image in my mind of Moz standing in front of a load of paps and journalists, flash blubs flashing in his finest Gucci suit for this premiere. Too bad there are no photos.:(

I picture it more like the video for The Youngest Was The Most Loved (except Alain wasn't in it.)

Ta very much, Anin!
I'm sure I'm not the only one very keen to hear the rest of your impressions of Mozzer's to-do at the Pigalle Club. :)
I have a fondness for Pigalle in Paris...the sleaze and Mozzer's connection to it (was found in a bar there earlier this year by fans and chose it as a background for the pix below from a '92 interview)

Is it just me or did anyone find the lyrics to "It's Not Your Birthday Anymore" disturbing for possibly describing a rape? My emphasis in bold.
Your voice it might say 'no'
But the heart has a will of its own
Your voice it might say 'no'
But the heart has a will of its own
It's not your birthday anymore
There's no need to be kind to you
and the will to see you smile and belong has now gone
It's not your birthday anymore
did you really think we meant
all of those syrupy, sentimental things
______that we said?
It cannot be given
and so it must be taken
it cannot be given
and so it must be taken
All of the gifts that they gave can't compare in any way to the love I am now
giving to you right here right now on the floor
all of the gifts that they gave can't compare in any way to the love I am now
giving to you right here right now on the floor
It's not your birthday anymore
there's no need to be kind to you
and the will to see you smile and belong has now gone
It's not your birthday anymore
did you really think we meant
all of those syrupy, sentimental
___things that we said yesterday?
I remember that interview very well .. and sadly a couple of years later i went to paris and went down onto the metro platform at pigalle to have my photo taken next to the station sign with my tongue quite literally in my cheek a la Moz !

You had me right there. (but I would not 'take one' for Quarry) Thank you for letting us live vicariously thru you! I appreciate a (mostly ;)) unbaised opinion of the new record. Cannot wait to hear it. And your surreal Moz experience makes the hairs on my arm stand up *drool:oswoon*
thanks EP babe & Je Suis Julie - yep, love can be strange
I'm another who agrees with your analysis, justme. So that makes three women... Three married women. hmmmm :D

Interesting! Thanks for the reply. It seems that most people agree with JustMe's interp.
I would agree that the narrative seems to come from a "romantic delusion" (and as a couple of m-soloists have oh-so-kindly suggested, I am well acquainted with delusion )...but I think the delusion in this song sounds very one-sided and coming from the aggressor.
As much as I am disturbed by what I read into some of his lyrics, I very much enjoy the frisson of Morrissey's deviance or even what might be called evil. Diverging or even contradictory interpretations can co-exist (and often do) in Morrissey's work. It's what makes it so rich and interesting!
I agree with you, it seems Mozzie is doing strange things here, without the consent of his partner...:eek:It reminds me the lyrics: "I m' gonna get you".
My god, Morrissey, making love savagely on the floor...:horny:How fascinating!
Oh, here I thought I had a comrade in thought and then you have to go and make it horny! :p But before you got into Moz-rutting-savagely-on-the-floor mode, you alluded to a song that I was thinking of when I thought of "It's Not Your Burfday Anymore" as a look into a rapist's mind -- "Jack the Ripper"! Not that Jack the Ripper was a confirmed rapist, but the elements of sexual sadism and misogyny cannot be lost on those who ponder his brutal murders of prostitutes.
"You don't refuse, but you don't agree" -- maybe she can't agree because she's disembowelled and dead. Or it's hardly true consent if someone is holding a knife to your throat. I get chills as well as the urge to laugh with this lyric. Moz used to joke when prefacing this song live that he himself is privy to Jack the Ripper's thoughts. Hmmm...what are you telling us about yourself, Moz? I have a story about this song done live in 2002, but I'll save it for another time/post.
Another song that goes in a similar sublime vein -- romantic and cruel, attractive and terrifying -- is "The Boy with the Thorn in His Side". Who else but Moz has the charm to pull off such a song? He talks about a "plundering desire for love" (a pretty, poetic way of saying rapist tendencies?) and about "hatred" and "murderous desire" and makes it sound so sympathetic and alluring.
Now I must face it: We are no better than Twilight fans. :p We adore the "vampire" that Moz is. He is this incredibly attractive and misunderstood monster. No matter how much he proclaims his hideous evilness, we love him all the more for it and desperately wish to be his victims er--lovers.

Phew. So it's just me that wants MarshmallowMan then?
Past a certain age, you just get very lovey-dovey...Morrissey and Mel are too young obviously...
but you too would make a nice couple....In a "ouch, that hurt!" way. :p
"The agressor". :gun: Tee heeeeeeeee. Decorating the house with snowdomes... (Ooooh, EVIL!)
Baby jesus says there is no such thing as a love/ hate relationship btw. Apparently either it's called lovelove, or well, it's called Spacemountain.
I'm still not tall enough for the latter so I think I'll just watch.:p (If I get too loud with the popcorn during the rape scene, just hush me Mel, ok?)
(...And have I wished you guys a merry xmas?)

Has anyone started to transcribe the lyrics to the new songs? Let´s collect them here. I´ll start with some well-known lyrics
All You Need Is Me
You hiss and groan and you constantly moan
But you don't ever go away
That's because
All you need is me
You roll your eyes up to the skies
Mock horrified
But you're still here
All you need is me
There's so much destruction
All over the world
And all you can do is
Complain about me
You bang your head against the wall
And say you're sick of it all
Yet you remain
'Cause all you need is me
And then you offer your one and only joke
And you ask me what will I be
When I grow up to be a man
Uhm, nothing!
There's a soft voice singing in your head
Who could this be?
I do believe it's me
There's a naked man standing, laughing in your dreams
You know who it is
But you don't like what it means
There's so much destruction
All over the world
And all you can do is
Complain about me
I was a small, fat child in a council house
There was only one thing I ever dreamed about
And Fate has just
Handed it to me - whoopee
You don't like me, but you love me
Either way you're wrong
You're gonna miss me when I'm gone
You're gonna miss me when I'm gone
That´s How People Grow Up
I was wasting my time
Trying to fall in love
Disappointment came to me and
Booted me and bruised and hurt me
But that's how people grow up
That's how people grow up
I was wasting my time
Looking for love
Someone must look at me
and see there's someone of their dreams
I was wasting my time
Waiting for love
For the love that never comes from
Someone who does not exist
That's how people grow up
That's how people grow up
Let me live before I die
Oh, not me, not I
I was wasting my life
Always thinking about myself
Someone on the deathbed said
"There are other sorrows too"
I was driving my car
I crashed and broke my spine
So yes, there are things worse in life than
Never being someone's sweetie
That's how people grow up
That's how people grow up
As for me I'm ok
For now anyway

I know the lyrics were leaked back around the time of the album showcase, but did anyone bother typing them up to be copied/pasted etc?
I don't mind doing it myself, but if it's already been done....
I'd like to put them on my iPod, see if they help get me into the music any more.
Some of the lyrics really seem to clash with the musicality of the album. Anyone else find some of the abruptness jarring?

"Something Is Squeezing My Skull" (Morrissey, Alain Whyte) – 2:38
I'm doing very well
I can block out the present and the past now
I know by now you think I should have straightened myself out
Thank you drop dead
Oh, something is squeezing my skull
Something I can barely describe
There is no love in modern life
I'm doing very well
It's a miracle I've even made it this far
The motion of taxi's excites me
When you Peel it back and bite me
Oh, something is squeezing my skull
Something I can barely describe
There is no hope in modern life
Oh, something is squeezing my skull
Something I can’t fight
No true friends in modern life
Diazepam...Valium...Temazepam...Lithium
HRT..ECT......How long must I stay on this stuff?
Don't give me anymore
Don’t give me anymore
Don’t give me anymore
Don’t give me anymore
Please don’t give me anymore
Don’t give me anymore
Don’t give me anymore
You swore you would not give me anymore
Don’t give me anymore
Don’t give me anymore
Don’t give me anymore
Please don’t give me anymore
Don’t give me anymore
Don’t give me anymore
You swore you would not give me anymore
Don’t give me anymore
Don’t give me anymore
Don’t give me anymore
give me anymore
give me anymore
give me anymore
give me anymore
give me anymore
give me anymore
give me anymore
Oh, you swore
You swore
You swore
You swore you would not give me anymore
give me anymore
give me anymore
give me anymore
give me anymore
give me anymore
give me anymore
give me anymore

This my be old news, but I couldn't find anything about it through the search function, so I'll post it anyway:
During the official pre-listenings of the new album, lyric sheets were handed out to the journalists. I just found a link where someone (not me) has uploaded scans of the whole thing:

Thanks for this.
And I'm sure you all have noticed in "Something Is Squeezing My Skull" that he mentions "HRT." My husband the psychiatrist said this must refer to hormone replacement therapy and questioned why Morrissey would have mentioned this one. I told him he's very clever and crafty, that's why!
