I was looking at rhino website today for details of smith's sound of cd,and found this snippet, On November 3rd 2008 Rhino will release 'The Sound Of The Smiths' - available on newly remastered 1 Cd and Deluxe 2 CD editions. Including all the hit singles, the Limited Edition also contains rare B-sides, non-album tracks and live performances.
On the same day the 7" vinyl Singles boxset will also be available exclusively from Rhino.co.uk. Further details to follow.
Singles boxset surely thats enough now.

Is there anything left to re-release? (http://www.rhino.co.uk/thesmiths,biography#) I shan't be buying the 7"s, that's too much. One for the hardcore collectors, I'm happy just to have the songs.

Uncleskinney has a healthy attitude towards this sort of thing, just to have the songs should be the way to go.I on the other hand am a dick and i'll buy the boxset, and anything else they can knock together.

Also it says the boxset is out in December, I thought it was coming out on the same day as the compilation?

I wish they really dug up some crazy unheard-of bootleg-type shit. Like... the rarest of the rarities... and maybe some more live songs in awesome quality. And I wish it was a 5-CD set.

I've just been browsing the HMV website and found this
http://hmv.com/hmvweb/artistIDSearch.do?ctx=12;1;58;-1&artistID=6532
Looks like the singles are being released seperately
Hand in Glove & This Chrming man on Nov 10th
What Difference & Heaven Knows on Nov 17th
William & How soon is now on 24th
Shakespear's Sister & That Joke isn't funny on Dec 1st
Boy with a thorn & Bigmouth on Dec 8th
2 Records each week, but each looking like it is being listed as a double A side - only 7" available. No artwork as yet...will be interesting to see if they use the originals, or some images of the band
What are the odds on a Smiths Xmas #1?
Let's start a Morrissey-Solo campaign...Oh, hang on, we tried that once already... :(

a box set of singles like Morrissey’s would be nice however I would like a statement from him as I have a lot of hatred for mike Joyce and I don't want to line his pockets with my hard earned money.

According to this ebay post, this boxed set will be "limited" to 7500 copies.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/The-Smiths-Singles-Box-New-12-x-7-Set-Morrissey_W0QQitemZ230298891399QQcmdZViewItem?hash =item230298891399&_trkparms=39%3A1|66%3A2|65%3A10|240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
That's hardly limited in my book.
And more from this one:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SMITHS-12x7-BOX-SET-POSTER-BADGES-V-LIMITED-MORRISSEY_W0QQitemZ300264224764QQcmdZViewItem?hash =item300264224764&_trkparms=39%3A1|66%3A2|65%3A10|240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
Two singles in this boxare exclusive to this box set
The box is completed with four contemporary badges and a poster featuring the single artworks. All singles utilise the original production
So, extra tracks AND a tacky badge - bonus!
Wait around for heavily discounted stock...

I would buy the box set if it was a cd single box set. There is no way in hell that I'm gonna waste my money on vinyl releases!
But they come with mp3 download codes. Pretty customary with vinyl these days. You'll get the mp3s along with it. Sounds like a win/win situation to me.
The only reason I can justify getting the boxset it to ask for it as a Christmas pressy.

I don't need those MP3s, I have almost all of the songs on CD already, and the new Best Of will have the rest that I don't have yet.
Even if I was collecting vinyl singles, I'd look for the original ones. I see no point in buying buying those new pressings. They are of no historic value ... they are just copies, made over twenty years later.
I would buy the CD singles box though, but only if they had all the b-sides. Releasing them with just one b-side (like a 7") makes no sense at all.

Would I be right in thinking that this is the first 'The Smiths' release with a cover image that doesn't feature a black+white or colour wash ? I think that's what is bugging me about this particular 'cover star'; I want a wash.

I'm just thinking though, even with a nicely chosen monochromatic wash to perfectly compliment the aquamarine (?) 'The Smiths' ~ it'd still be bobbins!
Perhaps the problem is the lack of subtext. There always seemed to be a hidden narrative sniffing around The Smiths 'original picture bags'. Or it's not the absence of subtext that's the problem but just that I don't find this story very interesting ~ 'big car, large penis, huge tie' ?
And yet my eyes can't help alighting on 'the packet', as the frinkers say!
Shame upon shame...;)

I was actually thinking about this too. It seems that its officially true that Moz selected the image for this. The instant I saw it I thought well maybe Moz's thinking is to separate this release from the official Smiths releases but still have his stamp of artistic approval on it by making it 21st century. Perhaps thats why its not a wash. After all, Moz abhorred when Warner tried to replicate Smiths covers, just washing random old pictures. So this is the official Smiths of the new millenium? Thoughts?

I just looked on the Rhino website again and maybe I am thick and never noticed it before but they appear to me to have updated the site with some additional details, namely that they'll be releasing all 10 singles in pairs each week for the 5 weeks between 10th of November and December 8th. Each of these is limited to 5,000 and will also be made available digitally.
It also confirms that 'The Sound of The Smiths' was done with the full co-operation of Morrissey and Marr; 'Morrissey provided the collection's title and Johnny Marr personally supervised the mastering. Both assisted in the track selection.'
Apologies if this was old news, but this seemed to me to be official confirmation of the extent of M+M's involvement, as well as official confirmation of the previously rumoured weekly release idea.
Well, I wonder what changed in the brief period since August the 9th when Moz/Julia stated on tty that he was not involved ? Maybe he had time on his hands after the 'Years of Refusal' knockback and thought 'Hang on a mo', what did I do with that old Joel Fabiani photo...?'

think this could be our promo
Hmmm I'm not too sure
The website said that the promo CD was a one track This Charming Man - this ebay item has 4 tracks. It's the artwork from Still Ill DJ only record
From the Rhino website:
Rhino UK are proud to present “Singles Box”: a clamshell card box containing the first ten UK-issued singles in their original picture sleeves. What makes this particularly special is the two singles which are exclusive to this box set: These unique inclusions are the projected fourth single - “Still Ill” (which was pressed only as DJ promo “A” label) but was ultimately passed over and replaced by “Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now” along side the Dutch release of “The Headmaster Ritual” housed in it’s black & white “cowboy” sleeve – the rarest commercially issued Smiths’ single in any territory.
The Still Ill CD is exclusive to the Boxed Set (along with Headmasters Ritual) - but will only have 2 tracks on each. This ebay item has 4 tracks - one of which is "There's a light" which doesn't appear on any of the singles listed in the collection.
It's clear that someone at Rhino has put a lot of thought into this and is attempting to tap into the wallets of avid Smiths Collectors. What I predict is that there will be a lot of confusion over what's standard issue, what's rare, what's promo, what's test pressing and what's mispressed (I suspect a lot of cock ups will be made in terms of art work / versions of songs / number of tracks etc...)
So, to sum up...buy it all :D

Leaking a bunch of tracks that, in all likelyhood, every single person on this forum will already have.
That's some heavy duty shit right there.
EDIT: Just had another though - Now, obviously the tracks have been remastered, but unless they've been ripped in a lossless format it's not exactly going to make enough of difference be worthwhile.
Either way, leak or no leak, everyone already has the songs anyway.

Just a quick question.
Could someone please tell me again what exactly those who were the first 100 to pre-order/buy the singles boxset actually get for their dedication and speedy purchasing?
Is it an extra single or the chance to enter the competition to win the box artwork -- or both?
Thanks a lot.

What makes this particularly special is the two singles which are exclusive to this box set: - “Still Ill” (which was pressed only as DJ promo “A” label) balong side the Dutch release of “The Headmaster Ritual” .
The box is completed with four contemporary badges, a poster featuring the single artworks as well as an authentication certificate that contains a unique redemption code for mp3 downloads of the tracks.
one question so the box set with headmasters and still ill is not only included in the rhino offer but from any other company like hmv.too right?
BUT the badges the poster and the mp3 trackd (and the charming man single ) is only exclusive to rhino customers right?
I got confused ...

the only thing i couldnt find there either at amazon or hmv is the " unique redemption code for mp3 downloads of the tracks."
as well as the charming man promo single for the first buyers
are there any other extra "presents" from rhino (exclusive)beside the charming man single which is not displayed on the rhino site beside this promo single(and the mp 3 download code?
other than that mp download cod and the single for the first byuers there is no difference if you buy it elsewhere and not at rhino..

When I checked yesterday HMV has set the release date to 8th december. They has also lowered the price from 56 gbp to 44 something...
I should add that HMV always has a certain amount on order when the release date is close, they do not have a single copy on order at the moment, so I believe that there will be further delays...

Shame they were not 12" format as 7" sound terrible as a dj of 17 years(early rave scene to drum and bass break beat now) i know a lot about vinyl :) but i quess i will buy to put away to hand down in years to come,as for someone saying "why do people spend so much vinyl" well as for vinyl u support the artists (as talking from the underground scene) its helps to stop robbing downloads(as it needs recording in real time to mp3 first but yes it does still happen) and it supports the scene! thats the most important to keep it out of the pop charts as for majour lables i dont find my style of music on avalible on them so...... with vinyl u get tracks no ones heard unless u are in the know u get white lables, real promos, one sided,10" dub plates, 500 copys, test presses and vinyl is so hands on if u are a dj,cds just have the stock stuff that the whole world is listening to! but as i said that from a club underground veiw,i only really buy colour vinyl or pic discs of the smiths or moz:) as there specail.

Mine hasn't arrived yet - but looks like we had this conversation a few weeks ago... the CD was meant to be a one track This Charming Man...not the 4 track promo that's been on ebay :(
think this could be our promo

That was my recollection too. Is there anywhere that actually states that it should have been the 1-track TCM, from Rhino literature?

http://i38.tinypic.com/iyltmr.jpg
The promo CD plays fine, standard single versions of all 4 songs. The 7" singles all appear to have been made from the Rough Trade masters, with the 'RT' scraped off and 'RHN' scraped off on the matrix number. Also, at first glance, some of the run-off etching messages appear to be wrong. Saddo that I am, I'll report back later.

**EDIT** - a couple more observations - The Dutch Headmaster Ritual is the only one without a Rhino etching. And secondly, "William..." is dreadfully warped. I thought it was the record player at first, but no. Disappointing.

I've referred to Passions for the verification...
The Hand in Glove etchings are A:"KISS MY SHADES", B:"KISS MY SHADES 2X". (A verbal instruction for the b-side?, originally "KISS MY SHADES TOO").
What Difference Does It Make - Has Terence Stamp on the cover (he doesn't care anymore?); A-Side has etching "WILL NATURE MAKE A MAN OF ME YET". Original WDDIM had no etching, the etching on this edition was originally on the UK 12" of This Charming Man.
William It Was Really Nothing - A-Side etching is "THE IMPOTENCE OF EARNEST"; another example of phonetic instruction, should have been "THE IMPOTENCE OF ERNEST".

No promo CD unfortunately. I'd been told by Rhino customer services I wasn't one in a hundred, but still thought, y'know, maybe......oh well. :(
My clamshell box is a bit queer though. It has a rather large bulge in the middle of the lid. Now, I'm not sure if this is a very witty design motif reflecting on the cover image, or if it's just a poxy bit of warping. :o

Hi Dave,
Have you opened your box set to see what number you have (I assume that is not your copy on ebay)? By my reckoning, those of us who recieved the cd promo from Rhino must be numbered 1 to 100, but I don't want to open mine copy to find out.
I also expect to pick up another boxset after Christmas at a greatly reduced price.

No, I've not opened mine either... I need to if I want the MP3s...
But I think Peter and some others had high numbers - 5000+

Crikey, it's £44.99 at HMV.COM
Wait for January - there will be piles of them in FOPP
Well, the euro is almost at parity with sterling :(
Unfortunately, no FOPP in Direland. Great shop, I love to visit it when I'm in Scotland.

That sucks!
Well that's made up my mind, I'm not going to open mine if there is a chance is it not a low number. If I don't know, then I can assume I have boxset number 0002 :-)

Why aren't you opening your box sets? I assumed they wouldn't be worth that much since they are re-issues etc... I have most of mine framed and hung in various locations round the flat.

Some collectors hope the value will increase later.

I don't see the point in keeping things in mint condition. I take care of the vinyl records I collect - but the reason I collect them is to enjoy them, not to lock them away! It's like when you're in a second hand record shop, the records that have obviously seen a bit of wear and tear (within reason) are always much more appealing than the extortionate pristine ones.
Or am I just weird?

It says on the main page that this is available at Virgin Megastores in the U.S. Has anyone actually purchased one there? I don't see it listed on the Virgin Megastore website.

Personally, it's got nothing to do with value. I collect Smiths/Mozza items that have to be in mint condition, so to have something still sealed is a bonus. My own curiosity means that I'll end up buying another boxset after the Christma holidays just to open it and peek inside.

I did and downloaded all the mp3s. :) once you enter the code you must register with Rhino and after that you're allowed to download the songs.
By the way I absolutely adore the live version of meat is murder :)

Holy Shit! I just tried to order mine here in Vegas, and the girl told me it would be $83 bucks for the set, is that accurate? I thought they were cd's, not vinyls?

The title of the thread clearly states that 7 inch VINYL boxset.
No Smiths CD single boxset was released in 2008.
In the States Virgin Megastore also sell them:

I love vinyl :) I don't know ... maybe because I started listening when vinyls were still around - it brings me back to my childhood/adolescence - I just love it - bought one a couple of years ago to listen to my old records, but now I find myself buying vinyl again :) - plus, some of these new albuns come with mp3 downloads!! - that's just perfect for me :guitar:

Hello everyone :) I came here to ask something about the boxset. I ordered mine before christmas and it arrived on Saturday (no. 03549), and looking through them I found that on the Heaven Knows record, the label is pressed halfway across the surface :( Is anyone else's like this, or do I have a wee rarity on my hands?
Thanks for any info you can give :)

Ive checked mine and its as normal as normal can be :) i guess yours effects the play of the record, and thats not a good thing. "you brought the box set.... it came on saturday......... heaven knows your misrible now.... its been in the post to long u said....and....wonky lables.... god knows iam stressed " sorry ive had a beer or 3 :) u might want to take a picture send it to rhino and get them to send u a 100% perfect copy and keep the wobberly one:) if they ask for it back say u will send but dont! :D these things should be checked before the boxes are sealed! unless morrissey got rhino to do it on purpose, the lucky person whos box it was in will have morrissey come to there house with a signed copy and a big wet kiss! let us know how u get on(with rhino i mean) :)

I purchased mine today from Amoeba Records in Hollywood, CA. I recieved #396 which is pretty good! I'm listening to the records right now and they sound a lot better than the CD versions. I love the cover art and have already framed the poster and put the pins on various jackets. The best song is defenitely the live version of Meat Is Murder. I didn't even debate about buying this. Although it almost cost me $100.00, I know I would have regreted it for the rest of my life if I didn't buy it when I had the chance. For those that "don't understand why people collect vinyl"...all I have to say is that you haven't TRULY listened to a song until you experience it in analog mode. The sounds are so much crisper and you will hear instruments you never even thought were in the song. CD's are okay and MP3's are ok for your iPod for when you're in the gym. But nothing, NOTHING beats the sound you get when place that record on your turntable and hear that snap...crackle...pop...and BAM the song just hits your ear drums like never before.

I think I'm the only one not to get a promo CD which was really the main reason for ordering on the off chance I'd be lucky. Not too impressed as the track listing sheet is torn in half and the Still Ill label has bubbled and fallen off. Not the highest quality box set I've ever seen ! Bugger !
Don't feel too bad about it, I didn't get one either. I'm not disappointed though, as the set is wonderful.
