Much to my surprise, I ran across one today in an art textbook ("Living With Art," 6th ed.), in amongst the Leonardos, Van Goghs, Japanese woodcuts, and Greek statues:

Yes, it's really about the artist/designer who created the image, but....Where is the most unexpected place you've seen or heard a Morrissey reference?

I was watching SportsCenter awhile back and the announcer was doing a basketball game. He said that some player (i forget which team he was on) was to his team "like Johnny Marr was to The Smiths." That was freakin' awesome! :D
And last week I was at a mall in Sandusky and they played "Suedehead" over the PA system. That struck me as both strange and unexpected. It came right after "With Arms Wide Open" by Creed (seriously).

Funny you should mention this because i had a similar experience with "Sports Center" only not with The Smiths or Moz but with my other favorite band Depeche Mode... Not too long ago my dad was watching Sports Center and he called me to watch because the guy said something about Depeche Mode. Sure enough he used a line from a song to explain something about a team! I thought it was the strangest thing! Someone at Sports Center has good taste in music :D

Oh, so he's some pivotal player who's suddenly going to walk off and leave his team in the lurch?

Hmmm... that's funny. A couple weeks ago I came across an Art textbook featuring the Viva Hate session by Anton Corbjon in the contrast section. I'll try to dig up a scan.

Probably not, unfortunately. If Kilby wouldn't have left his show, he'd probably have Moz on again to sing the new songs. He may have even had him backstage to spin the Price Is Right wheel! :)

A friend pointed this out to me having recognised the cover of hatfull from one of my t-shirts. There is a japanese manga called Beck, and the american anime production 'BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad' has a sketch of the cover of hatfull of hollow wedged in with a random montage of images that run alongside the credits and it looks like about 1/4 of morrisseys head also gets a look in.

I'm 100% sure. That is indeed the title of the chapter. It's a reference that Spud makes when he's at a party and there's a girl he fancies but he's too shy to approach her. He quotes some of the lyrics and explains how they relate to his situation. My scanner's knackered though so I shall type it out for you. (Not the entire chapter, not on your nelly lol! Just the relevant paragraphs.) :)
Here goes:
"Spud's muddled brain turns to sex. Eveyone seemed to bag off at the party, everyone except him. He really fancies a ride. His problem is that he is too shy when straight or sober, and too incoherent when stoned or drunk, to make an impression on women. He currently has a thing about Nicola Hanlon, whom he thinks looks a bit like Kylie Minogue.
A few months ago, Nicola had been talking to him as they walked from a party at Sighthill to one at Wester Hailes. They had been having a good crack, becoming detached from the rest of the group. She had been very responsive, and Spud had chatted freely, high on speed. In fact, she seemed to be hanging on his every word. Spud wanted to never get to that party, wishing that they could just go on walking and talking. They went down into the underpass and Spud thought that he should try to put his arm around Nicola. Then a passage from a Smiths' song, one he'd always liked called: 'There Is A Light That Never Goes Out', came into his head:
and in the darkened underpass
I thought Oh God my chance has come at last
but then a strange fear gripped me
and I just couldn't ask
Morrissey's sad voice summed up his feelings. He didn't put his arm around Nicola, and his attempts to chat her up were half-arsed after that. Instead, he jacked up in a bedroom with Rents and Matty, enjoying blissful freedom from the anxiety of wondering whether or not he'd get off with her."
Poor old Spud, eh?

A few weeks ago I saw an article about a blogger who was snubbed by Steve Jobs on the show floor at MacWorld. Seems he called her rude and someone in his group laughed at her when she asked to take a photo. The headline on her blog: "I was looking for a Jobs and then I found a Jobs, heaven knows I'm miserable now." It was unexpected and made me laugh.

The band PISTOL OPERA have an AMAZING song called "I Know It's Over." It sounds NOTHING like the Smiths classic, but it DOES feature a repeated refrain of "Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head" at the end, so it's an obvious tribute!
They also have a song called "Daddy Was a Disco Dancer" (sounds a bit like "Death of a Disco Dancer", eh?), and one of their new tunes I have a bootleg of (called "Ghost Song") starts with the line "Hello, I am the ghost of troubled Joe." They must be huge Smiths/Moz fans!

This is not a reference to Morrissey but I thought I'd share it because it made me think of "The Hand That Rocks The Cradle" and "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" (which, in my private interpretation which I don't expect anyone else to agree with, is about his mother):
O night without objects. O obtuse window outward, o carefully closed doors; arrangements from long ago, taken over, accredited, never quite understood. O stillness in the staircase, stillness from adjoining rooms, stillness up high against the ceiling. O mother: o you only one, who shut out all this stillness, long ago in childhood. Who take it upon yourself, saying: don't be afraid, it is I. Who has the courage all in the night yourself to be this stillness for that which is afraid and perishing with fear. You strike a light, and already the noise is you. And you hold the light before you and say: It is I; don't be afraid. And you put it down, slowly, and there is no doubt: it is you; you are the light around these familiar intimate things, that are there without afterthought, good, simple, unambiguous. And when there is restlessness somewhere in the wall, or a step on the floor: you only smile, smile, smile transparent against a light background into the fearful face that looks searchingly at you, as if you were the one and in the secret with every half-sound, in concert and in agreement with it. Does any power equal your power among the rulers of the earth? See, kings lie and stare, and the teller of tales cannot distract them. On the blissful breasts of their favorite mistress terror creeps over them and makes them shaky and lifeless. But you, you come and hold the monstrous thing behind you, and are in front of it altogether; not like a curtain it can throw open here or there. No, as if you had overtaken it at the call that needed you. As if you had come far ahead of anything that may yet happen, and had behind you only your hasting hither, your eternal path, the flight of your love.
-- Rainer Maria Rilke, The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge, Tr. M.D. Herter Norton.

Why, whenever anybody raises a question, do you immediately jump in and say "Woo, somebody asked a vaguely similair question nine years ago"? It slows the conversation down and generally makes people feel dejected. You can be a real buzz killer some times.

The source, YOU, are the buzzkill as far as I can tell. I'm asking you to consider yourself as such. I never said he'd sold out.
Well, I can't say for sure I never have, if only there were some forum memebr who remembered every single post ever made by every single forum member, who could some how manage to confirm or deny whether I did or did not ever say that Morrissey had sold out.

Yeah, I'm sure Morrissey would be extremely turned off by my presently luscious and ample bosom. I'm sure he would be the last in line to go "num, num, num" to my peachy nipples. Soft. Warm. Inviting. Yes, Morrissey is disgusted by these things. At least he has his carrot sticks!

I feel that I am quite vulnerable and that's quite good enough because I wouldn't want to be thought of as Tarzan or Jane or whatever! I'd rather be thought of as someone quite sensitive who could understand women in a way that wasn't really sexual. I hate men who can only see women in a sexual way - to me that's criminal and I want to change that. I don't recognise such terms as heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual and I think it's important that there's someone in pop music who's like that. These words do great damage, they confuse people and they make people feel unhappy so I want to do away with them.

What touching words. Bollocks of course. But touching none the less.
I realise it's going to be difficult to come across as anything other than a chauvanist here, and I appreciate that what he was sayig there probably helped quite a lot of confused and scared people (which can only be a good thing), but it didn't really answer the question did it. What the interviewer should have followed that up with is -
Ok Steven, that's admirable, but do you fancy men?
Who said anything about only seeing women sexually, obviously he isn't sexually attracted to ALL women, and he doesn't necessarilly only see those that he is attracted to in a sexual way, but that wasn't the question. The question was clearly - Do you find men attractive? Which is possibly none of the interviewer's business, but skating around it will only perpetuate that kind of question. Not necessarily fair, but that's the nature of the business.
They should get Jeremy Paxman to interview him.

Siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh. Yes he does find men attractive but that doesn't make him gay. Round and round we go.
"Yes. I feel completely open. If I met somebody tomorrow, male or female, and they loved me and I loved them, I would openly proclaim that I loved them, regardless of what they were. I think people should be loved whatever their gender, whatever their age. I am open to everything. I accept that my experience is different from that of most men. But I feel reasonably normal. I don't feel like a freak. My world is bigger. I never lived in a small town with small morals. I don't want to take drugs. I don't, so far as I am aware, want to take part in activities such as group sex. I'm actually a reasonably conservative, boring person."

A wrestling magazine in the UK, "Power Slam", has a Smiths reference in one of their articles this month. It basically talks about comedy storylines in wrestling and the author says something along the lines of, "as The Smiths wrote in the 1980's, that joke isn't funny any more".

I remember once, driving to the airport, my dad was listening to this random AM talk radio station that was a lot of static, but in between every segment of the show, they played a different Smiths or Morrissey song.
On "Malcolm In The Middle" once, they're at school and this popular girl is hanging a poster for the prom, and Malcolm starts bitching about it to her, and she says something along the lines of Well when you and your loser friends are locked in your room listening to Morrissey on Saturday night, I will be having fun at the prom blah blah blah something like that. It wasn't that strange but still unexpected. It made me chuckle.

I am so embarrassed. I actually spent last summer watching Rock Of Love AND The Pick Up Artist. I am going to hell. Bret Michaels is no gift to mankind.
I've done the same. :p
The Pick Up Artist was just blatantly horrible though, hahaha.

LOL, you've got that right. (we would make some amazing teevee!) The Pick Up Artist was so horrible. Like a car crash. But I kept watching. I can't even think of their dorky names. I can tell you that if a guy who looked like a pimp with eyeliner and black nail polish came on to me, I wouldn't be too pleased. I felt sorry for that 40 year old virgin.

On The Soup they were talking about Bret Micheal's Rock of Love show, and said that now that he has found "love" another rocker will need to take his place.
So they said that Morrissey should have his own reality dating show, named Oh, You're Not Gonna Love Me Anyway.
:D
If it were done well (with Morrissey's input and aesthetic), I'd so watch that. Hell, I'd be ON that. "Yes, I will love youuuu, Mozzy!" <- That's me as a prospective Moz-luvah.
My husband would probably have issues with that though.

the weirdest one i'd seen was the morrissey t-shirt on reno 911
http://www.morrissey-solo.com/articles/05/06/16/072259.shtml?tid=1
when i saw it, i wanted so badly to tell someone about it, but couldn't think of anyone who would care, hahaha
Hah, same thing happened to me..I was like MORRISSEY,...oh noone cares.
The weirdest reference for me was on MYST3K, when a guy was taking money out of his pocket and he had a quiff, and the narrarators were like " Oh look it's morrissey, he can't find his money, all those condoms in the way.."
It was on the episode " The mysterious creatures, who stopped living and became Zombies..something like that.

I seem to remember another Moz reference on that show (besides the whole Tupperware sketch, of course)--during the end credits of one of the movies (can't remember which one, sorry), someone had the last name Morrissey. The joke was, "Morrissey was involved in this production? No wonder it was so depressing."

this hasnt particulary do with moz but with one of his songs "picadilly palare "to be specific and its not really strange but i couldnt find another thread of mozreferences not being "strange" ....i was in berlin this weekend walking home form the concert i attended and go through one of the "gay area=meaning ="a lot a of gay pubs"
near the tubesation entrnace i saw quite a few handsome young man standing and waiting
didnt thought immidiately they were rent boys until a man in his late thirties came up to one chatted for a few seconds and left with him...so when i walk home after witnessing this i couldnt get "picadilly palare" out of my head "on the rack i was..easy meat ..but a reasonably good buy"

One of the authors befriended a Brazilian graffitti gang in Rio de Janeiro. Of the experience, he wrote, "While we were drunk, we were able to communicate well. We just talked about our favorite Bob Dylan and Morrissey songs."

haha i had a similar experience.last year..i was sitting in a very very posh bar ...
with a few "guys "(actulally girls but you can refer to girls as guys too? right?)
and they played music(mostly lounge and muzak.you now that kind of music no one would be bothered of)... then" there is a light that never goes out" came on but on such a low volume i couldnt only make out the ending of "There is a light"
i was stretching my head a lot(must be looking pretty funny to try to hear more) to be able to hear better and waited for another smiths song..i couldnt help myself to go to the bar and compliment the girl behind the bar on playing the smiths song and asked her to play it again. after a while they played "how soon is now "but again too low in volume to really hear it..I still wasnt satisfied so
i had the effrontery to ask them to play there is a light again...what they did -thank god...after that back to muzak .....
the girl behind the bar
behind bars=that actually does mean that someone is in prison,right?..ahh that funny english language.....;)

I was on the tram in Manchester last night. A mother and daughter were sat in front of us (swigging from a bottle of Rose -classy). They were fixing their make up and singing very loudly all the words to First in the Gang to Die. Over and over, until the mother (I'm assuming it was the girls mother of course) got on her mobile and phoned the pub they were going to "tell the Karaoke to have "Hector" ready for when we get there in 10 minutes"!
I wonder what they'll do next week?

well one of the songs he does is called "in the morning before work"
its not bad.
and it had this lyric in it:
"I listen to my same old cd's
New order & Morrissey
But you already know that because you used to ride with me
I thought i'd be singing a different tune by now
But this song about you keeps coming out"

Probably it has already been mentioned before but Art Brut make a Moz reference in their song “Moving to L.A.”
There's not much glam about the English weather
There's nothing left keeping us together
Sunshine on a rainy day
Makes me want to move away
I think I've got it sorted
I'm going to get myself deported
I'm considering a move to LA
(He's considering a move to LA)
(x3)
Hang around with Axl Rose
Buy myself some brand new clothes
Everything is gonna be just fine
I hear the murder rate is in decline
Get me a southern accent
Maybe grab a piece of action
I'm considering a move to LA
(He's considering a move to LA)
(x3)
When I get off the plane
The first thing I'm gonna do is
Strip naked to the waist
And ride my Harley Davidson
Up and down Sunset street
I may even get a tattoo
My problems are never gonna find me
I'm not sending one letter
or even a postcard back
I'm drinking Henessey
With Morrissey
On a beach
Out of reach
Somewhere very far away
I'm considering a move to LA
(He's considering a move to LA)

Also, I don't think this really counts, but once my georgaphy teacher used the phrase 'six months is a long time' and I jumped and announced, "Oh my God, I love that song!" It was like a reflex! She didn't get it, and neither did anyone else in the classroom...it must have looked really funny to a non-Smiths fan, considering she was talking about juvenile deliquency and stuff. The first time I saw Morrissey in person was at the Greatwestern Forum in Inglewood. Until I saw him live I vowed to myself to track him down and somehow make contact with him in Manchester. I was just a girl, I knew nothing about anything, I just knew I wanted to be his friend. Today I helped my friend Emily prepare her kindergarten class for the upcoming school year. I was completely astonished to find that that school has a magnificent view of the Forum, the very entrance where we parked and hiked up the ramp to take our seats at one of my first concerts ever, my first concert of the man whose voice to me sounded like heaven. Sorting through buckets of crayons, wooden blocks, alphabet cards, a flood of memories of beginnings. Then to walk outside and see the forum, another beginning that's difficult to describe. I had to hold back the tears when we pulled out onto Prairie and made a left on Manchester Avenue. Turns out we did meet in Manchester after all. Sort of. Wonderful.

Not so much a reference, but there's a banner on the wall at the school where I work that reads, "Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference." I hope I never have to explain the little smile that crosses my face whenever I see it...

There was some programme a while ago that was about people being ashamed of going to the doctor's (I think it was on Channel 4), and that had 'Shyness is nice, but/ Shyness can stop you...' play suddenly partway through. I think I shouted frantically in German when that happened (thankfully in my own living room:)).
Welcome Mrs. Moz! Do you have the t-shirt? :)

There's a film called Shaun of the Dead, and there's this sequence where they're flicking through the TV channels and all the words are connecting together. So it starts off on the news, where it says something like, 'It would appear that the dead have come alive. There's...' and then they flick over onto 'Panic on the streets of London!' It would have made my day if I'd been into Morrissey when I first saw the film.

Hahaha, I'm not sure if that thing with the names on the windscreens was very widespread or not in the early-/mid-nineties, because I've seen it in a Blur video too.
Last year at school my form tutor would say 'Still ill?' if someone had been away for more than a day when he was calling the register.

I always point out Smiths references (possible ones) in Coronation Street... everyone keeps telling me they're just Northern-isms! I was about to point it out when someone said "Hand in glove", but then I remembered it was from 1971!:p

I've only ever gone out of my especially to see Eastenders once! It was the Stella (Or maybe wrong name) storyline... the wedding day!
Edit: Oh, once more actually... the end of the Who Shot Phil? story also!

I hate Eastenders. Maybe it's set too close to where I live.
I just liked it when they played the Smiths in the background.

I'm not sure if this has already been posted...sorry if it was! I bought the August 2008 issue of Q Magazine this week and saw this in an interview with Mark Ronson:
Q Mag: Pop music's still so tribal. Mark, your cover album provoked a lot of aggro. Especially your cover of The Smiths' Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before.
Mark Ronson: People thought I was trying to improve certain artists. I wasn't. I was bored by the music out there and decided to re-record some of my favourite songs to play in clubs. I got beef for some of the versions. The Smiths version was the worst. I got a MySpace message from some kid saying, "I can't believe you did that to a Morrissey/Marr song. I'm going to stab you." Now whatever his relationship with Morrissey and Marr is that I've violated, that's scary. I don't mind people saying, "You did a shitty job." But Morrissey fans...they're different.

Reading the past few posts just reminded me of something... Last week while I was at my parent's house they had on Keith Oberman's show, he used the term "Hand in Glove." He was referring to two things that go together and the phrase I had always heard was "they go hand in hand" not "hand in glove." so immediately my ears perked up and I asked my Mom if that was a common phrase as I'd only heard it in the Smiths song. She said she'd never heard of it. IS it a common phrase? Am just illiterate?

I don't know if it's common, but I found this (http://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/glove):
hand in glove (British, American & Australian, American)
if one person or organization is working hand in glove with another, they are working together, often to do something dishonest. It was rumoured at the time that some of the gangs were working hand in glove with the police.

On the weekend I was out in the city (Melbourne, Australia) and it was around 3am and we just left a bar and were stumbling drunk towards the nigh rider buses when I swear to god I could hear Girlfriend in a Coma being played ... so I dragged everyone along to follow the sound and turns out that there is an all night chip/burger shop called Lord of the Fries on a street corner and they had the best of the Smiths cd blasting out ... needless to say they got my business and a thumbs up, but honestly to hear any smiths/morrissey reference in Australia is very rare so this was a real surprise. :)

I was reading Gourmet magazine in a cafe while waiting for a friend and saw a review of a restaurant named 'Oscillate Wildly', which is in Newtown, Sydney.
http://www.smh.com.au/news/restaurant-reviews/oscillate-wildly/2007/01/23/1169330874081.html
Although, the review I read of it in the magazine said "...named after The Smiths only instrumental track..."
As for The Smiths/Morrissey not being popular in Australia - I think they were but it seems now a lot of the population are either surprised that Morrissey is still going. At most indie nights you will hear This Charming Man & thats about it!

Well he's absolutely unheard of on the radio and charts, all his albums have to be imported ... basically no advertisement whatsoever, you may come across the occasional reference in a music article or maybe one of the smaller radio stations might play a track here or there but otherwise nothing ... which is a shame because when he came out here he packed out The Forum in Melbourne (about 2000 people) so the following is there, just rare.

I once heard a comedy programme on the radio (can't remember which one) saying that Morrissey has begun work on a series of children's books, the first of which is called "Little Annie visits the Slaughterhouse". There was also something about deckchairs, but I can't remember that much about it, I was half asleep, only woke up when they said "Morrissey"... not that I'm obsessed or anything.
