Moz is Algonquin for moose,literally "twig eater" :D

Coinsidentally in Japanese mozu means a shrike which isn't too bad.
However, I never call Morrissey Moz because it's started by NME in early 90s.

Yes, but even his friends call him "Moz" now. I think he's grown fond of it.

I once asked Boz about the similarity of their nicknames -- If he didn't find it to be quite a coincidence. He thought that the "Moz" thing happened after they'd met. I showed him evidence of it being his nickname before they'd met -- sometime during late Smithdom. This shocked him. I got to feel all speshul for enlightening Boz. Tee hee. XD
