what is the most overrated song in Moz's catalogue, overrated either by the masses, critics or (more likely) "hardcore" fans?
if you choose "other", please indicate what song yuve chosen with a post.
and before people start getting their back up, there's only one or two songs that iwould truly criticize, "Ganglord" and "Life Is A Pigsty".

If I could, I would vote 1,000 times for How Soon Is Now. Having seen him eight times in the last three years, I would be happy to never hear this song again. It made me ill to see it get the largest reaction at each and every concert. As for the studio version, anytime I play Hatful of Hollow or Meat is Murder I run for the skip button.
I hate how it has become emblematic of the "alternative Eighties" simply because it was fairly popular here in the States. Its ubiquity has had a deleterious effect on its artistic posterity, IMO. There are so many other Smiths songs that unfairly get overlooked.
Cheers,
Jamie

I voted for Life Is A Pigsty.
I just don't get it, the music is flat and boring, the lyrics say absolutely nothing to me. I was so frustrated when it was chosen for the 'Get Moz in the charts' download thingy, and it just confounds me when I see so many people name it as their favourite song from Ringleader.

Well I like the minimal change in the words because it gradually builds up and his voice becomes more emotive with each repetition. I love the song.
I voted Ganglord...just because it's a b-side

I was tempted to go for "Ganglord", which is very average, but then I saw "Suedehead" on the list. It's a decent enough single, but its huge score in Houdini's Top 100 poll is really quite baffling.

Ganglord, without a shadow of a doubt. Yawn.
I see that (at the time of this writing) one person has voted for Lost. Who and why!? Lost is one of Morrissey's best ever songs, although I'd say I like Spencer's composition more than Moz's lyrics.
The fact that Lost was never released is so frustrating to me. It would have been a Top 10 hit for sure (something which Morrissey could only dream of at the time (1997)) and I also think it would have gained a lot more fans.
But 8 years on Moz certainly made up for it by releasing Redondo Beach/There Is A Light as a single. Not!
If there's one thing I'd change about our Moz it's his selection of singles.

It is! You have to understand where I'm coming from. Yes it is a great song. But it really gets me when people say, "Oh, TCM is the GREATEST Smiths song ever. Along, with HSIN." And I've heard this unlessly.
There are far greater tracks. It doesn't peak with TCM. I'm just looking at it as a whole.
Just because it's overrated doesn't make it a bad song. There are no bad Morrissey songs.
Unless it's You Must Please Remember. hahahah!

becos ifeel imust:
"Everyday Is Like Sunday"
-not overrated one bit- an absolute classic- but since it is one of those songs that everything is always compared back to, iwouldnt be surprised to see some finding it overrated (they would be wrong, but iwouldnt be surprised).
"First Of The Gang To Die"
-overrated, especially the studio version with the tacky sample- how this is the song that spurred on the massive commercial comeback is beyond me- it's alright, but certainly not great.
"Ganglord"
-overrated and juste plain silly- all the people over the moon for this song really hav no taste or sense of what has made Morrissey great.
"How Soon Is Now?"
-a great song, but probably overrated, and then unjustly underrated by those who are simply sick of how overrated it is- it's a vicious circle.
"I Know It's Over"
-not really overrated other than by those who absolutely obsess over the song, of which there are many- still an absolute classic
"Jack The Ripper"
-slightly overrated- a great track, but its not so over and above as many make it out to be
"Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me"
-not overrated at all until someone like David Bowie or Johnny Marr call it the best thing The Smiths did- then it becomes a little overrated, depsite being absolutely brilliant
"Late Night, Maudlin Street"
-slightly overrated- many would put it alongside EILS and "Suedehead" during the VH era, and really it doesnt come close- good song though.
"Life Is A Pigsty"
-vastly overrated- how people can ignore the absolutely dire lyrics in this song is unbelievable.
"Lost"
-overrated by those who think it was robbed of being a top10 single- its not a top10 single, it would not hav saved Maladjusted (dropping "He Cried", "Papa Jack" and "Sorrow Will Come In The End" would hav)- it's juste a good song.
"The Never-Played Symphonies"
-when it first came out, no one could shut up about how great a song it was, how it shouldve been on the album, how it was one of the greatest songs he'd done in a decade- it's juste a good b-side.
"Nobody Loves Us"
-another b-side like "Lost" and TNPS that has become so overrated for having been a b-side- it's a good song, a great song even, but it's not one of his very best as so many make it out to be- it's not so much better (or better at all) than much of SG.
"Suedehead"
-same as EILS, not at all overrated, but due to it always be cited as one of the very best songs he's written and having been the first solo single, ican see some people coming out to say it's overrated (again, they would be wrong).
"There Is A Light That Never Goes Out"
-an absolutely brilliant song, but often made out to be the greatest song ever written despite the fact that it's not necessarily the best song on the album- hard to say it's overrated, but it's like when people call The Smiths overrated, you know?

[he played it live too much that I can't stand the song anymore]
the song is too long, only the last verse is good
the screaming of Margareth O Mara and Morrissey's ohwoh is getting
on yer nerves if yer a long time fan
it aint bad, but its definately overrated, cause Morrissey claimed ones
that this was his most imortant/best song he recorded, oh my, I'd like

Overrated?
Trouble Loves Me - (Hate that song)
Dear God Please Help Me - (Basically Trouble Loves Me Part II)
Jack the Ripper (Get over it already - Morrissey throwing himself into the P.O.V. of a serial killer does not make it the greatest song ever.)

I think this poll and houdini's daily top 100 polls have shown us that every song he has ever penned sparks some debate. Almost every single song will have diehard fans and many of the same songs will have fierce detractors.
Its quite remarkable really - do you think there is any other artist with such a wide range of songs, covering so many musical styles and with lyrics discussing almost every topic imaginable? Theres bound to be people for and against everything.
For me i cannot understand anyone who thinks November spawned a monster, Life is a pigsty, Jack the ripper, I know its over, There is a light... and, god forbid, Last Night i dreamt....... as being overrated - i really think you must be mad to cite any of these masterpieces but it clearly happens! I am not a huge fan of the maladjusted and southpaw years but i know there are people on here who would die defending those tracks.

I find it strange how many people come on here and seem to have little (if any) good to say about his back catalogue. i know he had nothing to do with it; i was referring to the recent resurgence of synth strings in moz's music, which encompasses YATQ, ROTT, and the tours of each, which correct me if i'm wrong farrell was picked up for the YATQ tour.
i was aware he didn't do YATQ; but while we're on the subject, who DID the keys for that? anyone specific or a studio-player?

I love most of the songs from the list, and some of them can IMO never be overrated - I Know It's Over, Last Night I Dreamt..., There Is A Light, Jack The Ripper...
Ganglord is definitely the weakest song on the list, and I don't get some people's obsession with Lost and The Never-Played Symphonies, but I never had the impresssion they were that highly rated anywhere except on Moz Solo.
I voted for First Of The Gang To Die, because I've heard it some 1000 times on radio and in clubs, more than any other Moz song ever, and while it's a good song, it never was one of my absolute favourites, so after the first 100 times I got a bit fed up with it...
On second thought, I should have voted "other", because Morrissey's most overrated song ever must be "You Have Killed Me". I never even liked it, and I've heard this one played, well, not as many times as FOTGTD, but very often as well...and is a worse song than FOTGTD.

Unless it's You Must Please Remember. hahahah!
I love You Must Please Remember! :(

I chose Maudlin Street. It's never done anything for me, the tune is just too unmemorable.
I picked I Know It's Over because, although I adore some of the lyrics and like the song very much as a whole, it has never done anything special to me. To most people it seems to be THE song but not for me...
I'm sorry. But if these songs don't do anything for you guys then I'm wondering if you even grasp the idea that Morrissey has been trying to convey.
And i'm not saying this because I "LOVE, LOVE, LOVE" these songs like that, but it's true. It's Morrissey pouring out his heart. These songs can be liked unconditionally by the whole world and STILL not be overrated. Given that we understand Morrissey and his perspectives of life.

I vote FOTGTD.
It's just so boring.
Maybe because it's been played to death.
HSIN is quite monotonous, but I think that adds to it's appeal - I have fond memories of the song.
How can people say that I Know It's Over and Now My Heart Is Full are overrated! Surely the latter is underrated!

I completely agree with HSIN, tho I voted Dear God, Please Help Me. I must be missing something with this song  Just 'meh'... I always skip it. Give me Come Back to Camden anyday. Or Ganglord :guitar:
You just made me run off to listen to Dear God, Please Help me - I love that song.
I do not understand the messianic fervor that surround "Lost" and "The Never Played Symphonies." Both are good songs, but people go bonkers over both.

I think the two hundred plus Morrissey/Smiths songs that I listen to on a loop everyday have got the point across.
If you read it correctly, you'll notice it was the tune rather the lyrics that I've never connected with in a major way. That's not to say I don't like the song, just because something's overrated doesn't necessarily mean it's bad.

I listened to it again and clearly the strings are real. Which means it's official, TTAAOTP is one of my favorites. Now please continue with your discussion I so rudely interrupted. Sorry.
Well the main string part in TTAAOTP is from shoshkovich's (sp?) 5th, but some of the string parts toward the end of the song are not, so i'm assuming these actually are SYNTH additions to the song. (sorry to break that to you). likewise, it seems we rank among the very few who find TTAAOTP one of the more dominant moz songs. i could die happily if he played it live again with boz and the boys...
