I could have sworn that original speculation was that this would be a compilation of live performances of such songs considered as 'the greatest hits,' which if said is indeed the case, wouldn't make too much of a bad thing to listen to, as it would be veritably a live album but with studio cuts of the two new songs. But I must have misread something along the way, because it seems the mix of live and studio on a greatest hits would be an unapproachable idea to a record company (even though I suppose Reprise did it with 'Burglary Years').
But I don't think 'Redondo Beach' was ever recorded in the studio; >shrugs< I did enjoy the live version on 'Earl's Court,' my personal opinion is it surpasses Patti Smiths, but I wouldn't want to cause any waves...

See I think people forget that greatest hits albums are for casual fans or people who arent familiar with the artist and with that being the case I think this album will be good for aquanting people with modern Morrissey tracks. For the rest of us just use itunes to download the recorded version of All You Need is Me and THPGU and pray they dont make it on the next album because we have all heard them countless times so far

What did everyone expect? He already has a Greatest Hits album, the only "new" material is from YATQ and ROTT.

I'm a little surprised "Don't Make Fun of Daddy's Voice" or "Ganglord" didn't make it instead of reaching way back for "The Last of the Famous..."

I just think the days of purchasing the $11.99 Import CD Single with the two bonus tracks is over. The record companies need to wake up. Yes, I understand that Greatest Hits are for casual fans. My problem with that is that Morrissey doesn't have casual fans. You either love him or hate him. He can't keep jamming his fan base with these re-issues. Many (most) of us are not going to buy them when we already forked over $ for the songs already. In the day of iTunes, sorry I'm buying "All You Need Is Me" an "That's How People Grow Up" that's it. Sorry Mozzer!

If this is true, it's one of the worst "Greatest Hits" albums I've ever seen. A load of recent singles which fans will already own, and few real hooks for a casual listener looking to find out more about Morrissey.

I'm downloading "All You Need Is Me" and leaving it there.

There will be a lot of casual music fans who will pick this album up in the UK. That's who it's aimed at, people that have liked a few singles but haven't bought his albums.

True, but the album isn't really giving those listeners the "best of" Morrissey, either. The fact that "I Just Want To See the Boy Happy", "Redondo Beach" (!!!), "The Youngest Was The Most Loved", "That's How People Grow Up" and "In the Future When All's Well" are deemed worthy of a "greatest hits" album is laughable.

Look at the Rhino compilation by comparison:

The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get
Suedehead
Everyday Is Like Sunday
Glamorous Glue
Do Your Best And Don't Worry
November Spawned A Monster
The Last Of The Famous International Playboys
Sing Your Life
Hairdresser On Fire
Interesting Drug
We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful
Certain People I Know
Now My Heart Is Full
I Know It's Gonna Happen Someday
Sunny
Alma Matters
Hold On To Your Friends
Sister I'm A Poet
Disappointed
Tomorrow
Lost

I know which one I'd suggest to a casual listener.

The new one is basically a "recent singles" compilation, with a couple of older tracks. Fair enough, maybe - but I do think they've missed a trick here by not putting a few more older songs on it, or at least a couple of good album tracks from Quarry or Ringleader.

Yes.

That's why there are 'best of' and why there are 'greatest hits'. They are different things.

Best of Morrissey has a 'better' track listing as it has album and b-side tracks such as Now My Heart Is Full and Lost. This is a 'greatest hits' so, unsurprisingly, has his biggest hits on it.

And this CD is not being released for 'us' anyway, it's for casual music fans and to try and boost interest for Decca before the new album later in the year.

Finally a voice of reason, amidst all the, frankly, quite silly remarks here. (Where is Lost?, where is Ganglord?... Please!)
This is quite a predictable tracklist for a Greatest Hits, the only surprise being the inclusion of a live-song (although it was admittedly one of his 13 biggest hits) and the inclusion of Boy Happy and In The Future over Interesting Drug or November.

I'm sure Kewpie will link the thread but there seems an olive branch of a limited edition live CD being released in Japan (and maybe elsewhere? Doubtful on past form but you never know....)

Have to say as a longstanding fan, "30 years man and boy", I have managed to avoid the majority of Mozzer's solo compilations with the exception of the wonderful Bona Drag.

Bit worried that the live set will follow this GH tracklisting due to Morrissey promoting a "new" LP. Which I would be very disappointed about.

I doubt whether this will sell more than 20,000. Can't see the older fans getting it, possibly the completists for the Morrissey/Decca label (tragic but who am I to say?) and the younger fans would surely have the majority of stuff in downloads anyway.

As far as a new compilation for casual fans its not too bad. My only gripe would be why November is left off while other older hits are on there.

The live disc will be the selling point for me, his recent live sets have been brilliant.

I wouldn't have bought it no matter what was on it so the tracklisting means nothing to me.

I don't understand the moaning about him ripping his fans off with this. It's not for real fans. It's for people who aren't really bothered about Morrissey but would quite like a few of his songs to put on now and again. People who wouldn't bother with a whole album, but just want the songs they'll recognise.

I don't buy greatest hits of artists I really like. I buy them of artists I don't mind.

You're not comparing like with like.

This isn't aimed at people that buy the singles or albums. Just the opposite in fact. This is aimed at people who liked the singles but never would consider buying them because they aren't value for money.

As Worm said, Morrissey is seen as a classic artist, as part of the "canon". Many people will buy this just because of that. I don't go along with this idea that Morrissey is a love/hate figure for most people either. He is that for some people, but most people aren't really that passionate about music or Morrissey. They will just see this as an album with some catchy pop tunes on it.

Is he? I'll concede you're possibly right. I can see what you're saying. BUT.... music is so easy to come by and so disposable now, most casual listeners probably had You Are The Quarry for free and that, in the terms you are describing, as a casual music listener would suggest to me that the market for this Hits 5 CD (no Don't Mess With My Toot Toot or Frankie or Dress You Up!! Commercial suicide) is the person who listens to a CD twice. And thats being optimistic.

Hence there is no artistic integrity in this release. At all. Despite the obvious vainglorious cover. Which suggests something to me...

Yes, but...........The songs that are "chosen" to be released as singles are debateble to say the least. A 'best of' is subjective of course but a (this) 'greatest hits' gives just a crooked few of Morrissey's career.

Here are some songs that wer never released as a single

but even if he had delved into his back catalogue, serious fans would have the songs anyway, so does it matter that most of the tracks are off the last two albums

Its very difficult for me NOT to buy everything he releases. Its a religious thing. But this is testing my faith.

Ditto. It just doesn't seem like a tracklisting that has enough "classics" to please the old fans, and strikes me as mostly being ROTT anyway - which i certainly wouldn't use the word "greatest" about. Good, but not great.

Greatest hits/Best ofs are sort of starter packs for the new fan, I think in real-life application the term is interchangeable.

And like everyone's saying, don't most people just download individual songs and create their own best of now anyway?

Just my tuppenny. Eitherway, I'm spending my money on it. ;)

Since I Just Want to See the Boy Happy reached the same chart position as Alma Matters, I fail to see why the latter can't be included in the general release. It would certainly give a rounder picture to all phases of his solo career. Plus he has to foist a live version of the crap-ass former song on the extra disc, too.

Here's a quibble that no doubt others will pick up on: note that five of the eight songs are repeats of greatest hits tracks. Fittingly, there were four other solo songs played on the night that would have made nicer bonuses (Ganglord, You're Gonna Need Someone On Your Side, I've Changed My Plea To Guilty, and Disappointed). That would have ensured that the collection could have been "all things to everyone": singles retrospective for the "casual fan" (define how you will--I don't want to reopen the semantics wound) AND nice bonus live disc of album/B-side material fit for die-hards.

Could be better, could be worse...

Cheers,

Jamie
