New series on the BBC. It's basically Top of the Pops performances from different decades. The Smiths feature in the 80's one. The series starts on the 10th. The website doesn't say when the 80's one will be on. Look at the website for more info;)

Hmm, not Eastenders. Here's the TV schedule (http://www.bbcamerica.com/tvschedule.jsp). My stepdad's a subscriber. Makes him feel like he's still over there.

BBC i (press the Red button) has been previewing this series all week by showing 30mins shows on the 60s, 70s, 80s etc...

I watched the 80s one. The Smiths were on with This Charming Man from TotP. Stuart Macconie introduced them by saying they were his personal favourites.

If you look at the tracklistings on the BBC website http://www.bbc.co.uk/musictv/popbritannia/tracklisting/episode3/ The Smiths aren't listed.....bugger. Still the series looks interesting. Sandie Shaw is a featured artist in episode 2 http://www.bbc.co.uk/musictv/popbritannia/artists/episode2/

If today's "pop" were on trial, the verdict would be death.

You can catch these shows on the BBCi Player feature that's just been launched. After tonight's TV broadcast, it will be online for a week. It's been a pretty cool BBC4 season. The three previous "Pop On Trial" (naff title) shows were of interest too, but there were some glaring errors. The 1970s one featured scarcely any Abba, for example

Just the shadow on his nascent jowl, surely?

See their backdrop? Moz/Marr, Mercury and Adam Ant.

Oh good, Maconie & Sawyer love them, Sawyer especially. Fry, initially reticent, has to admit their greatness. Classic songwriting he says.
