Not Right in the Head

Utterly fantastic. One of the reasons why Louder Than Bombs was my favorite Smiths album for many years.

The music is mediocre but those lyrics? Sheer majesty!!! What teenager can't relate to them? "I know I'm unloveable... I don't have much in my life but take it, it's yours... I know that you would like me if only you could meet me..." etc. Best lines: "I wear black on the outside 'cause black is how I feel on the inside. And if I seem a little strange, well, that's because I AM." Oh so true. If the music were better it might rank a 10, but as it is, I'll give it an 8.

Amazing song! This used to be my anthem when I was a melodramatic teenager. :o:D If I ever got in a funk, I'd play it on loop. It's lyrics could be seen as depressing but for some reason I always found the melody and Moz's voice so comforting and soothing...and kind of uplifting in a way. Dunno why, maybe because of the hint of self acceptance and individuality in lines like "and if I seem a little strange, well that's because I am". Great stuff and definitely one of my favorite of their slower songs.

Brilliant stuff and a beautiful example of the sheer quality of the material that was written by Morrissey/Marr - and this was a B-side! I love the sound of the guitar at the beginning and the lyrics are just simply unique. We simply have to cling to the old dreams, don't we? 9 from Mal.

I always thought the "black on the outside" line was awkward. This is not Morrissey at his best but it comes from a time when even his lesser efforts were pretty good.

Solid 8 from me. Slightly clever lyrics.

Funny, this song, because somehow I rarely end up listening to it. But hearing it again now, it's actually very good. 8.

"message received loud and clear.."

I love this song. Recently rediscovered it and have been playing it a lot lately.

When I am feeling particularly sorry for myself, I love it even more. ;)

It's an 8 from me.

A lovely little song. 8 I was listening to it yesterday while I was walking home
I don't particurly like the line "I wear black on the outstide...", but I like "if I seem a little strange..." and "i don't have much in my life but take it..."

I love the outro music.

its one of the Smiths song that you kinda grow up with and identify with the low times and the difficult times of being a teenager / young adult.

if he hadnt written stuff like this who knows what would have happened!!!:)

aww I love this song..

I know I'm unloooveable yooou don't have to tell meeee..
and if I seem a little straaaange well that's because I am!

Not one of Marr's most complicated compositions but it's beautiful in it's simplicity and it compliments the lyrics well. Sort of like the musical equivalent of someone shrugging their shoulders if that makes sense..

Being a teenager, I relate to this very well! 10!

I used to not like this song but I later grew fond of it.

Oh i love this song and often find myself quoting lyrics form it. Love and can identify with these lines:
Oh ...
I know I'm unloveable
You don't have to tell me
I don't have much in my life
But take it - it's yours
I don't have much in my life
But take it - it's yours
Oh ...

he just toying with listeners on this . He's aware of how he appears and that the "untouchable" approach works . Playing on the mysterious vibe you get from moz. Its sumptuous. I remember listening to this for the first time and it was almost as if i saw this song coming after hearing most of other smiths stuff. Fits so nicely into the smiths catalogue. I wear black on the outside because black is how i feel on the inside. Description extremely fitting for when your feeling slightly drab or if you happen to be wearing black .

A 10 for me. Beautiful guitar, and simple but beautiful lyrics. This is definitely in my top 3 fave Smiths songs if not #1. I wish he'd start playing it live.

I give it a 9. I love the music. Johnny's guitar isn't awe-inspiring but it does give the song a sweetness it would otherwise lack.
