Isn't that what a scarf is?

Haaaaaaaaaa Miss Jones! Don't make it more complicated than it already is!!!

:p:p:p

(The scarf is so long it's currently knocking on my door!)

ok guys, place your bets: will Franzie finish before Christmas? I accept all currencies. let's make some money with knitting.:guitar:

I'm quite tempted to knit a scarf myself; just mindless stocking or garter stitch you don't have to glance away from the tv/pc to get on with....

I have a lot of blues and greys on 300-500g cones.

I also have this vintage pattern. I quite fancy the jacket if I can recreate the 1964 yarn with a boucle and 4-ply knitted together. I'll try a tension square later.

I also have the Catnip Mike pattern typed up ready to format. :D

You finished the first scarf? Or did you throw it onto the fire? :)

Hairy yarns can be annoying to work with, but at least your mistakes won't be too obvious.

I've put the first scarf on hold - I've got a couple of pairs of knitting needles, so I'm using a different pair.
Oh, that's good. :D This scarf's going to be a Christmas present for my sister. :)

Thankfully I found the stitch I'd dropped, and, using my trusty bracelet-making wire, managed to get it all together again. :)

It's the tightness at which you knit. My tension is naturally a little loose, meaning that I have to use a size or so smaller than the recommended needle size to get the same result from a given pattern.
me too!

Yeah, pretty much. Like, I have my sewing kit at my Mum's and my jewellery making kits at my Dad's. It just saves me from lugging great big boxes and tiny, fiddly, easy-to-lose things to and fro.

I know he can't! :D He had to send my curtains to my aunt for her to stitch up.
He actually did once knit when he was about my age, but he said that his scarf went in and out where he kept dropping and adding stitches.

The main reason I don't mix up my activities is that I'm so disorganised that I'd probably leave something of vital importance to a particular activity at the other house.

Ah, well, once you're over forty, you can get away with carrying around a knitting bag, stuffed with your various craft paraphernalia and a bottle of gin hidden beneath your work in progress. Do you have a greying wig you could don? :D

I've read some in this thread before.
I think it's pretty cool that you people have talent to do what you do. I'm not crafty at all but, I'll admit, I like to paint, do watercolors, flower arranging, nature pictures, photos & holiday wreaths/decorating.

I tried plastic canvas work & latch-hooking before but, I'm not patient AT all, who knew?! lol

Good work & luck w/ your crafts. I hope you make some $$ (well, pounds actually) from them!

Purled...for her pleasure.

Early 20th century condoms were re-useable. Back in the 80's, I saw an interview with some WWI veterans talking about it as part of a safer sex campaign. (The point of the interview being how wonderful modern condoms were in comparison to the thick latex monstrosities these men had had to use when they were young and randy.)

So, now you know. :)

yes it is! The pattern is here http://www.entropyhouse.com/penwiper/who/extermaknit.html I was just ranting, because the woman who designed them elded up getting into trouble (even though she made no profit at all) because of the money grabbing BBC (who I suspect are going to get the pattern off her and sell) I made it on 3mm needles, and it's about 26cm tall. it was very quick to make!

Anyone else here on Ravelry, the knit and crochet site? It's my latest internet addiction.

What is Ravelry? (http://www.ravelry.com/tour/peek) You get your own "notebook" page to upload your projects and catalogue your yarn stash (is my anorak showing?) and there are lots of special interest groups within the site, including one for Morrissey Fans (http://www.ravelry.com/groups/november-spawned-a-knitting-monster). Best of all, you can gets loads of free patterns. :)

Once you're in, you can poke around other members' notebooks, search the patterns database, join groups and befriend other knitters, by interest or by location. Through Ravelry, I've already made a new rl knitting friend who lives just four miles away. :guitar:

Like the sound of that?

The bag is not in the round, it's knit flat. (Or wait- I can't even remember how I did it. Maybe it is in the round. ) Really, you've never knit in the round? My join is never very smooth, but I always manage to fix it when I weave in the ends. So you've never done socks? I've only done two pair, but I love them.

I tried knitting a camera strap from stout cotton yarn, but I gave up. Soooo long and boring to knit.

I'm doing another pair of these slippers: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/felt-ballerina-slippers-ac-14

I've done them five or six times already, they make great gifts. I like to give them to the recipient unfelted, with instructions, because it's so fun to felt them yourself and that way they can get a perfect fit.

And I have a baby sweater on the needles for that nephew I mentioned. He's going to be grown by the time I finish, fortunately it's a Debbie Bliss pattern and so it's guaranteed to be freakishly oversized. There is lots of humorous speculation about the size of English babies, based on her sizing. ;)

It's on circular needles, so I assumed it would be in the round, although that's not always the case, I know.

This felting lark; it seems to be rampant on Ravelry but I only came across it maybe a year ago. Presumably, it involves wool rather than cottons and synthetics.... I suffer from excema, so I'm itching just thinking about it.:(

Maybe Debbie takes the "Ooh, he'll grow into it!" approach to sizing. :)

Another 20" to go on this strap....*groans*

Knitting in the round is easy when you've got the hang of it! Some find double pointed needles easier than a circular needle, but I prefer a circular needle. Just make sure you get the right length, I've made that mistake before!
I desperately want to knit a Bag Puss, but the pattern is going for over a tenner on ebay and I just can't bring myself to part with that sort of cash :(

Tell people he's the Earl's Court '08 model and the scarf is for his poorly throat. ;)

It's the fate of the plain stocking stitch scarf to curl up; pressing should help a bit but won't actually cure the problem. That's why most scarf kits use fancy eyelash or bobble yarns which behave a little differently when made up. Moss stitch or basket stitch are better choices for scarfing plain yarns. There are some absolute barfains in scarf-friend ly wool in poundstretcher at the moment btw; 150g bobbly/eyelash for £1 or a scarf kit in lovely colours for £2. :)

Moss stitch is K1, P1. Another way to stop it a bit is by knitting a garter stitch (K every row) border. Start with 5 or so rows of K every row, then as you move into the body of the scarf, K the first and last 5 or so stitches on every row, then K or P the center portion of the row as appropriate.

Or, you can knit the whole thing as a K1, P1 rib. It will be thick and cushy and have lots of side-to-side stretch, so you would want to add stitches to achieve the same width you intended.

But the scarf you made looks very cute and the curl works. Great colors!

No, I am not taking up knitting. :p BUT, I was wondering if anyone could recommend any good shops in London, or websites, which sell pre-made things you use in your knitting? If you want something more substantial and have a particular colour in mind, buy a ball of yarn ( I think the budget brand Stylecraft do a range of neon colours) and make your own. It's very easy; I think I learned it in Brownies. :)

This is a sewing job rather than a knitting job, unless you're contemplating unravelling the existing neckband, dismantling the sweater into parts and then re-knitting the top section of the front.

Yes, knitting will unravel if you start cutting into it, but alterations are possible with care; I suspect a garment knitted with thin yarn on small needles is a better alteration prospect than a chunky knit. This post deals with altering an existing sweater and you might find some tips here:

I think it was second time lucky with my picot edge - it's supposed to have little triangles going out from the holes, isn't it? The first one just has a thick chain of wool going across the top of the hole. :p At least I can disguise the mismatchingness easily because one side will be facing me and no-one will see it. :p

I'm teaching myself how to knit with a kit my mom gave me for Christmas.
After much swearing and many temper tantrums, I can now cast on and do a basic knit stitch.

Question: What do you do with the tail of the yarn when you are done? My mom says you don't put a knot in it, but stitch it back through the last stitches. Won't it all unravel without a knot?

I just made an extraordinarily ugly pea green knitted book mark. *bows*

Assuming you've cut the yarn, just pull the last remaining stitch bigger and bigger until the cut end slips though. The work can't unravel now. Then thread the cut end on a needle and like your mum says, darn the end back into the fabric of your garment.

Worked like a charm, Kate, thanks!

The ugly bookmark has been completed, and isn't worth photographing, but here is my second project. I used a vintage pattern.

Please ignore the ugly striped yarn, it's the smallest I had on hand.

http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee20/jesuisjulie/dress1.jpg

I think I've got the stocking stitch down. The top is k1 p1 ribbing. I even bound off in ribbing! *pats back*

The back is a mess because the stripes don't match up and I need to practice sewing.

I'm just back from Michael's with new yarn, which (I hope) is much more sophisticated-looking. And some smaller needles.

This is highly addicting, once you get the hang of it.

Contestant Number One - Hirsute, yearning, moob-groping Moz.

I am a novice knitter - I am currently in the middle of making this "Big Bad Baby Blanket" for my son. It's taking me awhile, but I am only working on it in dribs and drabs because of my schedule. I'm using the same yarn as this person's finished product (the yarn the original pattern calls for). It was pricey but it's GORGEOUS!

Thanks, Scarlet. The hair is nylon doll hair, rooted in by needle. It's wavy, so provided you cut it to shape once rooted, it falls into style by pushing it around with your fingers. :)

Well, it's always been in the back of my mind to get some pre-made doll bodies and to make them into various people to give as gifts. I have found that a doll of one's idol makes people go berserk with glee and I would love to be the one to please people in that way. I just can't knit. I can crochet, but that doesn't lend itself to dolls... Nor do I really have the patience to do it, I don't think.

Because I'm an artist I've always had a mental block when it comes to reproducing someone else's design and that's exactly what I'd be doing if I took the time to learn to knit just so I could make your dolls. It must be very satisfying to you to have designed these yourself.

Another problem is that anything sculptural doesn't come naturally to me. (I'm primarily an illustrator.) I think I'd need to sit down with someone and have them teach me. Or maybe look at a video tutorial at the very least. You should make one! :D

So, yeah, I'm thinking it might be fun to make a doll, but the hair has always baffled me.

My hair technique has evolved around the nature of the knitted scalp, which forms a convenient mesh for hair insertion by needle and might not suit other materials. I had these tutorial pictures on my Photobucket so here's how I insert a hair clump:

Thank you miss!! And what a cute little Barbie purse! I love it! I wonder if I'll finish my blanket any time soon, hehe. It's not that it's a hard pattern (it's all just seed stitch, knits and purls) but it's time consuming and I don't have the luxury of much free time lately. My husband thought I was on crack for spending as much as I did on the yarm (nearly $100 ) but it was so pretty/soft/gorgeous that I couldn't resist. I know that once I finish it, my son will puke on it and that will be that. But until then, it remains pristine :D

Dinky little bag, but I know what you mean about sparkly yarn. I tried to get some more of the glossy purple yesterday but it was all gone. :(

I'm just finishing a little beige-coloured man. I didn't make him with anyone in mind; just as a prototype for hand/head shaping. He's smaller than the others as he's knitted in a slightly finer yarn. Who do we know who's beige and compact?

Well, it looks like the yarn you're using is perfect for little kids (not too light). It will make a very nice keepsake! I received several knitted blankies for my kids and I draped them over the rocking chair or kept them folded in a pretty pile on the bookshelf until they passed the random puke stage. Now they each have one to cuddle with each night.

Well, I couldn't knit you in the usual peek-a-boo bra and knickers because Photobucket don't like that sort of thing.

She's from the same pattern as the Mozzer dolls so that qualifies her to stand by the amp. :)

Kate, how does one knit a worm? I can't make out the stitches--is he knit as a tube, or side to side, then stitched closed?

Kate, how does one knit a worm? I can't make out the stitches--is he knit as a tube, or side to side, then stitched closed?

I just made up the pattern as I went along and didn't write it down, but I'll try to remember. The yarn was DK and I think I used imperial 12s.

Cast on 60, (if you want a "saddle" on your worm, then swap to the saddle colour about halfway along, for six stitches, then go back to the main colour. Or you can knit the worm plain and knit a little saddle for it afterwards). Work about 9 rows, cast off.

For the head, pick up about about 10 sts along the edge at one end, turn and work the stitches, increasing into most of them so you have about 18 stitches.

Work about 4 rows, then on the next row k2, k2 together. Next row, p1, p2 tog, next row k1, k2 tog.... you'll end up with five or 6 stitches and you just cut the yarn ( leaving enough to sew up right along the worm, thread the cut end onto a darning/tapestry needle and thread it through the remaining stitches.

Sew the head seam, then lightly stuff the head. Take a 12" pipe cleaner and bend over about 1cm at each end to stop the sharp ends poking through the fabric. Use a knitting needle to poke a channel in the stuffing and insert one end of the pipe cleaner.

Thread the cast-on end (at the tail of the worm) onto your needle and pass it through the stitches at the end of the worm, so that you can gather them into a blunt point. Sew up about an inch or two at the tail end and insert the other end of the pipe cleaner. Stretch the worm out a bit so it can accommodate all of the pipe cleaner. Sew up the main seam. Fasten off and darn in the yarn ends.

That's should work. Probably....

From BBC webpage
http://http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/8537773.stm (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/8537773.stm)
Somerset craft club knits jumpers for bald chickens

Former battery hens which have lost their feathers are being knitted jumpers by a Somerset craft club to keep them warm.
The knitwear will be donated to Little Hen Rescue in Norwich, a not-for-profit organisation which re-homes the hens.
Battery hens, which are not bred for meat, are normally sold for slaughter after one year, when they start producing fewer eggs.
The rescue centre buys them and then offers them as pets as an alternative.

Members of the knit and crochet club, which meets in the craft centre at Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre, Taunton, said they liked to help charities and organisations, and thought chicken clothes were a great idea.

Miranda McPherson, from the craft centre, said: "The hens usually come out of farms quite bald and can be underweight.
"They will soon fatten up and regain their feathers with the right care, but while they are waiting for their feathers to grown back they can benefit from our knitted jumpers."
Jo Eglen, who founded Little Hen Rescue last year, said she takes in up to 4,000 birds at a time and around 10% have lost their feathers because of their living conditions.

She said: "There will always be some baldies. There was one that just had eyebrows.
"As soon as they're out it takes up to six weeks, or sometimes just a week, to get their feathers back.
"We are constantly using the jumpers to keep them warm and some of the new owners take a spare with them."

It's very therapeutic is knitting. Except when it all goes wrong and you scream and tear it of the needles.

I unravelled the priest frock (it was too big) and re-did it as a priestly top and slacks. Take off the collar and you have Ninja!Moz! :lbf:

That sparkle yarn is really strange stuff; it keeps stretching so even though it's finer than dk, when knitted to the same pattern it ends up bigger rather than smaller. I might have another go on finer needles when I have time. The photo, as you know, doesn't do justice to the prettiness of the yarn.

No danger of burning. Wherever that little dog goes, her human is only fifty yards behind, so it was click-click-click and then a hasty retreat inside.

Quiffaa already suggested a charity calendar to Lori and myself; I'm fine with it so long as I don't have to do the organising. :D

Welcome to Motown, Mini Moz!

He also attended an art lecture with me today. But I kept him in my purse, much to his displeasure.

I'm still working on his hair, it won't be so gray when I'm done. He was very upset with me when I squeezed him into an old Ken shirt and jacket. Patience, mini Moz! I'm a very slow knitter.

Thanks again, Kate....oh the places we will go.

Those are Ken clothes? They look really smart if a little close-fitting (but hey, frinky!)
