Or download VLC (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/), a free software program that can play just about anything.

I have a mac and use xAct to convert the Flac to aiff files with a simple drag and drop... After that I bring it to iTunes where i convert it to 320 AAC files.

And for my next demonic question, can you play these things on an mp3 player?

Only after you convert them to MP3s. Luckily, you get to pick the MP3s' bitrate, so you can make it as high as you want (or variable).
See the FLAC FAQ (http://flac.sourceforge.net/faq.html), which is biased toward developers, but still has useful pointers to various players and tools for every platform.

I don't have Vista myself, but as jeane pointed out, Windows Media Player ought to work. If it doesn't work by default, then check out this guide (http://www.losslessaudioblog.com/wmpmce-lossless-guide/).

Don't worry; they change on a regular basis.
Your spelling is annoying.
EDIT: Oh, holy shit! You're that devisphalluss user who IMed me about a month ago with the enigmatic message "Mozalini." Thanks for helping me solve that mystery.

Okay, so thanks to these tips the playing and converting flac files both worked, but in one particular download of a concert, which I've tried twice, only one out of 15 songs will play and the others won't, for some reason. Other people tell me they're not having a problem. Any ideas?

If you're already using Winamp you can just get the plug-in from Winamp's page. Takes 2 seconds and works perfectly.
Just type FLAC in the plug-in search space and it'll lead you to the page where you can download it.

That works for most of the files, except these that I'm having trouble with. Nothing appears to be wrong with the files, wtf?????

after you download the files, you post them here.. someone then converts them to mp3 and then a big fight breaks out while you go listen to songs on your ipod.
its a joke.. you can't post them here. only links.

I don't understand why crappy sounding bootlegs, or any bootlegs for that matter, are encoded in flac. It's not going to improve the quality.

For those running Windows XP or Vista, there is the K-Lite Codec pack which features a ton of codecs and formats, including FLAC and a audio/video great player known as Media Player Classic.

I've been partially involved in The Beatles bootleg community and most of the stuff distributed nowadays is on FLAC. However, many of the original sources come from vinyl records and acetates and through FLAC we can reproduce the high-fidelity audio and whatever else could be historically usefull, and unlike MP3s, are not restricted to 44khz and 320kbps stereo.
But I do agree that there is alot of stuff which sounds pretty bad that shouldn't warrant anything higher than a 128kbps mp3. The quality will remain crappy;)

nope. windows media player is fine.
I've never been able to play flacs using Windows Media Player.
I use Winamp, which can both play and convert them to wavs. I then use another program to convert to 320kbps mp3s.
I don't have room for a bunch of flacs on my computer, and I can't even hear the difference between a flac and an mp3 at 320 anyway.

FLAC doesn't claim to improve quality. But mp3 will, without a doubt, lessen quality.

Most of the information that is discarded when compressing a track to a high bitrate mp3 is beyond the range of human hearing anyway.
I only compress at 320, but even at 192 I usually can't tell the difference. (Below that, we have a problem.)

If you install a codec pack like cole2k which is the one I am currently using, all files including flac will play systemwide with any player installed on your pc including windows media player
heres a download link to the standard pack
http://www.cole2k.net/?display=Codec-Pack-Standard
I am currently using it with vista by the way and it works fine

I don't have Vista. Won't go anywhere near it. :)
I've had a lot of problems with Windows Media Player and its codecs in the past.
Besides, I don't have room for a bunch of flacs and can't hear the difference anyway.

What can I use to convert flac files to mp3? I have tried to burn the files on a cd to reload in Itunes to convert but none of my burning software plays flac. The only way I can listen to the files in through my VLC player. Any suggestions on an easy way to convert the files?
