What happened to him?
Mine was hit by a car. I have to say, I'm "glad" it wasn't a long painful disease, or poisoned by some neighboor, or something like that that would make it impossible to live on. It wasn't the driver's fault. So that's better I think. Still, I had no time to say goodbye, so I've been trying to do it afterwards...

This is Lucy... My latest rescue dog.... She is from a puppy mill and was sold at a local pet store. Her owners gave her to me after months of her being ill. The pet store never informed them of her problem and refused to treat her or offer any refund.... I have had her for 3 months and she is doing so much better. :D

My puppy is normally very healthy and happy and except for a few accidents well trained. Today she's had what can only be described as explosive diarrhea. Yesterday she had three cans of Purina dog food because we were out of her normal brand of dry dog food. Do I need to take her to a vet or am I just making a fuss over normal tummy troubles? Besides the horrible, horrible pooing she's fine, still playful and she's not puking. There's no blood in her poo.

The world's oldest dog has passed away. Chanel, variously described as a wire-haired dachshund or dachshund mix, was 21 – or 147 in dog years. She died of natural causes last Friday, at her owners' home in Port Jefferson Station, a suburb of New York.

Denice and Karl Shaughnessy yesterday described Chanel as one of "God's angels" as they spoke of her penchant for wearing tinted goggles and jumpers – to combat cataracts and her aversion to the cold.

Chanel was nominated by Karl for the title of world's oldest dog after her keen-eyed owner noticed the Guinness World Records book had no record.

Officials presented the dachshund with a certificate recognising her as oldest living canine at a Manhattan bash in May. Denice said today that Chanel had loved the party, and particularly enjoyed the cake – which Denice fondly recalled as having a peanut butter flavour and had been made especially for dogs.

"Dogs are God's angels sent here to look out for us," Denice asserted, rather eerily.

But Chanel didn't survive on peanut butter dog-cake alone. She reputedly kept herself in shape with a regime of daily exercise and ate home-cooked chicken with her dog food.

But like so many in old age, Chanel had retained some vices. Denice recalled how, as a younger bitch, Chanel would steal butter from the kitchen, and was also partial to chocolate.

"She once ate an entire bag of Reese's peanut butter cups and, you see, she lived to be 21, so go figure," said Denice.

As Chanel's all-too-brief reign as the world's oldest dog comes to an end then, the search is on for the next holder of the title. An early contender is a dog called Max, currently residing in Louisiana, who is allegedly 26 years old. World record officials are investigating.

Third of dogs 'overweight'
More than one in three dogs in Britain is overweight because owners feed their pets too many treats and do not give them enough exercise.

Cats are also getting bigger, with a quarter deemed to be overweight – five per cent more than three years ago – according to veterinary charity the People's Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA).

The figures, which came to light after the PDSA assessed 8,000 dogs last year, suggest more than three and a half million dogs in Britain are obese.


Sean Wensley, PDSA Senior Veterinary Surgeon, said: "Many owners get into the habit of feeding scraps and fatty treats to pets.

"We have seen a steady increase in the number of dogs, cats, rabbits and even small furry pets that are overweight."

The charity warned pet owners that excessive feeding can harm their animals' health.

Mr Wensley said: "Thousands of pets across the UK are having their quality of life, and lifespan, cut short as a direct result of obesity.

"Ultimately, it is the owners who are in control of their pets' food intake and often they inadvertently feed an inappropriate diet and excessive calories."

PDSA run an annual pet slimming competition called 'Pet Fit Club' which helps owners to slim down their pets.

The charity operates through a UK network of 43 pet hospitals and more than 350 private veterinary practices.

Expensive, but worth it. Also, that above site is fantastic as far as dog food analysis goes...be warned, though..some of their "High Protien," 5-star rated, foods actually contain too much protein for some dogs to process...these are meant for very active dogs that do need the extra protein.

Don't know about healthy dog food, but ethical food (or as ethical as you can get if you feed them other animals) can be found listed here:

no idea Billy - but certainly not Iams - they're bad!:mad:
you can get vegicat food that is fortified with nutrients sufficient for cats - my big girl eats it sometimes. But cats require compounds/chemicals that are only sourced in meat, so cruel and inexcusable though it certainly is, I still feed my two girls meat.
interestingly, my friend had an old cat that would only eat wheetabix and cat milk - she went blind due to malnutrition.
...Dogs on the other hand are perfectly capable of being veggie.:thumb:

Recently got a puppy, pitbull/somethingorother. She is dubbed Cody (or assbutt) and she is awesome. Got her at 6 weeks in early May, she's 11 or something now. She was very tiny due to being away from the tit too soon and harboring protozoa, but she's quickly catching up.

She is truly gorgeous DJ. It's a shame she lost her mum so young in life...:tears: 6 weeks is mighty young! :eek:

6 weeks is far too young, I agree. Luckily, she did very well in the catching up department.

So the lady across the street whose a major stoner (I got an awesome invitation this afternoon to join her for some amazing skunk weed and painting football jerseys, aliens and Michael Jackson's feet on glass ornaments. And she wants to see Johnny Depps new movie "The Terrorist.") has TOTALLY gotten into decorating her house this year. She even wrapped boxes with the waxy side of butcher paper to look like ice cubes. Anyway, she has all these stuffed dolls scattered about.

And whenever I walk my dog, something about the little teddy bear at the base of her mailbox really speaks to him, he grabs it everytime on the sly and I have to tell him to put it down. It;s just the right size to be a Barney toy I guess.

So I told this to the lady when I was turning down her smokeout invite and she said he could have the bear now. :sweet: I said that it would ruin her display, that he should wait til after Christmas, but she didn't care. THen she said he should take him on Christmas day. So sweet. :love:

So it started to rain here a few minutes ago and the neighbor was bringing in her stuffed animals right when Barney and I were going for a walk and she told him to take it. And he did. :D
