Now that we've broken up I can be honest...

One time I dropped my daughter off and her living room was all messy with crap all over the floor and the sofas...she said sorry about the mess...I said if you're sorry about it you might wanna do something...And you'll love this one...One night I went to drop my daughter off about 7:00PM..and I ring the door bell...NO ANSWER...I ring her cell Phone...No Answer..So I wait in the car...7:30 comes...I ring the bell again...nothing...same with the cell phone...I do the same thing 7:45 PM...RING THE BELL and hold it for about 30 seconds...She answers the door all groggy and says Oh, I must have fallen asleep...I told her...IF YOU'RE EXPECTING YOUR DAUGHTER TO BE DROPPED OFF, YOU DON'T FALL ASLEEP!!!!

i can attest to knowing full well the strength of unity many British people have still that live abroad
however, in my trip to 'the old country' i also saw 1sthand that this has degenerated with each generation since the 'WW2' one
to such the point that as far as i could see in Scotland
it was not even a matter of 'English' this, or 'Scotland that', but the loss of 'Britishness' amongst the younger people meant that sectionalism was once again on the rise
this taking the form of Protestant vs Catholic
which was not even played out in any kind of religious arena
but instead one related to 'football' colors
i say all this because actually my confusion was only allieviated once i REMEMBERED THE WORDS OF MORRISSEY;

often people whose parents did not speak English when they arrived lose much of their culture because their parents do not speak it around them
i know this is why i 'inherited' much more of my mother's background
and because SHE WAS AN ACTUAL IMMIGRANT TOO
as opposed to my father who had German father but he did not teach his children German and it came as quite a shock to everyone when he went senile and started screaming @ the tv auf Deutsch! :eek: but as a result i did learn alot of German and as a form of 'teenage rebellion' became a real Deutschophile(even becoming the head of my high school's German club and organizing a foriegn exchange with a school in Freiburg)
much to my mother's family, who was filled with ww2 war vets dismay
her father was a part of the troops that liberated Belsen also
tons of relatives died fighting the jerries, etc etc, tons of other war related stuff
but all this 'ethnicity' dissapears with one generation unless as an 'American'
you try and keep family ties alive
but most do not
and this all helps to make so many Americans cultureless really within a few generations...

My only real ex-girlfriend was a year older than me. That wasn't why it didn't work out, she was a freakin' looney tune and I was glad that she chose her religious cult over me.

i know this is why i 'inherited' much more of my mother's background

much to my mother's family, who was filled with ww2 war vets dismay

tons of relatives died fighting the jerries, etc etc, tons of other war related stuff
but all this 'ethnicity' dissapears with one generation unless as an 'American'
you try and keep family ties alive
but most do not
and this all helps to make so many Americans cultureless really within a few generations...

Language is indeed very important. English is especially tricky since it's the dominating language. Here we've got a law that forces every school to teach each child's mothertongue - even if it's Japanese or Swahili. A friend of mine, who's mother is from Chile, now speaks Spanish, French, English and Swedish fluently. This is quite apparent in Gothenburg who has quite many immigrants. During the 18th-19th century many Dutch, Wallonian and Britts came here since their knowledge were needed in the industry.

I dunno if it's right but I feel it's easier to preserve different cultures here in Europe then in the US, there's much more local nationalism (Balcan, Scotland, Scania etc) and tradition. But what do I know, never even been outside Europe.

One thing I envy many countries is the "club"-tradition at schools that don't exist here at all. The only counterpart we've got is the four (LOL) school democracy council each high school must have.

I've got a sence many Americans still like to keep track of their family line, in Sweden the church and state has registered every citizen since the 30 years war so it's a little tourist industry when American tries to find relatives.
It was especially interesting to find out that my mother's surname has been in the family since the 30 year war, 1648.
