Oh sorry to hear that... I was VERY surprised with the low price on that. And there were only 3 bids!

When I see something that I really want on ebay, I never ask whether they ship it to where I live. I just bid and deal with it later

I got a VHS tape of 'Melody Maker Video', which has Morrissey doing 'You're The One For Me Fatty' on it, alongside The Sugarcubes, Carter USM and Lush. I haven't had a chance to watch it yet, so I can't say whether it is just a video clip or not.

You guys are very lucky to keep finding this stuff, and for cheap on some of it. No offense to you all, good finds, but, I suspect this is a case of many folks not realizing what they have? There are collectors here and elsewhere who know alot about this stuff. You guys are lucky, and did the right thing in snatching these up.

I just cant get over how simple it is for folks to do just a 5-10 minute search on the comp? and they'll see exactly what they have & how much it's worth? my guess would be, if they found out, this stuff wouldnt be as obtainable, and would definitely be MUCH more expensive then alot of you are getting it for?

Not trying to ruin anyone's day by what I've said, or to take the wind out of your sails. Just saying. I try finding alot of this stuff here, locally in Vegas, and when I make the occasional trip to L.A. Most of the time, I cant find any of it. If/when I do...it's obscenely overpriced, and not in as good of shape as this stuff is.

Amoeba Records in Hollywood, would have the prices on most of this stuff jacked to the moon. I've seen some of the Smiths/Moz, non Smiths stuff they have priced on their walls, it's ridiculous what they're charging for some of it. I'm not cheap by any means, and will buy stuff if the price is right. They probably laugh when folks bring stuff like this in, and then cheat them on the trade in value? I've had it happen to me.

They had a "Suedehead: Best Of Morrissey" record on the wall last time i was there, they wanted $55 bucks for it, and it was scratched. Now, that may/may not be a good price to some? not sure. But, I can guarantee you 2 things about that record:

1) I wouldnt buy it for $30 if it was scratched, I dont care if it's "Rare" or not. If I'm paying that much for something, it wont be "scratched".

2) wanna bet they paid a fraction for this? The person who sold it to them didnt do their homework. I dont blame them though for giving them so little for it. Not to sound contradictory here, but, if you're too stupid to do a bit of research on the item? then you deserve to get low-balled on it.

you might be right. however, i have the impression that us-sellers inflate the prices for smiths items, both on ebay and in shops (well, at least in those shops i visited during my brief visits to the usa). i find smiths releases much cheaper in europe...might have something to do with the fact that they were an english/european band...

I think it has to do with the proximity to where they were most widely distributed, as well as demand. 4,000 miles (and a common language) separate the US and UK.

There were only 4 Smiths 12"s released in the US (HSIN?, Boy, Panic, Ask), and two 7"; What Diff and HSIN? The World Won't Listen was never released in the US, and Hatful Of Hollow wasn't released in the US until 1993; 9 years belated.

Now compare this to the plethora of domestically pressed releases from France, Germany, Holland, Australia and even Japan.

Also, in the States The Smiths could at best be considered a "one hit wonder" (HSIN?), even though it failed to chart in the US. One could argue that HSIN? is better known in it's various cover versions than the original.

So per capita, I'd argue that the US probably has the lowest ratio of any industrialized, 1st world nation.

So I think with this scarcity, coupled with their ever increasing popularity, means that any piece of Smiths vinyl almost always finds itself on the wall of the US record store it is in.

Wow. Very thoughtful and informative response, Beau.

On a less responsive note, your wanted list - the Beautiful South CD - are you looking for a standard copy? It's not very rare, there are 4 on ebay at the moment all quite cheap http://music.shop.ebay.co.uk/CDs-/307/i.html?LH_PrefLoc=2&_nkw=beautiful%20south%20sail%20this%20ship&_catref=1&_dmpt=UK_CDsDVDs_CDs_CDs_GL&_fln=1&_trksid=p3286.c0.m283 .. or are you looking for something else - the cardboard or the slimline perhaps? http://www.xmission.com/~dking/bsdiscog.htm - This site makes me think I need to start filling out my BS collection :)

Hi Black Eyed,

Good addition!
I just bought the same record a couple of weeks ago, still waiting for it to arrive from Oz.
Same reason as you really, I thought it would be great to own for very little money until I get the standard Aussie 7" (I already own the Aussie 12" though).

Very nice Dave, I want one now! :)

I was not aware of a UK version of the debut album with red text and a blue label though.
It is not mentioned on Passions and I have never seen one before therefore I couldn't possibly know.

Has anybody else got a copy of this record? is it ultra-rare?

Stephane, as always, your input would be greatly appreciated.

You've got me worried now...

To be honest, I've not fully unpacked it yet to study it in detail, but it looks legit, looks like it's 20-odd years old and is suitably 'worn'. It came from Hong Kong - but has Rough Trade logos on it - not checked the serial number, so I will take a look tonight.

Didn't mean to worry you Dave, not my intention at all.

You might have an ultra-rare release there, but I guess there is a slight possibility that this is not an official release.

I am trying to find out whether it is official or not because if it is I will be adding it to my 'wants' list! :)

This stuff is not listed on PJLM because there are so many variations of that type out there, particularly with early releases, that the discography pages would get too loaded with information that is only of interest to a minority of us and most visitors would need to dig into more text to find what they are looking for.

Eventually special sections aimed at collectors will be added, but this might not be for another year. There is other stuff I want to put up as well, and there's the general maintenance of the site that takes some of my time.

So to answer your question I am aware of three versions of the UK edition of the debut LP. One is the blue label edition just mentioned. It has a rubber stamp type logo on it. It is the scarcest of all three, but not impossible to find. The other two versions have that more common greyish beige label. The first pressing has the cursive Rough Trade logo, and the later reprint has the rubber stamp style logo. These latter two grey versions also differ in the words/music line in thecredits.

So does the UK blue label version always come in a sleeve with the band name in red text?
What other variations are out there? I am aware of the Portuguese release with pink text as I own a copy and the text on the Canadian and Japanese releases is slightly different to the std UK release.
Any other interesting variations that you could share with us?

Not pink text, nor grey - it's white.

Unfortunately, due to a drunken beer spilling accident when I was about 16, it's damaged on the bottom right hand corner - I woke in the morning to find loads of records stuck together - they tore when I tried to separate them :(

So now there is a Portuguese version with white text, a Portuguese version with pink text, a UK version with grey text and a UK version with red text, whatever next?

That would make sense, I am almost certain this isn't a UK release.
The inner sleeve is very similar to the ones found in Japanese releases.
My opinion is that this record was released in either Korea, China or the Philippines.

I'm not so sure, although $130 is a lot more than I would have said. If I remember correctly, it was produced by an Italian company (Unofficial Italian release?) back in the 90's before downloading and cd-r's were uncommon. It, like the other Smiths releases from the same company (Last of the English Roses etc), use to fetch £20 to £25 on Ebay and I have seen some fetch a lot more. I'm not sure if this is still a fair price?

Whatever, it is still one of the best Smiths live recording, I prefer it over Rank anyday.

I agree and this is why it is a great recording to own on CDr, I would not pay $130 for a bootleg.

I thought the obi for Boy W/Thorn didn't look familiar. So I went to look for mine. I can't find it. So I either never owned it, or it's lost among my other records. So which is easier? Doing a complete search, or just buying the one on eBay that has a Buy It Now for $35?

Maladjusted CD-R and Meat Is Murder cassette from a friend:) I also received the "wrong" version of Viva Hate on CD. I'm looking for the standard Viva Hate - UK CD [HMV CDCSD3787] (don't ask me why I don't already have this) and thought I had bought a copy but received the Parlophone edition. It appears as if all record fairs have shrunk in size over the last few years. The one I attended today has become noticeably smaller since I've been going there over the last two years and a lot of the dealers sell either brand new cds or bootleg DVDs.

I did find a couple of items:

Morrissey - Certain People I Know UK 7", in beautiful condition for only £3!!! I didn't even bother haggling :-)

The Smiths - How soon is Now WEA UK 7", I paid a little bit more than I should have, but it is in great condition and I've been after one for some time.

Hi Nat1997,

I agree, hunting around record fairs or second hand record shops is the best way to buy goodies. You can see exactly in what condition the item is really in plus the dealers are generally willing to haggle on their prices, and of course you don't have to chance the appalling British postal service. I've had so much rubbish from ebay of items that were described as mint that I very rarely use ebay anymore.

I so much agree with you , second hand shops are sooooo much better than E bay. I have never used E bay , will always go for second hand online shops (Vinylexchange is a very good example). You know what you get and will not be disappointed.

true. however, you can never (!) be sure about the condition of an item when buying it online (even when it comes from second hand shops). got some bargains through ebay, too. my goal is to have my 7" collection as complete as possible so i use all ressources: shops (preferred of course), fairs, the internet.

I think he's talking about Record Shitty(City)? I dont mind them, but they jack the prices up on sooooooooooooooooooo many items, it's not even funny. They've had some nice Smiths stuff there before, but way overpriced, and you can't negotiate with them alot of times. They remind me of Amoeba Records in L.A. in the sense that they know what it's worth, they know you're about to get screwed, and they say/do it with a straight face.

Once you leave, your item is now jacked to the moon price wise.

Picked up the 3 CD "HMV/Parlophone singles '88-'95" this afternoon.
Bog standard packaging. 6 page booklet with 2 pages per disc, tiny sleeve pics, singles track listings and basic writer/production credits. Disc designs uglyx3; grey with a pointless 45 r.p.m logo on each.
No unseen images, liner notes, etc. Complete abscence of wit or panache in the design.
Haven't listened to the contents yet but no chance of re-mastering.
It'll be interesting to have all the songs in a chronological context and I'm looking forward to one mammoth listening session tomorrow.
And yet I feel slightly soiled...

Certain People I Know CD Digipak
Something is Squeezing My Skull 7"
I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris 7"

But the best buy was a BBC Transcription Disc of The Cure for fairly cheap. Although I'm just now investigating how to determine whether it is the real deal or a bootleg. Even if it is a boot, it was a nice price.

All of you are right. It's an official Chinese release, and at the same time it's a bootleg because Chinese releases are not licensed from the Western labels. That's why you often get bonus material of that sort on them.

Thank you all for your replies. I´ve bought it on ebay a few weeks ago for 18€+postage. I think it´s a nice item, but I thought from the very first moment that it might be a bootleg. I didn´t check "Passions" which I should do the next time, because it´s a fantastic site. Congratulations Stephane and keep up the good work.

Is the one above Ringleader Quarry?

Disc one is Ringleader plus the extra tracks from Quarry, identical to disc one on the other CD pictured. On the back of the case it says that disc 2 contains Aerosmith songs. Now if Morrissey had covered "Janie's Got A Gun" I think we would have heard about it. My copy is still sealed but I'm guessing the tracklist on the back is a printing error and disc 2 is Suedehead - Best Of just like on the Chinese Ringleader CD, making the content identical but with different packaging.

I bought one of these from an Australian seller living in Taiwan, on eBay upon it's release for $7. I asked him if he had more, and he told me they were on sale in his local record store for just $5. I bought 30 of them through him, then another 40 a few weeks later. I subsequently gave a lot away - and I traded and sold quite a few too.

Strangways 180 re-release to see if it sounds different. Not really but I like the heavy vinyl. James, "Born Of Frustration" Japanese 3" cd single. I like this alot, really cool. and last but not least a hardly used Discwasher D-4 from the 70's before RCA bought them out and ran this product into the ground turning it into a piece of crap. This model has ridges of material that run lengthwise to the handle, with the fibers angled so that they dig into the grooves and pull out the dust, holding onto it. Highly recommended.

awesome! i'm going to see if i can get my hands on one..the newer ones have never worked too well for me. i usually just use some solution and non-abrasive towels that are meant for cleaning film.

Hey guys, I've just bought this shirt on ebay

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-MORRISSEY-2009-TOUR-T-SHIRT-BLUE-MENS-M-40-CHEST_W0QQitemZ350234711035QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMen_ s_Clothes?hash=item518b9d93fb

There are loads of them being sold at £5.99! I've just bought one, but are they the real deal? I'm baffled as to why they are so cheap. There seems to be so many of this particular shirt on ebay compared with all the other 2009 tour ones.

That design has been up on the bravado UK merchandise site
(http://www.bandstores.co.uk/shop/654321/proddetail.php?prod=13673005&cat=822)since mid-way through the 'Refusal' tour. Forever listed as 'in stock soon'! £20 + shipping!
Good deal Mr Chips! Just not that great a shirt, IMHO.

Exactly, it's always out of stock and £19.99 on the Morrissey merch site! This is why I'm confused. So it's the real deal then on this ebay page ya reckon?

Also, does anyone know when they restock the Morrissey merch shirts on the official site? Is there a day that they do it? I'm willing to pay good money for some but just can't find any in stock anywhere, it seems silly!

Nothing special, just received the 3 CD HMV/PARLOPHONE disc set. The only thing i like is the retro style cover of the discs themselves. HMV shipped my Swords releases on the 20th already, excellent !!!!

Hi Spike,

Who did you order your Swords through, I pre-ordered mine through Amazon and haven't heard a thing, although to be fair to them , as it isn't out to Monday I am just being impatient :squiffy:

On a personal note, I didn't realise you lived in Swindon, we lived just up the road in Faringdon until a few years ago when we moved nearer to Oxford for my wife's job.

On a side note, I received my copy of Swords double CD and only one of the discs has a little inner sleeve, is it the same for everyone?

Ordered mine through HMV, must admit i was suprised they came early. I know Faringdon pretty well, although i've not been there for a while.

Hi - I think I can get hold of a few copies of this DVD - I had a fair number of them in 2006 (as you can see in the photo).. do many of you have this title?

Same on my copy, must be standard a bit odd though not to have it in both sides.

As for the Pasolini DVD, got one of those off ebay a while back looked like someone had run over the inside with a lorry. I'm not as fussy on unoffical releases so I'll made do with it I think.

Bought a Swords promo off ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MORRISSEY-SWORDS-UK-PROMO-2-X-CD_W0QQitemZ130340103099QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CDsD VDs_CDs_CDs_GL?hash=item1e58e023bb
pricey but I've just been paid and haven't added to the collection for about 6 months due to finance issues!
