View Full Version : Making Banning Public

With the slight outrage being caused by the banning of Viva Hate for whatever reason, do none of the mods think that makes the modding process for things like bannings should be made more transparant? Would it really be terrible if here in the Site Feedback folder that when someone is either given an Infraction or Banned (at the very least when they're banned) the mod who did it should post the news and say why?
I was not a fan of VH at all, but there was nothing that they posted that I have seen that was any worse than what has been posted by others who have not been banned.
As it stands nothing is stopping someone doing whatever VH did to get banned and getting banned themselves whereby if it was at least made public what they were banned for (other than a simple link to the bloody TOS) it could serve as a proper warning to others.
Plus this would actually make the modding of the forums easier as people would know exactly what would get them banned, rather than just being pointed towards the TOS.
Just a thought for you to mull over.

Give everyone the power to ban as long as they have two approving witnesses. Make it where you say "I ban thee I ban thee I ban thee" and then two people say "I supporteth thou argument" or something like that and the person is banned for ever.

Not that I imagine it will happen, but it would be helpful for the rest of us to understand how TOS violations are actually interpreted, if not in the interest of fairness then certainly for the sake of clarity. I know this isn't a collective, but even Babylon had Hammurabi's Code (http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/ancient/hamcode.html).
And banning is so sudden, can't they spend some time in a Virtual Pillory before they go?

That's what the Infraction things are for, I would imagine.
Considering we have a 'Suspicious users list' sticky, there's no reason in the world we should not have 'banned users list' sticky.

I've posted this is off topic but I'm reposting it here as I'm presuming it has a better chance of being seen by a mod here.
For what it's worth, I've been told by a reasonably well informed source that the reason Viva Hate was given for the permanent ban they recieved was "Take a timeout".
Now, if true, that's actually just fucking bullshit from the moderator/s who decided they wanted to ban him.

what name do you post with when you are not 'davidt'. come on, i'm sure you go by another name on the boards. why pick on viva for what many do? what about robby?
you know, you should probably ban a bunch of us in that case. you should be ashamed of yourself. you allow people to post julia's address, telling people to go assault her, but you ban viva for being in a argument with YOUR FRIENDS. What ever happened to free speech?
davidt, you are hypocrite and a silly man. I can see that your self-righteous stubbornness made Morrissey himself hate you and this site. You are the reason why he decided this place is solow!! it was you attitude and actions. you ban viva, but you allow threatening posts against julia, and you allow rumors, submitted by anonymous individuals, which may easily harm Morrissey's reputation. for what? a show? well now you have the show. you get the solow show - here, there and everywhere. all for you davidt, the true god of morrissey-solo. we bow down to you.

This place needs to be run like the forums of somethingawful.com the mods are feared and respected in equal measures...for one they dont take any shit (poo poo) and users can be banned for anything usually just being an idiot can get you banned.
the main thing that deters people from being abusive or whatever is CHARGING for a place in these forums and if you act like an idiot you are banned and you've wasted $10 or whatever it maybe.
Charge people to be on here and if you want proof of it working look at the forums of somethingawful.com it started off badly for lowtax with masses of trolls on the forums but as soon as he started charging for it.....it all went away.

Something Awful has to deal with trolls on a much bigger scale than this site so is a good example to look at, thanks.
Charging a small fee for access to posting the forum would filter out a lot noise, but because of the smaller scale of this site, it would probably filter out most of the users also.

honestly, i can't be arsed to have an entirely pointless discussion with you about the trivia of an internet forum. some people just take it - like their pop idols - a wee bit too seriously.
for the purpose of clarity, though, i'll simply point out that i didn't "[...] decide to make declarations of viva hate's innocence [...]" in any of my posts in this thread, or elsewhere. read them again - perhaps when your drug-addled brain is clearer - and you'll see that i was implying others' guilt - of the kind of T.O.S. breaches - for which 'viva hate' was banned and highlighting that they have not been banned.

i'm perfectly happy with "the policies [...] of the site"; it is their arbitrary implementation that people "don't like". suggesting that people simply go elsewhere if they don't agree with how you implement your policies is scarcely an answer to the question of why you show preferential treatment to some members.
i can appreciate that running this site isn't easy and i'm sure it takes a lot of effort, time and patience. for that, you deserve a lot of credit. personally, i'm not asking for you to do much more than you already do, though (i.e. explain why people have been banned, when that occurs and, hopefully, implement your own rules even-handedly).

I think there are some incorrect assumptions in your statement. Other people have in fact been banned for harassment. This is not an "arbitrary" procedure and not "preferential", the moderators and I look at reports from the forum, and other reports that users PM or email to us. We look for violations of the TOS and take appropriate action.
Otherwise thanks for recognizing the efforts that go into the site. It is impossible to make everyone happy.

WDDIM, you have to report when you find someone's comment which may be breaching TOS to the moderators.
Moderators cannot take action without reading the post whether it violates TOS or not.
If you click the red triangle on the bottom left of each post which is the link to the reported post.
Moderators normally do not take action against personal slagging matches.
You may find some comments are unacceptable, but as David already explained earlier you can use ignore options for some members you find their comments disagree with.

do you not have anything better to do with your life than trying to get people banned from an internet forum?

Kewpie, do posts have to be reported before the mods can do anything, or can a mod decide something is violating the TOS even if it hasn't been reported if they come across them while generally reading and posting on the forums?
It depends on the number of the posts.
Moderators make effort to read the posts as many as they can, but not all the moderators are online everyday.
When a moderator spotted a post which violated TOS he/she reports it to the moderators' forum and discuss which action should be taken.

do all posts reported end up in front of all the moderators? is there any chance a moderator can cover the tracks of his or her friend(s)?
I prefer a moderator other than Kewpie answering the questions.

'There are some bad people on the rise
There are some bad, bad people on the rise .
They're saving their own skins while ruining people's lives'
This is getting quite petty, like the Washington housewives stepping in as some morally righteous guards, fighting for their vision of morrissey to be seen as the only one. There is no real variation of thoughts on mozzer's body of work if 'troublemakers' get cast out. I'd even say , bannining is virtual murder.
'how can you consciously contemplate , where there's no debate , no debate, no debate'
i have more on my lip , but i will close it as that, half-finished and half in thought.

Yes, we all see them. And we NEVER cover anyone's tracks. Why would we? What's the point of that? As I've said often before, doing the right thing is extremely important to me. All reported posts are considered equally and equitably. We discuss what's to be done (if anything), and come to a consensus. It's rare that actions are taken unilaterally. No one is above reproach, and no one gets favourable treatment. Really.

so did you all decide i should get an infraction for reporting Mr. Improper's abusive post towards Gin n Tonic? Or did Davidt alone decide to pay me back?
Unfortunately abusive language and harassing is now allowed on the site, and davidt made it finally clear what to report and what not to. If i would have known beforehand, I wouldn't have reported Improper's ABUSIVE (something that was once against TOS) post.
Uncleskinny, I like you. too bad you don't run this place.
Unfortunately i fear reporting posts or face being banned. Davidt is a wanker, and it's ok to say that on here!!!
the war is over, but i still got an infraction for reporting what i thought was against TOS. This is entrapment..all those times you guys encouraged reporting posts against the TOS.

i see so David T is more of like the Secretary General of the UN
and the moderators are kind of like the Security Council
which makes us posters kind of like the member states
if so
i wanna be one with a cool flag :p
