View Full Version : All time favourite non-Morrissey song
Dear Hero Imprisoned
January 15, 2007, 01:20 PM
I presume this question has already been asked on this forum many times, but I would really like to know what my fellow Morrissey fans like (besides the obvious one). If it's difficult for you to put only one, you can make a top 3.
I really can't tell what my ultimate number one is, but a song that really means a lot to me is Walking on air by OMD. I love the soothing music, the lyrics and Andy's voice that express so much frustration. "I'm not as dumb as you'd like me to be" - reminds me of numerous bitter situations in my life....

(I should've posted this in the Other music folder. *feels like an idiot* 'Please forgive me, I am so young and inexperienced'.)

lyrics:
The soldier came knocking upon the queen's door
He said, "I am not fighting for you any more"
The queen knew she'd seen his face someplace before
And slowly she let him inside.
He said, "I've watched your palace up here on the hill
And I've wondered who's the woman for whom we all kill
But I am leaving tomorrow and you can do what you will
Only first I am asking you why."
Down in the long narrow hall he was led
Into her rooms with her tapestries red
And she never once took the crown from her head
She asked him there to sit down.
He said, "I see you now, and you are so very young
But I've seen more battles lost than I have battles won
And I've got this intuition, says it's all for your fun
And now will you tell me why?"
The young queen, she fixed him with an arrogant eye
She said, "You won't understand, and you may as well not try"
But her face was a child's, and he thought she would cry
But she closed herself up like a fan.
Andshe said, "I've swallowed a secret burning thread
It cuts me inside, and often I've bled"
He laid his hand then on top of her head
And he bowed her down to the ground.
"Tell me how hungry are you? How weak you must feel
As you are living here alone, and you are never revealed
But I won't march again on your battlefield"
And he took her to the window to see.
And the sun, it was gold, though the sky, it was gray
And she wanted more than she ever could say
But she knew how it frightened her, and she turned away
And would not look at his face again.
And he said, "I want to live as an honest man
To get all I deserve and to give all I can
And to love a young woman who I don't understand
Your highness, your ways are very strange."
But the crown, it had fallen, and she thought she would break
And she stood there, ashamed of the way her heart ached
She took him to the doorstep and she as
She would only be a moment inside.
Out in the distance her order was heard
And the soldier was killed, still waiting for her word
And while the queen went on strangeling in the solitude she preferred
The battle continued on

THE SMALL FACES lyrics - "Tin Soldier"
I'm a little tin soldier
that wants to jump into your fire
you are a look in your eye
a dream passing by in the sky
I don't understand
all I need is treat me like a man
'cause I ain't no child
take me like I am
I got to know that I belong to you
do anything that you want to do
sing any so song that you want me to sing to you
I don't need no aggravation
I just got to make you
I just got to make you my occupation
I got to know that I belong to you
do anything that you want to do
sing any so song that you want me to sing to you
All I need is your whispered hello
smiles melting the snow
nothing heard
you eyes are deeper than time
say a love that won't rhyme without words
so now I've lost my way
I need help to show me things to say
give me your love before mine fades away
I got to know that I belong to you
do anything that you want to do
sing any so song that you want me to sing to you
oh no no
I just want some reaction
someone to give me satisfaction
all I want to do is stick with you ,'cause I love yo

Kinks :Waterloo Sunset
Dirty old river, must you keep rolling
Flowing into the night
People so busy, makes me feel dizzy
Taxi light shines so bright
But I dont need no friends
As long as I gaze on waterloo sunset
I am in paradise
Every day I look at the world from my window
But chilly, chilly is the evening time
Waterloo sunsets fine
Terry meets julie, waterloo station
Every friday night
But I am so lazy, dont want to wander
I stay at home at night
But I dont feel afraid
As long as I gaze on waterloo sunset
I am in paradise
Every day I look at the world from my window
But chilly, chilly is the evening time
Waterloo sunsets fine
Millions of people swarming like flies round waterloo underground
But terry and julie cross over the river
Where they feel safe and sound
And the dont need no friends
As long as they gaze on waterloo sunset
They are in paradise
Waterloo sunsets fine

Bruce Springsteen Born To Run
In the day we sweat it out in the streets of a runaway american dream
At night we ride through mansions of glory in suicide machines
Sprung from cages out on highway 9,
Chrome wheeled, fuel injected and steppin out over the line
Baby this town rips the bones from your back
Its a death trap, its a suicide rap
We gotta get out while were young
`cause tramps like us, baby we were born to run
Wendy let me in I wanna be your friend
I want to guard your dreams and visions
Just wrap your legs round these velvet rims
And strap your hands across my engines
Together we could break this trap
Well run till we drop, baby well never go back
Will you walk with me out on the wire
`cause baby Im just a scared and lonely rider
But I gotta find out how it feels
I want to know if love is wild, girl I want to know if love is real
Beyond the palace hemi-powered drones scream down the boulevard
The girls comb their hair in rearview mirrors
And the boys try to look so hard
The amusement park rises bold and stark
Kids are huddled on the beach in a mist
I wanna die with you wendy on the streets tonight
In an everlasting kiss
The highways jammed with broken heroes on a last chance power drive
Everybodys out on the run tonight but theres no place left to hide
Together wendy well live with the sadness
Ill love you with all the madness in my soul
Someday girl I dont know when were gonna get to that place
Where we really want to go and well walk in the sun
But till then tramps like us baby we were born to run
Oh my god, it's Robby!

Listening to or watching the Stop Making Sense version of "Once In A Lifetime" is nigh on a religious experience for me, so probably that. Has to be in the right setting, though.

Private Sue - The Bear Quartet
(Peter Nuottaniemi)
thinking and talking crayon
crushed in a mortar
tinder eyes
when will we move on?
when will we move on?
watching the dishes grow
if this is all I get
then nothing is what I owe
tinsel eyes
tender flies
who will lead you through
the autumn years?
who will lead you through
the wall of tears?
tinsel eyes
tender flies
who will lead you through
the autumn years?
who will lead you through
the wall of tears?
this one hurts
look in the mirror
if this is all I've got
then nothing is what I own
everyday cooking and cleaning
for people with no gratitude whatsoever
kinda gets to you in the long run

Don't have one all-time favourite. But several here have posted the lyrics to their favourite songs. Is it the lyrics that are most important to your choice? Do they have some special personal meaning, is it about reminding you of a time and place when....?
Looking at lyricists work (other than Morrissey) I'm considering the subject matter, use of rhyme, humour, genre, as well as the mood the music creates. I don't have to understand what is being said for the music to move me.
One of the reasons I like Morrissey's music is because the lyrics don't generally follow the pattern/rules of most pop songs.
I rate Nick Cave highly, so here's one of his to consider...
"Easy Money"
It's difficult. It's very tough.
I said to the man who'd been sleeping rough
To sit within a fragrant breeze
All among the nodding trees
That hang heavy with the stuff
He threw his arms around my neck
He brushed the tear from my cheek
And held my soft white hand
He was an understanding man
He did not even barely hardly speak
Easy money
Rain it down on the wife and the kids
Rain it down on the house where we live
Rain until you got nothing left to give
And rain that ever-loving stuff down on me
All the things for which my heart yearns
Gives joy in diminishing returns
He kissed me on the mouth
His hands they headed south
And my cheek it burned
Money, man, it is a bitch
The poor, they spoil it for the rich
With my face pressed in the clover
I wondered when this would be over
And at home we are all so guilty-sad
Easy money
Pour it down the open drain
Pour it all through my veins
Pour it down, yeah, let it rain
And pour that ever-loving stuff down on me
Now, I'm sitting pretty down on the bank
Life shuffles past at a low interest rate
In the money-coloured meadows
And all the interesting shadows
They leap up, then dissipate
Easy money
Easy money
Easy money
Rain it down on the wife and the kids
Rain it down on the house where we live
Rain it down until you got nothing left to give
And rain that ever-loving stuff down on me
:)

I meant BDSM, actually :D .
edit: Dear Lord, that looks bad out of context! :D I'm talking about "Strangelove".
It's what many DM songs are about, more or less... or is that just me... :D And they have a great way of mixing religious references with BDSM in their love songs. :) OK, well, not all of them are literally about BDSM (well, some certainly are, "Master and Servants" LOL), but even when they're not, there is a recurring theme of obsessive love bordering (at least) on masochism.
Speaking of which, "Only When I Lose Myself" is among my all-time favourite songs. I also really love "In Your Room", "The Love Thieves", "Behind The Wheel" and "Halo" (Goldfrapp mix).
some other favourites:
"Ever Fallen In Love" by Buzzcocks
"Strange Kind Of Love" and "All Night Long" by Peter Murphy
"Face To Face" by Siouxsie and The Banshees
"The Killing Moon" by Echo and the Bunnymen
"I Love You (Restrained In A Moment" by The Royal Family and the Poor
"Lovely Head" by Goldfrapp
"Decades" and "New Dawn Fades" by Joy Division
"Love Song" by The Cure
"Damage I've Done" by The Heads feat. Johnette Napolitano
"I'll Be Your Mirror" by Velvet Underground & Nico
"This Is Hardcore" by Pulp
and many others...

Worm has inspired me to choose a New Order song, but I'll take True Faith.
for temporary favorite song...
the lines
when I was a very small boy, very small boys talked to me
now that we've grown up together, they're afraid of what they see
are some of my favorite all time, so this would be in my top 10 at any random moment.

To me, it's easy to choose one favourite song, but when it comes to making lists - I just can't. I always feel it's unfair to certain songs, and that some songs don't deserve to be loved by me so much. So, this is not a top 10 list or something, it's just... several songs that mean a lot to me in no particular order.
Bryan Ferry - Boys and girls (or Your painted smile or Valentine or Bete noire or about a million other songs. I really love Bryan)
Pulp - Dishes (same goes with Jarvis)
Japan - Nightporter
Electronic - Tighten up
The Church - Under the Milky way
Azra - Marina
OMD - Call my name
Spandau Ballet - Always in the back of my mind
Hladno pivo - Pijan
...It saddens me a bit that almost all of these songs are over 10 years old. I mean, I do like some new bands, but I can't think of a song that moved me so much that is worth mentioning. Maybe when I get older I'll appreciate them more... I'm not worried about the future of music.

HALLELUJAH LYRICS
i heard there was a secret chord
that david played and it pleased the lord
but you don't really care for music, do you
well it goes like this the fourth, the fifth
the minor fall and the major lift
the baffled king composing hallelujah
hallelujah...
well your faith was strong but you needed proof
you saw her bathing on the roof
her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
she tied you to her kitchen chair
she broke your throne and she cut your hair
and from your lips she drew the hallelujah
hallelujah...
baby i've been here before
i've seen this room and i've walked this floor
i used to live alone before i knew you
i've seen your flag on the marble arch
but love is not a victory march
it's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah
hallelujah...
well there was a time when you let me know
what's really going on below
but now you never show that to me do you
but remember when i moved in you
and the holy dove was moving too
and every breath we drew was hallelujah
well, maybe there's a god above
but all i've ever learned from love
was how to shoot somebody who outdrew you
it's not a cry that you hear at night
it's not somebody who's seen the light
it's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah
hallelujah...
